Hello,
Does anyone have any info on John James Clement, the father of George Abner
Clement? George was born in Bedford County,Virginia. I believe John lived
in Botetourt County,Virginia and was born around 1837.
Thanks ,
Dawn
I appreciate your comments on Clementown Mills. I am planning a trip
to Virginia in the fall and hope to travel through the locations where
the Clement family had lived just to get a feel for the area.

I came across the posting by Wes and Elaine Clement concerning Clementown while going through previous postings. I live about 40 miles from Clementown which is in Amelia County and is a local landmark. Route 681 North of Truxillo is now named Clemtown Road. Friend of mine who lived in Powhatan County about 50 years ago remember the old mill. I have not visited the precise site but have gone by the area many times.

I am searching, along with some cousins, for a possible connection between the Benjamin Clement family and our Eaton family.
Does anyone on the list have information on Susannah Clement, born about 1772. She was a granddaughter of Benjamin Clement and was mentioned in his will dated March 30, 1780. "Vis item to give to my grand daughter Susana Clement daughter of Benj.a Clement one of my best beds and furniture and five pounds in cash to be delivered to her by my Executors when she comes of proper age to receive it..."
We are looking for a record of marriage for Susannah and date of death. Haven't found anything yet on line or at the Family History Center.

Tom, Your email has prompted me to go ahead and tell you all more about the
trip to Clement Hill and all the research that was done. We left the
Tidewater area of Virginia early on Monday, March 27, and headed west on 58.
In South Boston, we traveled up to Gladys, VA on 501 north. Our first stop
was to be Oakdale, the former home of Adam and Agnes Johnson Clement. From
pictures I had seen from the list, I expected it to be on a regular road.
Instead there was a long road leading back to this big house. I wanted to
just take a picture, but the son of the owner of the house was outside and we
talked to him. He then called his mother and she came out and talked to us.
They WERE very friendly people. She showed us all around the house, and was
very helpful. It was raining that day so we did not get out to the cemetery.
As you are going out to road number 501, if you go straight across 501
you can get to 29 by taking road 699 about 1/2 a mile or a mile after you
cross 501. Once we got on 29, we took Business 29 into Hurt. The way we came
in to Hurt was opposite the directions I had been given to go to Clement
Hill. However, we found it very easily after we went under the railroad
bridge. We did not get out at Clement Hill, but I was very upset at the looks
of it also. There was still trash in the yard. We rode up to the house and
turned around in the driveway. I was leery about going up there since I had
found out it was rental property. As we were going back down the hill, I saw
four children walking up the hill. I guess this would be the same children
you saw, Tom. The hardest thing we had trouble finding was the historical
marker. I reread your note, Tom, that you had wrote with the directions and
other information and from that we figured the marker was in front of the
mall. We drove over in the parking lot, and I went over and took a picture.
Monday night, we stayed in Danville. My grandmother used to live there a
while back so she was pretty familiar with the roads. However, the library
had moved since she had been there. I went into the library Monday night and
I found a lot of information. The VA/NC Piedmont Society was closed so I was
not able to do any research in there unfortunately. However, I got a brochure
from the genealogy area and I might try to sign up.
Tuesday morning, we headed even further west on 58 out of Danville. My
ancestors moved onto the Patrick County area. We went to the R.J. Reynolds
homeplace in Critz, VA before actually getting to Stuart. In Stuart, we
stopped by the Patrick County Library and Historical Society. The museum on
the county was awesome, and it was very nicely laid out. They also had their
genealogical information in the Historical Society museum and I found my name
in a book a fellow researcher in Patrick County has put together. After we
left the library, we went to look for some graves where some Clement's were
buried. We also tried to stop in at the above mentioned researchers home. She
was not there so we continued on.
My g grandmother, who was a Clement before she married a Reynolds, used
to live in Ararat, Virginia. She passed away in 1998. Well, since we used to
go visit her on our way to the Tidewater area we would stay in Mount Airy,
NC, which is only about 30 minutes away. Mount Airy is in Surry County and I
found out that my gg grandmother Clement was born there so we were told to
check out the Surry County Community College genealogy section of the library
at Dobson, NC. They have a lot of information there, and I was able to find
out a few things.
Well, that's pretty much it. We visited with family in Winston-Salem on
Wednesday and then we headed back to Grafton, VA. We had a wonderful trip.
Well, I am going to end the book now. Hope I haven't lost anybody. I wish
there was more talk on the list. It seems to have slowed down lately. Tom, I
want to thank you so much for your precise directions. My mom, grandmother,
and I would have never made it around so well without them.
Beth
Tom -
Am I mistaken or not, isn't Benjamin Clement also
buried on the property. I thought he was buried at the
foot of the hill, but I do not know if it was the same
area.

