Ms. Clemons: I would be pleased to join your group. William Clement is a
fifth great grandfather. I am descended from William through his daughter
Ann. Ann married the boy next door, John Ghent Pigg (his father's property
adjoined William's in Amelia County). John was a miller and is believed to
have built the first mill on the Appomattox River, which later became known
as the Clement Town Mill. John and Ann moved to Pittsylvania County, as did
her brother Benjamin. There John got into trouble with the local Committees
of Public Safety for continuing to use the British East India Tea just
before the Revolution.
My lineage from William is as follows:
William (1691-1760)and Ann Clement
John Ghent Pigg (1716-1785)and Ann Clement(1712-?)
Hezekiah Ford Pigg (1742-1785)and Elizabeth Nash(1736-1827)
John Pigg (1770-1816)and Polly King(1775-?)
Richard Dennis Gregory (1798-1885)and Elizabeth H. Pigg(1810-1878)
Thomas Adolphus Gregory (1847-1936)and Mary Katherine Griggs(1867-1951)
Thomas Hutcherson Gregory (1893-1977)and Sallie Richard Easley(1893-1946)
LeRoy Harrison Richards (1915-1997)and Mildred Easley Gregory(1923-1971)
William Gregory Richards (1947-)
Please subscribe me to your RootsWeb group. I had participated until
recently in one for the Easley family.

Subject: CLEMENT genealogy
Dear Mr. Richards,
I was nice to talk with you this afternoon. Like I mentioned, while
exploring the Family Tree Maker website for CLEMENT family members I came
upon your web page.
There is a group of researchers / descendants of William CLEMENT (d. 1760
Amelia Co, VA) who use a RootsWeb mail list as a tool to coordinate and
collaborate on common genealogy. The CLEMENT-Benjamin mail list is
specifically limited to genealogy and history as it pertains to the
ancestors and descendants of William CLEMENT (d. Feb 1760 Amelia County,
VA); Captain Benjamin CLEMENT (ca 1705 - 1780) and Susannah HILL of
Clement Hill, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; and allied families. This
is not a general surname list. Subscribers have a proven connection to
these lines or have reason to suspect they connect. This mail list does
not generate a lot of e-mail. Its main purpose is to be a resource and
forum for research and collaboration for all descendants of William CLEMENT
(d. 1760 Amelia Co, VA). Currently there are 62 descendants participating.
If you would like to participate in this mail list, please just let me know
and I'll be happy to add you. We'd love to have you join us. I am the
facilitator for the list - which just means that I get to do the 'paper
work.'
Sincerely,
Marna Clemons

Benjamin Clement stipulated in his will, "...one part to be divided
between James Gilbert ane Rachel Gilbert, children of Juriah Gilbert,
deceased".
Richard K.
There are other Juriah Clements in the family -- and they are female. That
does not mean ALL Juriah's were female, however.

In a post to the list dated 21 May 1999, Jody Davis expressed her interest
in the children of Benjamin Turner CLEMENT (1838 VA - 1913 AR) and Ellen
RIGNEY (1844 VA - 1905 VA).
I have in my possession photocopies of letters dated in 1949 and 1950 on
letterhead that reads
F. B. CLEMENT
Attorney and Counselor at Law
Nashville, Arkansas
These letters are addressed to:
Mrs. S. C. Powell
Chatham, VA
The letters begin: Dear Estelle
These letters contain details that indicate that indeed Benjamin Turner
CLEMENT did father children by Ellen RIGNEY.
This Benjamin Turner CLEMENT was the son of George Washington CLEMENT (1786
VA - 1867 VA) and Sarah 'Sally' TURNER (1804 VA - 1889 VA).
The F. B. CLEMENT is Fletcher Blaine CLEMENT (b. 1892 AR), son of Benjamin
Turner CLEMENT and Alice B. Williams (d. 1910 AR).
Estelle POWELL was born Estelle RIGNEY (b. 1906 VA), the daughter of Albert
Sidney RIGNEY (1867 VA - 1949 VA) who was the son of Ellen RIGNEY.
If you have additional information on the families of any of these people,
please do share it with the members of this group.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Marna
P.S. When replying to any post from this list, please remember to check
that your posts are addressed to CLEMENT-Benjamin-L(a)rootsweb.com If you

