I believe from my own research and from the research of others that Col.
Edmund Jenings died on 5 July 1727. His tombstone at Bruton Parish
Church is marked "JU-- 1727".
Jenings' health was greatly detiorated and he had mortgaged all of his
property to Col. Robert ("King") Carter and others at his death. No
will or administration of his estate has ever been found for him
possibly because there was no estate left to administer. His home
"Ripon Hall" in York Co. devolved to Col. Carter's son Landon Carter.

Hi, Gail!
The date came from two different sources: Colonial Families of the Southern
States and Virginia Heraldica, I believe (shuffling papers). I've been doing
a lot of research on Virginia this past week so I have papers everywhere! I
also found this date mentioned in other databases, along with the dates you
have. I would think there would be some date in either the Virginia Gazette
or the Journal of the Hosue of Burgesses. I can't believe his death would
have passed unnoticed by the colony. Cheers!!

Jennifer,
I have several dates for the death of Edmund Jennings, including your 2 Jun
1727. My sources are secondary. What is your source for that death date?

To Gail relating to Jennings family. I have much of the information you have on the Sir Edmund Jennings and Gov. Edmund Jennings, although you have some information I did not have such as the date of Gov. Edmund Jennings and Frances Corbin. Some differences exist between your info. and mine. I have Sir Edmund Jennings and Margaret Barkham being married ABT 1650. Also my research indicates that Gov. Edmund Jennings died in York Co, Va. in 1727. I have seen two different dates in 1727 for his day of death - Dec. 5 as you have it and July 5. Although Gov. Jennings did return to England in 1711 to obtain an estate left
to him by an older brother, he returned to Va in 1715 where he apparently remained until his death in 1727. I have no evidence of later journeys back to England.
Also regarding the mother of Frances Corbin, my resources indicate her mother's name was Frances Berney rather than Barney as you have it. I have the Berney family going back 5 generations starting with Frances Berney if you are interested. I cannot find my source for this but will keep trying to locate it. I am finding this genealogy thing hard to keep up with, but find it so rewarding.

> "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." -- Winston Churchill
Looking back on some old research done some 25 years ago, I came across
the following which as I recall was taken from census records.
I show Frank Abston (b. 1830/1) married a Mary Margaret Morris in 1852
in Cumberland Co., Ky. I notice that several people have her last name
as Norris. I would be interested in determining which is correct -
Morris or Norris. I show Mary Margaret Morris born to William and
Margaret Morris on November 23, 1832. My research on this is 25 years
old and I do not have documentation on this. I do remember getting most
of my information at that time from the Cumberland Co., Public Library
in Burkesville, KY. So I am assuming that was where I got this. I also
show Frank and Mary Margaret Abston as being members of Mt Pleasant
Baptist Church and buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
Children of Frank Abston: John (b. 1855), Jane (b. 1864), William M. (b.
1866), George W. (b. 1869), Granvil A. (b. 1874) and Robert (b. 1877).
John Abston, son of Frank Abston . b. 1855 in Ky. married Ann Elizabeth
? around 1873. They were residents of Clinton Co. Ky in 1880 census.
His occupation was farmer and he died in 1902. Children of John and Ann
Elizabeth Abston: James (b. 1874), Matilda (b. 1876), Mary (b. 1878),
and Baby (b. 1880).
James Abston, sone of John and Ann Elizabeth Abston was born in 1874 in
Ky. He married Mary "Polly Walker" in Clinton Co. Ky in 1900. Their
children were: George, Alex, Lou (?), and Minnie (b. 1902).
Minnie Abston was my maternal grandmother and married Johnie Ooten
around 1920. They had two children: Elizabeth who was born in 1922 in
Clinton Co., Ky. and Pauline who was born in 1924 in Morgan Co., Tenn.
Minnie is believed to have died in 1929 in a flu epidemic. One story is
that she may have remarried after Johnie's death in 1928 and had a son
by her second husband. One story has her dying in Livingston, Tenn.
Another story is she died and is buried in Nashville, Tenn. but I have
been unable to confirm either story. I have a great interest in
locating her place of burial. My mother who is now 76 years old has no
memory of either parent and was not allowed any contact with the Abston
family by her paternal grandparents who raised her.
To correct my earlier misstatement, I have located my resources on the
Hills of Duplin County, NC. The Thomas Hill I mentionned earlier was
the son of William Hill who was the son of Isaac & Margaret Hill and
brother of Susannah Hill Clement. I have some pretty detailed
information on both William Hill and his son Thomas Hill and descendents
of Thomas Hill in Duplin County, NC. The information I have was shared
with me by Margaret Scott of Duplin County who has gathered information
on the Hill family here. One source is from the Virginia Magazine of
History and Biography vol. 45. I also have information provided from
Southside Virginia Families by John Bennett Boddie (1955). Another
source on William and Thomas Hill comes from research done by F. L.
Morris, NC (April, 1941) for John Sprunt Hill. It is a little too
detailed for sending through this forum, but would be glad to share it
with anyone who would like it.
A brief summary of some of the information I have shows William Hill,
son of Isaac Hill and Margaret Jennings Hill moving from Brunswick Co.,
VA to Carteret Co., NC (He was living there in July, 1764) while his 2nd
wife PriscillaWilkinson staying behind in Va with the children. William
Hill residence in Cateret Co., NC also indicated through some land
dealings in 1768 and 1769. At some point He returned to Brunswick Co.
Va - possible prior to 1783 when he deeded land in Duplin Co., NC (632
acres) to his son Thomas. In 1789 the Cedar Point Plantation in Cateret
Co. NC was divided between his sons Isaac and Joseph. Information I
have also indicates he married a third time after the death of
Priscilla.
Thomas Hill, son of William Hill, purchased 112 acres of land in Duplin
Co on April 22, 1777. Thomas Hill had six children: Gen. William
Lanier Hill, Dr. Buckner L. Hill, Thomas Hill, Jr., John Smith Hill,
Elizabeth Chamberlayne Wright, and Catherine Hill. Thomas Hill is
believed to have died between 1833 and 1836.
For more detailed information on the Hills of Duplin Co., I will be glad
to share with anyone interested what I have.
Louis Hill
Rex,
Welcome to our group.
That is a fascinating conjecture. I hope that you will keep us all informed
about the possible Huguenot connection!