Hey, All You Graverobbers!
Charles Clement, son of Adam Clement and Agnes Johnson, was buried "in the
garden" at Dr. William Lacy's home in Cole Co., MO. I suspect that Nancy
Hanby, Charles' wife, may have been buried somewhere nearby "Clement Hill"
or "at the foot" since she probably lived at "Clement Hill" until she died
(about 1860).
Clement burials at "Glenland" (Hunt home):
Charles J. Clement 1821-1842
Lucy Ann [Hunt] Clement 1819-1860
Nancy Katherine [Clement] Hurt 1840-1872 (their daughter)
Their other daughter, Lucy Charles Clement, is buried at another home called
"Mountain View" (home of my Jones ancestors), south of Chatham, with her
second husband, John Edward Jones. John E. Jones and Lucy Charles are my
2nd great grandparents.
Another cemetery "at the foot of Clement Hill":
In 1970 my grandfather and other relatives were subpoenaed to appear and
give cause why a certain cemetery shouldn't be moved by the town of Hurt (in
order to make way for Staunton Plaza) -- it was located at the junction of
Rte. 924 and US 29 (now Business US 29) and contained the graves of James M.
Clement (son of Charles and Nancy [Hanby] Clement) plus two infant children
of Vincent O. and Jane A. [Clement] Witcher, daughter of Charles and Nancy
[Hanby] Clement. Apparently nobody protested, and the three individuals in
the cemetery were moved up to Green Lawn Cemetery in Hurt.

The Stephen Clement is the son of Isaac Clement, son of Capt. Benjamin
Clement and Susannah Hill.
The L .W and P. C. Clement are Lafayette W. Clement and Phoebe C.
Williams. Lafayette W. Clement is son of Stephen Clement and Susannah
Palmer. Edward William Clement is their son. Susan LeGrand Clement is
their daughter.
I would be interested in knowing where Charles Clement and Nancy Hanby
are buried. He is supposed to have died in Missosuri at the home of his
nephew Dr. William Lacy.

Otho:
Dr. George Washington Clement is buried at his Franklin Co. home
sometimes callled "Mountain View", which is located a couple of miles
South of the Town of Penhook
Capt. Benjamin Clement is believed to be buried in a cemetary at the
foot of "Clement Hill" with some of the other members of his family, but
the rough field stone that originally marked his grave has been
destroyed.
Richard K.
I went to "clement Hill", about two weeks ago for the first time. It was
truely an
experience. I talked with the couple that are renting the house. They
thought that
Benjamin had been reburied at the cemetary that is in front of the museum
in Altavista. My Mother and I found the cemetary which is the Lynch family
cemetary. No clements were to be found. We finally got in touch with the
Mayor of Hurt , that is the town in which "Clement Hill", is now located. He
stated that Benjamin's daughter was reburied at Lynch Station when the
shopping center was built at the foot of "Clement Hill". He may be in there.
While in Altavista, which borders Hurt, I went to the library to do some
research.
I found a list of cemetaries for that area. There is a Clement Cemetary
in that area on hwy 900 near Pleasant Grove church. The list stated that
there are two fences around the cemetary. The inside fence is electric
and can't be climbed. He may be there. The following Clement's are listed
as being in this cemetary: Stephen Clement 7/18/1772-12/3/1856
Edward William Clement
2/11/1852-4/18/1856
(son of L.W. &P.C.)
Susannah clement !/4/1779-9/26/1850
Susan Lagrand Clement
9/11/1855-10/17/1860
(daughter of L. W. and P.C.)
There are several graves marked with fieldstones.
I was unable to visit the cemetary. I am planning a trip back that way this
summer and am planning to try to find it. I also have record of the Hunt
family
Cemetary that list the burial sites of Charles Clement and Nannie Clement
if you're interested.