sender and not to the list. Please check this before sending so that all

I am wondering something maybe one of you knows the answer to. How do we know
that Juriah Clements was a female?
I keep wondering about the name of my ggg-grandfather, Hugh Riah Reynolds, the
first-born son of Hamilton Reynolds and Rachel Clements.
It appears that the name Hugh did get used in the Clements family, but I have
not yet found it among any Reynolds, so I am assuming that it came from Rachel's
side. Traditions regarding the name of the first son were pretty strong, and it
seems so odd to me that, if Rachel is the daughter of John Clements, she did not
use his name. I might guess that, because John was so common, and others in the
family had used it already, Rachel might have chosen to honor her grandfather or
an uncle -- but an aunt?
Could it be that Juriah was a male name and was pronounced with an "H" sound?
Was it used in any of the other branches of the family?
Michele
DEe:
I am informaed by others that your Hugh Clement was s/o Isaac Clement
and Anne Denham. Isaac Clement was s/o Benjamin Clement and Susannah
Hill. Benjamin Clement was s/o William and Anne Clement.

In your message dated 98-06-15 to Marilee Jolliff <Mmj(a)AOL.COM> (now
<mmj(a)village.com>), you stated as your last line "Benjamin was born to
Richard CLEMENT".
Do you have any basis or citation of a source to support this statement?
Many of us on the <CLEMENT-Benjamin-L(a)rootsweb.com> would like to know
and document with proof the parents of William CLEMENT (d 1760 Amelia
Co, VA), and the parents of Benjamin CLEMENT and wife Grizzell COLEMAN,
whom you also named as William's parents.
Any citation of sources will be appreciated.
B. DeRoy Beale <bdbea(a)erols.com>
I am so sorry for the typo, on the approx. date of Richard. Of course, I
have no proof, as I said, but have gathered info here and there, for my
further research. I was just sharing with the group what I have at this
point in my files. Perhaps I shouldn't have gone back past what all others
have. I apologize to the group.
Here is my only source, an old e-mail message of 1998 to me:

Hello, Marilee...
We're definitely connected. How great!!!
I have a great deal on the CLEMENTS. I received it from a person a number
of years ago and have not personally verified the information. Having this
as a starting point will certainly make verification easier. Don't know how
much of this you already have and would love to know if you have proven any
of it. This is a sketch of what I have:
Sarah Jane CLEMENT (b. 14 Jan. 1835 & d. 18 May 1917) is the oldest of 11
children of John Rudd CLEMENT (b. 1810) and Sarah Saloma HUGHES (b. 1817).
John Rudd is the 4th of 12 children of Isham CLEMENT Jr. (b. 1781 in
Va.) and Sally Clark RUDD (b. 1785 in Va.).
Isham Jr. is one of 14 children born to Isham CLEMENT Sr. (b. ~1735) and
Sarah SCOTT (b. 1741). Isham Jr. moved to Kentucky in 1817 with his wife, 3
boys and 4 girls.
Isham Sr. is one of five children born to William CLEMENT Jr. (b. ~1704
in Va.) and his first wife, Mary.
William Jr. is one of seven children born to William CLEMENT Sr. ( b.
~1680 probably in Gloucester Co.) and his wife, Ann.
William Sr. believed to be one of 10 children born to Benjamin CLEMENT(S)
and Grizzell COLEMAN.
Benjamin was born to Richard CLEMENT.
CLEMENT and CLEMENTS seemed to be used interchangeably on the records I saw,
with CLEMENTS being more common in the earlier records.

Hello everyone, Please forgive me for not saying hello and listing my
family. Last Tuesday we had to put my mother-in-law in an Assisted Living
Home. It has not been easy. My line:
William Clement
Ann Clement married John Pigg
Eady Pigg married William Owens
Sarah Owens married John Adkins
William Adkins married Sarah Alexander
Lewis W. Adkins married 1st Sarah Lipps, 2nd Mary Stout (my line)
Victoria Adkins married James H. Hampton
Fallie Effie Hampton married Hillery Woodsen Lewis
Ancil Gladys Lewis married Forrest Sluder
Me, Delores McDonaugh
The Adkins name was spelled Atkins. The oldest Atkins I found was from
Pittsylvania, Charlotte and Lunenburg Counties in VA. I am interested in all
branches of my family and will share with everyone.

