Hello Clement Cousins - I received the Pittsylvania Packet, Summer 1999. No.
33 yesterday from the Pittsylvania Historical Society in Chatham, VA. It is
a quarterly publication for members. In it was an article by Herman Melton
on "The Census: Then and Now 1752-2000. In it he talks about Benjamin (Capt)
Clement. I will give the jist of it here - if anyone is interested I can
send the rest.
"After old Antrim Parish and Halifax County were formed from Cumberland
Parish andLunenburg County respectively in 1752, one of the very first acts
was to conduct a census. However in the 1750s, it was called in Antrim
Parish parlance a "Persesion" of "the bounds of every person" on lands along
the many waterways.....
"Some elven years earlier, Benjamin Clement had patented land at the
mouth of Sycamore Creek i what is now Pittsylvania county. Clement
established his plantation home "Clement Hill" and built a saw and grist mill
on Sycamore Creek while rearing a family of nine children. He soon became a
"Gentleman Justice" and prominent in Halifax County affairs. It comes as no
surprise that he was appointed to various surveying and "Persesion" tasks.
"One pertinent and interesting entry in the Vestry minutes involves Mr.
Clement and read as follows:
"Pursuant to an order of the Court of Halifax County bearing seventeenth
day of August, last past for this Vestry to appoint Pursesioners according to
law whereupon it is ordered that Benjamin Clement, John Calloway and Stephen
Clement (son of Benjamin) do prosesion the bounds of every Person's land from
the mounty of Sycamore Creek up Stanton River to the mouth of Widow's Creek
and within the same and that they begin on the first day of Jan'y and return
to the Vestry on or before the last day of March Ensuing a perticular account
of every person's land they Persesion and the persons present at the same and
what lands in their bounds they shall fail to persesion and the Perticular
reason of such failure." Source: Minutes of the Vestry of Antrim Parish
1742-1820.
The rest of his article talks about the name change from Widows Creek to
Old Woman's Creek and the comparison of taking a census then as compared to
the 21st census coming up.
Another little tidbit to add to our growing files. Diane Homola

Dear Terri,
I apologize for being so flippant with my comment "here we go again".
Yes there is some conflict about the ancestry of William Clement Sr (d
1850 Amelia Co, VA. Actually it is more speculation not backed up with
primary source data. Someone "puts" the data on the website or in the
Morman archives, without citing any primary source of the data, it is
proliforated around the world, and everybody takes it as gospel because
it is on a website. The website is not a primary source. What we need
is the Bible record, the will, the deed, the birth record, the death
record, the marriage record, the census record, the land record, the tax
record, the court order record, etc, or any combination of them, for any
one of them could be wrong.
What I know from my own extensive research of Land Patents and of Amelia
Co. court records is that William Clement Sr, from King William Co, VA,
on 5 Jun 1736, patented 1,225 acres of land in Amelia Co, VA, on the
southside of Appomattox River. (Patent Book 17-page 114). I have even
plotted the meets and bounds from this patent, and know the shape and
location of this land. From analysis of his deeds and his will (Will
Book 1, page 157), we know his wife's name was just "Ann", and we know
the names of his children.
>From the internet, I have seen speculations about their parents, but to
my knowledge noone has provided any primary source to back up the
speculation. Whenever someone, like you, reports the names of their
parents, I wonder if you have some source information I don't have?
Thus, my request for your sources. I really would like to know the
"true" date and place of birth and marriage, and the ancestry of William
Clement Sr and his wife Ann.
Maybe it doesn't matter to most people, but I personally don't believe
we should be putting stuff on the internet unless we have proof, or at
least a preponderance of evidence, to back it up. What do you think?

Here we go again . What is your source for reporting that William
Clement was born 1680 Gloucester VA, and married 1698 to possibly Ann
Taylor? There are thousands of us who would like to know the truth of
these details.

which I did find as one of his wives.
***Malvina Clement was born about 1793 in VA which means that the
first death year for Benjamin Clement, Sr. would be incorrect if
he is in fact her father unless her birth year isn't correct.

Some of this information has been gathered from family documents and family
bibles. Some of it has come from other sources such as family history
centers and www.familysearch.org (online). On the familysearch web site,
beginning with Benjamin Clement born 1735 in Pittsylvania, VA, the pedigree
charts can be traced back for centuries. It is extensive in some lines and
it's easy to lose your place. I don't think I've even seen all of it. I
would appreciate any information to help fill in the gaps of dates and
names, particularly who the wives of Benjamin Clement (1735) were. Also,
was Malvina's mother truly Sarah Bailey or a different wife of Benjamin. I
will also be looking into pertinent history for these lines. If anyone
would like to email, my address is tlserenity(a)hotmail.com. If I have info
that someone else needs, let me know and I will try to help.
Thank you,
Teresa Stewart
