Wes & Elaine-
My research of William Clement includes the following:
1. I made a photocopy of the Patent of 1,225 ac. on southside of
Appomattox Ri, (Patent Book 17, page 114).
2. I plotted the meets and bounds from that patent. Only one corner of
it lay on a curve in the Appomattox, where a mill was built.
3. I found that same plat on a map of Amelia Co patents, which is
available from the Amelia Co. Library.
4. Extracted all the wills and deeds of the Clements, which referred to
several members of the Clement family owning lots in Clement Town, and
owning share interest in the mill.
5. However, I have not seen any writing about the "Clementown Mills". I
don't know if there is published History of Ameia Co.
6. The current Commonwealth of Virginia General Highway Map of Amelia
Co, shows this location is at or near the intersection of county roads
681 and 643, and where both Bent Creek and Little Bent Creek empty into
the Appomattox River. No town name or community name is shown on this
1979 map at that location. Apparently the town no longer exists.

I pinpointed on DeLorme's VA Atlas and Gazetteer 1991 the location of
William CLEMENT's land patent of 1736 of "1225 ac. in Amelia Co. on
south side of Appomattox River bounded by Thomas Franklin, Bent Run
(creek)...". That is just where I found a CLEMENTOWN MILLS listed on
the map.
Has anyone been there?
Does anyone know of anything written about CLEMENTOWN MILLS - possibly
from a history of Amelia Co.?

THANK YOU, RICHARD, for your prompt reply that Leonard HILL was the
first husband of Mary Micou, who secondly married Joshua FRY!
Now let me tell you how I stumbled onto research into Joshua FRY and
Judge John SPEED.
While in Louisville, KY area May 1999, my husband and I toured the
Farmington Plantation that was built in 1810 for John and Lucy Fry
Speed. My husband noticed a small glass dish in the display case of
the visitor's center. On the dish was this note, "Belonged to SPEED
family - a gift of Mrs. Ben CLEMENT". Of course, "Mrs. Ben CLEMENT"
peaked my interest as to whether this dish had been given to the
family by any of the Mrs. Ben Clements in our ancestry. I took a
photo through the glass display, but it came out blurry. I wrote to
Farmington's director in June to request a photo of the dish and other
information that might be available about the dish. I received no
response. In October, I called the director, Carolyn Brooks. She
told me that their acquistion records were in bad shape. She would
let me know if she learned anything more about the dish. I was hoping
to get an approximate age of the dish so as to zero in on who this
Mrs. Ben Clement may be. I also requested a photo. She said that she
would send me one but that it would not be for a while as they were
very busy at the visitor's center. As of this time, I have not heard
from Carolyn Brooks and I can understand that this time consuming
request would not be high on their activities list.
If anyone lives in the Louisville area, would they be willing to go to
the Farmington Plantation and try taking a better photo of this glass
dish?
I do hunch that this dish may have been given to the ancestors of
Judge John Speed or Lucy Fry Speed by our Susannah Hill Clement (Mrs.
Ben) - if the dish was made between about mid-1700's to before 1790
(when Susannah died).
Judge John SPEED's father was Captain James Speed, who was born in
Mecklenburg Co., VA in 1739 and brought his family to KY in 1782.
Captain Speed's father was John Speed of Mecklenburg Co., VA and born
1714. This was obtained from the book, "Judge John Speed and His
Family" by Rev. John H. Heywood; pub. by John P. Morton & Co.;
Louisville, 1894; p. 11. Actually, Mecklenburg was formed from
Lunenburg in 1765. In 1746, Lunenburg was formed from Brunswick which
had been formed from Prince George in 1732.
>From the book "Cumberland Parish - Lunenburg County, Virginia
1746-1816 - Vestry Book 1746 - 1816" by Landon C. Bell; pub. by The
William Byrd Press, Inc., Printers; Richmond, Virginia; p. 284: "John
SPEED settled in that part of Lunenburg County, Virginia, afterwards
to be cut off into Mecklenburg County. He was a Vestryman of
Cumberland Parish from 1755 to 1760, and was a Justice of the County
Court of Lunenburg from 1756 to 1765, when Mecklenburg County was
formed." "A part, at least, of the Speed family emigrated from the
original Lunenburg section to Kentucky ".
>From the Cumberland Parish notes of the same book, page 344:
"At a Vestry held for this parish the 7th day of Novem 1754"
Dr. [Debits]
To John SPEED as Clk Sexton and Clk of the Vestry 2200
To John SPEED for Support of Mary & Betty Hatsel and Agnes Dodd
1200
To Benjamin CLEMENTS for doctoring J and Mary Brown 5 10
0
I deduce that this John SPEED is the grandfather of Judge John Speed.
I believe that the Benjamin CLEMENTS refers to our Benjamin, born
about 1705 in VA and died 1780 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. He married
Susannah HILL about 1730.
Benjamin and Susannah's home was in Lunenburg Co. before that county
became Halifax Co. and finally Pittsylvania Co. In regards to
referring to "Benjamin Clements for doctoring" - our Benjamin Clement
was referred to as Doctor Clements in a Pittsylvania Co. Court Order
Bk 4 p. 193 on in Feb 1779 as "Joshua Abston's appointed surveyor of
the Road leading from Doctor Clements ..."
It appears that other family members of Susannah HILL CLEMENT (if this
William HILL is her brother and Clement READ is her brother-in-law)
were living in Cumberland Parish of Lunenburg Co. in 1747 and probably
knew the SPEED family.
In the book, "Lunenburg County Virginia - Deed Books 1 & 2 - 1746 -
1752" Transcribed by June Banks Evans; pub. by Bryn Efyliaid
Publications; New Orleans, Louisana,70124; p. 15: "227-231: 7 Sep
1747 - William HILL and Katherine his wife of Cumberland Parish,
Lunenburg Co. to Fran. Bressie of same parish and county, 45 pounds,
362 acres; Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg, west of Butcher's Creek, to
Josiah Baker's corner"
Wit: Walter Campbell, John SPEED, David Dodd
Rec.: 7 Sep 1747 Sig: William
HILL, Katharine HILL
Also on the same page in the above book was a listing for Clemt. READ
as a witness on a deed for James Coleman of Cumberland Parish dated 5
Oct 1747.
There could also be a connection between Mrs. Ben CLEMENT and the
great-grandparents of Lucy FRY SPEED. They were Joshua FRY and Mary
Micou HILL, widow of Col. HILL (Leonard Hill - thanks to Richard
Kesler!).
Please refer to Richard's and my earlier e-mails.
Maybe somehow this Mary Micou HILL FRY was related to
Susannah HILL CLEMENT.
Does anyone have any thoughts about any connection between Leonard
HILL and Isaac HILL?
Who is this Mrs. Ben Clement, who knew the Speed or Fry families? It
would be helpful if there was some record at the Farmington Plantation
that could tell us when this dish was given to Speed or Fry family to
help determine who this Mrs. Ben Clement was. Maybe we will never
know the answer to this mystery.