Hello,
Let me introduce myself. My family branch is through Adam Clement , the son
of Captain BenjaminClement of Pittsylvania county, Virginia. I need a little
help in finding a missing link or two. I will have to start at the wrong end
of the
branch, forgive me. I am the daughter of Betty Frances Clement who is the
daughter of Clarence Jesse Clement and Virginia Campbell. Their marriage
produced 7 children : Jack Clement, Gene Clement, Ernest Clement
Betty Clement,Barbara clement,Virginia Clement, and Sarah clement.
All children were born in Roanoke,Virginia.
Clarence Clement (my Grandfather) was Born in Bedford County,Virginia
to George Abner Clement who married Susan Frances Pollard. George was born
in 1866 in Amherst County,Virginia.
George Abner Clement was the son of John James Clement and Margaret Fellows.
John James Clement was born in 1837 and died in 1920 in Virginia.
Margaret Clement was born in 1844 and died in 1877. My missing link
is the father of John James Clement. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of going to "Clement Hill". It was such
a great event for me. I will be happy to answer any questions that you may
have.
Take Care,
Dawn Taylor
Dear Otho,
Welcome to the group. We are glad to have you join us.
Your post mentions
>> . . . Dr. Wright was the son of Dryden Wright and Juriah Clement.
Juriah Wright was the daughter of Steven Fletcher Clement who in turn was
the son of George Washington Clement of Clement Hill and Sally (or Sarah)
Turner." >>
Although this is not my direct line (and my sources are secondary), it is my
understanding that Steven Fletcher CLEMENT (b. 1846 - d. 1915) did not marry
and had no issue. I was further under the impression that the Juriah
Octavia CLEMENT (b. 1843 VA) who married Dryden WRIGHT was herself a
daughter of George Washington CLEMENT (b. 1786 VA - d. 1867 VA) and Sarah
TURNER COOK. Steven Fletcher CLEMENT and Juriah Octavia CLEMENT were their
youngest two children.
Can you (or another list member) provide clarification on this issue?
Sincerely,
Marna

Hello. I am Otho clement Wright Fraher, a direct decendent of Benjamin Clement. My Mother was Lucy Jarratt Wright the daughter of Dr. Otho Clement Wright. Dr. Wright was the son of Dryden Wright and Juriah Clement. Juriah Wright was the daughter of Steven Fletcher Clement who in turn was the son of George Washington Clement of Clement Hill and Sally (or Sarah) Turner. I will fill in the dates etc. at a later time.
I got involved in this because I have a hunting horn in my possession which has a silver ring around the large end inscribed with the following names and dates.
Benjamin Turner - 1800
Sam'l S. Cook - 1842
S. F. Clement - 1866
O. C. Wright - 1915
Lucy Jarratt Wright - 1927
O. C. W. Fraher - 1953
We don't believe the dates have any particular meaning other than when the horn changed possession. The dates 1915, 1927, and 1953 are know to be when the horn changed hands. We do not know for certain about the other dates.
George Washington Clement was married twice, first to Stella Smith and then to Sarah or Sally Turner.
Benjamin Turner of Bedford County had a daughter Sarah or Sally who was born in 1804 and married Samuel Cook. They had a son, Samuel Shrewsbury Cook, and Samuel Cook then died in 1830. I believe that this Sally or Sarah is the same Sally or Sarah Turner who married George Wahington Clement in 1934 but I am not certain. This sceanario would explain the Sam'l S. Cook on the horn and S. F. Clement would have been his half brother. I don't know what happened to Samuel Shrewsbury Cook. If he died around 1866 or had no children this might explain the horn going to S. F. Clement.
Any information anyone might have concerning this would be appreciated.
Otho Fraher
p.s. I intend to give the horn to my nephew Edward Shelton Fraher, III later this year and would like to accompany it with a history, or at least an explanation of who each of the previous owners was.