Rex,
Welcome!! I descend from William Clement's daughter, Anne (Clement) Pigg.
I just wanted to say that I found your great-uncle's info. quite
interesting. I have seen research that stated that the Piggs (Pique) might
have originally been French Huguenots who fled from France to England and
then emigrated to VA, also. Interesting, huh?!?

To Cindy Hubbard Headen- It may be coincidence, or maybe not, but I notice
that in the 1767 Tithables List for Pitsylvania County that there are
numerous Abstons, Clements and Piggs and also Petits. The Petits came over
on one of the French refugee ships to settle Manakin Town and Josue Petit was
one of the signers of a Petition to Va. Gov. Gen'l requesting aid, (along
with my progenitor Jean Aboasson) in Dec,. 1700. I didn,t find the Pigg name
on the passenger lists of the 3 ships that brought the refugees there (landed
at Jamestown) but then my Aboasson wasn't on there either. My Abston's
apparently went from Manakin Town to Halifax County and then Pittsylvania. It
wouldn't be surprising that some of the Hugenot or French ancestry people had
a tendency to comgregate in areas.- Rex
Jim!
Thank you! When WILL I learn to check even the geography myself. I guess
that I need to break down and get THE BOOK. Thank you!

What a treasure you are! I am sending you attachments on Isaac Hill and a cut version of Clement which I am not sending to the group at large.
Any comments, disagreements, supporting documents - anything will be MUCH appreciated.
My early "research" was of the magpie variety and for my own amusement. The first material I didn't even document. I was certain that I would remember the source. Hmmmm.... Sometimes these days, I don't even remember my own name.
I hope that you find something of interest. If you want my full Clements file, let me know.
Do you see any glaring errors in Jennings? Or false leads?

told me that there were three Susanna Hills in King and Queen Counties (cut
from King William Co.). Two were placed, but the third, the daughter of
Col. Isaac Hill, simply had to be the wife of Capt. Benja. Clement, and he
definitely so placed her. Benja's Bible Record show that their three eldest

Hello- My name is Rex Phillips and I live in Dallas, Tx. I am new to the
list. My connection is as follows; Rex Phillips; Earl Phillips: Mary W.
(Abston) Phillips: James Alfred Abston; Lippscomb Petit Abston; James Abston;
Francis Abston II;. and Joshua Abston. Joshua married Rachel Clements the
daughter of Capt. Benjamin Clements. The original Abston was Jean Aboasson
who immigrated in 1700 from England to the Hugenot settlement of Mannakin
Town on the James River near Richmond. Verbal hand me downs in the family
said that they were originally from Brest, France and were part of the
Hugenots who fled from France to England and then on to Va.
I think I remeber reading some correspondence on this Clements list that the
birthplace and origin of William Clements was unkown. A great uncle of mine
who did considerable research on the Abston family wrote in 1974 that"Also
the Abstons were related to the famed Clememceau family of France. This may
be anglicized to Clements". I do not know if he meant that the relationship
to the Clemenceau's was thru William Clement or in some other way, although
after that sentence in his writing , the rest of the paragraph was devoted to
information about William Clement such as the patenting of 1225 acres in
Amelia Co., and that he was a Justice of the Peace and Sheriff there and
other info regrding the proving of his will in 1760. Since my great uncle is
no longer living and I have nothing else to go on, it is really only
speculation that there may be some link there.
I look forward to participation in the "List". If any one comes across
information re the "Abstons" of Va. in their research, I would certainly
apprecite it. I am particularly interested in establishing the details of
Jean Aboasson's move (and name change) from 1700 in Mannakin Town to Halifax
County as well as Francis Abston's dob (abt. 1700).

Thank you for the information regarding Thomas Hill and his sons of