I have a note that indicates that somebody said (probably on the
internet) that the children of Barsheba (Clement) Majors can be found in
the book "The Majors and Their Marriages". I haven't seen it.
Richard K.
Marna,
The info. that I have on Bathsheba (Barsheba) Clement comes from Meet Your
Ancestors: Some of the Descendants of Robert Hubbard (ca1600 - 1663) by
Noland (Hubbard) Bowling. It appears on pp. 561, 568, & 570. The info.
follows:
William Clement deeded to Hezekiah Ford 200 acres of land for 20 pounds on
Sept. 18, 1739. Witnesses: John Clement, Mary Clement, and Bathsheba
Clement...All these witnesses were 21 or more years old. (Deed Book I p207)
On the same day, Sept. 17, 1739, William Clement sold to William Clement,
Jr. 275 acres of land for 20 pounds. Witnesses were Hezekiah Ford, John
Clement, and Bathsheba Clement...(Deed Book I p209)
Then on June 14, 1743 William Clement sold to Samuel Majors 200 acres for 10
pounds....This signed by William Clement. (All are recorded in Deed Book I,
Amelia Co., VA) Samuel Majors married Bathsheba Clement, the daughter of
William Clement.
Bathsheba Clement was at least 21 years of age in 1739 when she signed as
the witness of deeds, so she was born around or prior to 1711, and married
around 1743 when her father sold Samuel Majors 200 acres of land from his
patent of land. In William Clement's will is found, quoting, "I lend to my
Daughter Barsheba Major During her Natural Life Two Negroes to wit: Peter &
Sarah and Five Pounds Current Money and at the decease of the Barsheba I
give the said Negroes & Money to be equally Divided amongst all her
children". This proves that Bathsheba Major was living in 1760 and that
Bathsheba and Samuel Major were the parents of several children.
That is all that I have on Bathsheba (Clement) Major.

What information do we have in our collective CLEMENT knowledge about
Barsheba CLEMENT (daughter of William CLEMENT d. 1760 Amelia Co, VA) who
married Samuel MAJOR?
Who were her children? What became of them?
When and where did she die?
Has anyone looked at the probate records for Samuel MAJOR (d. abt 1761
Amelia Co, VA)? If so, what do the reveal?
How about land records for Samuel MAJOR and Barsheba CLEMENT?
There are no descendants of this couple yet participating in the
CLEMENT-Benjamin mail list. Please take the time to check your research
notes to see what you have learned on Barsheba CLEMENT who married Samuel
MAJOR and share it with us.
Thank you.

There is no proof that Hezekiah had married previous to Elizabeth.
I put that out ONLY because I've seen reference to it.
Personally, since most of Hez Ford's children were young enough to
require guardians when he died in 1752, I tend to believe that
Elizabeth, who was "with child" (hezekiah, jr.) when "Senior" died, was
his only wife.

Gary,
My name is Cindy Headen. I descend from Ann Clement d/o William Clement
(ca.1680 - 1760 Amelia Co., VA). She married (ca.1742 Amelia Co., VA) John
Pigg (ca.1720 King William Co., VA - 1785) s/o Paul Pigg, Sr (ca.1698 New
Kent Co., VA - ca.11/1767 Pittsylvania Co., VA) and Elizabeth Pigg (d.
Amelia Co., VA). My line continues through Keziah (Pigg) Hubbard d/o John
and Ann (Clement) Pigg. It appears that your line might continue through
Keziah's brother, Hezekiah Ford Pigg. Here is the info. that I have on his
descendants:
Hezekiah Ford Pigg (174? Amelia Co., VA - 1785 Pittsylvania Co., VA)
listed as land owner and tither in Pittsylvania Co., VA (Pitts. Vo., VA
History by M.C. Clement, p. 286)
signed Oath of Allegiance in the district of Herebin Pain who canvassed and
dated the list Aug.26, 1777 (See p.288, Pitts. Co. Chatham, VA War Records)
Will (pp. 147, 148 D. & W. No. 11, Pitts. Co., VA (1780-1781) Reel 31, VA
State Archives)
wife's name was Elizabeth -?- (she remarried, Adin Gray, after Hezekiah's
death)
The children of Hezekiah Ford and Elizabeth Pigg:
Hezekiah Pigg m.(10/12/1785) Agnes Owen
John Pigg m.(10/28/1787) Lucretia Payne
Ann Pigg m.(5/1/1784) Jesse Duncan
*Clement Pigg m. Nancy Elliott
Clement Pigg m. Nancy Elliott in Pittsylvania Co., VA
children (11):
Paul; John; David; William; Clement,Jr.; Hezekiah (possibly Hezekiah Ford);
Rebecca; *Louisa; Nancy; Eva; Mary.
Maude Carter Clement who wrote The History of Pittsylvania County was the
granddaughter of Hezekiah Ford Pigg s/o Clement and Nancy Pigg. She listed
these names as her aunts and uncles (actually great-aunts and uncles) in
Meet Your Ancestors: Some descendants of Robert Hubbard (ca 1600 - 1663) by
Noland (Hubbard) Bowling.
That is all the info. that I have. I hope that it is the right Louisa and
of some benefit to you.
