Hi everyone,
I am trying to gather documentation that Elizabeth Clement b. 1751? m. 1766?
Bedford County, VA? to Benjamin Butterworth s/o Isaac Butterworth and Jane
Wheeler d. 1777? is the daughter of Captain Benjamin Clement and Susannah
Hill so I can apply for membership to the Jamestowne Society.
I am a rank amateur using data accumulated over a period of 30 years or more
by another family member and am not really very certain of just how to
proceed. Are any of you out there members of the Jamestowne Society or the
Meriwether Society? Can anyone advise me on how to do this/where to get the
data I would need in order to prove my descent?
Thanks,
Melissa Rider Shindlebower

I just wanted to let you all know of this place. I don't know if anyone of
you has ever talked to Barbara Clement, but I wrote to her through one of
these lists. She is a Smith/Clement researcher, and she has Clements listed
in a notebook that is in the place mentioned above. The name of the book is
about the Smiths. For anyone with family in this area, I suggest you check
out this place. It is a really interesting museum.

Hi again,
I have William Clement s/o William Clement and Ann Taylor being married to
Ann Walker, did he have two marriages? I only have 3 children for that
marriage to Ann so it would make sense if he had another family before or
after. I would vote for before Ann Walker as one of the children is listed
as being b. 1759 and I have the elder William being born in 1706. Of course,
also there is the ever present possibility that one or all of these dates are
wrong.
Thanks,
Lisa

I don't believe that Benjamin or Susannah are buried at Mountain View.
They were probably buried at Clement Hill although the markers have
apparently been destroyed.

Hi everyone,
I just discovered this list. I recently learned that I descend from Capt.
Benjamin Clement. My relation is as follows:
Benjamin Clement m. Susannah Hill
Elizabeth Clement b. abt. 1751 m. Benjamin Butterworth abt. 1766 Bedford
County, VA
Isaac Butterworth b. abt. 1768 m. Elizabeth Walker April 1792
Stephen Butterworth b. abt. 1794-1804 VA d. 1862 Bedford County, VA m. Lockey
Ann Wilson May 24, 1834
Mary Elizabeth Butterworth b. abt. 1835/6 Bedford County, VA m. Edward Wills
1850
John Harvey Wills b. abt. 1852/3 Bedford County, VA m. Mary Elizabeth Barker
1881 Kanawha County, WV
Lottie Mae Wills b. 1888 m. Ulrich Honzura Rider 1908 Kanawha County, WV
Virgil Floyd Rider b. 1912 m Helen Boka 1937 Kanawha County, WV
Dallas Rider my father
I don't have the siblings and specifics of any one beyond John Harvey Wills,
just the direct line of descent. Would like to fill in the rest.
Thanks,

Clement Cousins:
I visited the cemetery at Mountain View yesterday. Most graves are marked with field stones with no markings. A single large (I believe marble) stone in good condition marks the graves of Dr. George W. Clement and Sarah Turner Clement. the inscriptions are:
Dr. George W. Clement
Son of Capt. Adam Clement and Agnes Clement
Born March 17, 1786
Died November 15, 1867
additional inscriotion indicated his education at Hampden Sidney College and the University of Pennsylvania
and:
Sarah Turner Clement
wife of Dr. George W. Clement
Born September 13, 1804
Died March 15, 1889
Sainted mother educated at New London Academy
This is the first time I have seen an exact date of birth for Sarah as well as the first time I have seen any date of death.
There is another grave outside the wall with a modern funeral home grave marker.
Connie Beth Clement
1869 - 1952
Does anyone know who she was?
Apparently, Nat Clement of Chapel Hill, NC had a neighbor of Turkeycock clear the large trees and brush from the cemetery recently. The stone wall is in very poor condition.

Tom,
Actually, I was interested in the location of the senior Adam Clement's home, but also would be interested in knowing where "Oakdale" is located.

Otho:
Are you referring to Adam Clement who had wife Agnes Johnson?
I don't think the location of their residence is known. Maude Carter
Clement gave a highway name, though. There's an unproven rumor that they
resided at or near the site of "Oakdale", the home of their son, Adam
Clement, Jr.