Here I am again with another discovery that was new to me and may
interest some of you - again it does not prove anything, but maybe it
will be helpful sometime in further research into the ancestry of
Susannah (HILL) CLEMENT.
I checked into the family tree of Clement READ, husband of Mary HILL
and supposedly the brother-in-law of our Susannah. There is a web
page at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8415/read.html
listing information about Clement READ and his descendants. It is
interesting to note that his daughter, Anne, named a daughter,
Margaret JENNINGS Jameson. Of course, we cannot believe all that we
read - such as "Col. Clement Read ... married Mary Hill 1730, daughter
of William Hill and Margareth Jennings." I had always seen that
researchers had Isaac Hill as the husband of Margaret Jennings.
Anyway, the important point is that Clement READ was "Trustee of
WILLIAM and MARY COLLEGE, 1729."
I also researched a Col. Joshua FRY (1700-1754) on the internet at
ancestry.com. The following was taken from the ancestry.com website:
"The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans:
Volume IV - F":
FRY, Joshua, ... "He removed to America between 1710 and 1720 and
settled in Virginia, where he was married to Mary (Micou) HILL, widow
of Colonel HILL, and daughter of Paul Micou, a Huguenot exile from
France." ... "In 1728-29, Joshua Fry was at Williamsburg as master of
the grammar school of WILLIAM and MARY COLLEGE, and was later
professor of mathematics in the college." ... "In 1749 ... finished
the map of Virginia known as Fry and Jefferson's map." ... "In 1754 he
was appointed colonel and commander-in-chief of the Virginia regiment,
and started for the Ohio in command of the expedition against the
French, George Washington being lieutenant-colonel. Colonel Fry died
on the way and Washington succeeded to the command. He was buried
under a large oak upon which Washington cut the inscription: 'Under
this oak lies the body of the good, the just and the noble Fry.' He
died near Fort Cumberland, Md., May 31, 1754."
Also at ancestry.com under Judge John SPEED, the husband of Col.
Joshua Fry's great-granddaughter, there is the excerpt from the book
"Colonial Families of the United States of America: Volume 7": "Col.
Joshua FRY was educated at Oxford, England, emigrated to Virginia
previous to 1710, during which year he was vestryman Essex Parish,
Virginia, Magistrate Essex County, Virginia, 1710-1720; here he m.
Mrs. Mary Micou HILL ...".
FRY must have known Clement READ as they were both involved with
WILLIAM and MARY COLLEGE in 1729. FRY married the widow of a Col.
HILL before 1737 as they had a son, Col. John Fry born in 1737. FRY
would have met the widow, Mrs. Mary Micou HILL, probably between
1725-1736. Possibly this Col. HILL was related to Clement READ's wife
Mary HILL. Maybe FRY knew the HILL family through contact with READ
at William and Mary College.
Could anyone shed any light as to who this Col. HILL could possibly
be? I come up with more questions than answers!

Here is my latest discovery that I had not seen in writing before so I
wanted to share with you: (unfortunately, it does not prove any
direct relationship between the Clements, Hills, and Corbins, but I
found it interesting).
On the webiste of http://genforum.genealogy.com/burwell - there is a
family tree posted July 21, 1998 by Tricia Petitt for the family of
Maj. Lewis BURWELL, the adjoining land owner of the Benjamin CLEMENTS
living in Glocester Co. VA on 16 Apr 1683. Burwell's granddaughter
Martha BASSETT b. 1694 d. 1738 King & Queen Co. married aft. 1715 Col.
Gawin CORBIN b. 1669 Middlesex Co. VA d. 1 Jan 1745 VA (son of Henry
and Alice (Eltonhead) Corbin).
Gawin is the brother of the Frances CORBIN, who married Edmund
JENNINGS, possibly the grandmother of Susannah HILL (as I understand
it from previous researchers). This shows that it is possible that
the Benjamin Clements living in Glocester in 1683 knew the Corbin and
Jennings family. Wish this could have solved the mystery of who were
the ancestors of our Benjamin Clement and Susannah Hill!
