Dear Marna,
Southern Lineages, Records of Thirteen Families , by A. Evans Wynn,
published 1940 by the author, has a great deal of information on William
Evans. These are the notes I made from her book.
"With all his brothers he served in the War of the Revolution" Southern
Lineages, p. 11 Moved with wife from Pittsylvania Co, Va in 1797 to Wilkes
Co., GA.
Moved to Wilkes Co. with 2 younger brothers: David and Elijah. Southern
Lineages, p. 11. She states that the Battle of Kettle Creek, 1779 was
fought on land he later owned.
'Worshipped at Phillips' Mill Baptist Church, Wilkes Co.' Southern
Lineages, p. 25)
"Buried at Liberty Church, Kettle Creek, Wilkes Co., GA (Southern Lineages
p. 11)
Under Wilkes County Land Grants (page 12) she lists:
William Evans, 50 a. Kettle Creek, July 7, 1784
William Evans land, 100 a. on Kettle Creek, bounded by William Evans' land,
John Pollard, Zacharich Glass, Dec. 20, 1784, recorded August 2, 1785. (Old
Land Grants, p. 146)
Additionally, the book contains the record of administration for his
estate. Bond is given by Stephen Evans, William Evans, Dan'l Fouche, Thos.
Hammock, Mayor Henderson.
"William Evans, deceased, Inventory, November 7, 1807. Geo. Boswick, Wm.
Pollard, Samuel Jones, Appraisors. Inventories and Appraisement (Book LL,
p. 221-248). Return of Sales December 20, 1806 and January 16, 1807.
Stephen, David, Susannah, John C. Elijah, and William Evans purchasers.
Wilkes County."
More interesting to us might be the following from pages 14 and 15:
"Susannah Evans, widow of William Evans (II), was married a second time on
December 29, 1807, to Daniel Slaton. On the same day that she married
Daniel Slaton, and before the ceremony, she executed a will naming her
children as her heirs, and her son, Arden Evans, Executor. In addition to
the will, she executed a formal marriage contract under the terms of which
all of her property remained her separate estate."
Susannah Evans will (original not recorded)
"To sons John C., Stephen, William and Arden Evans $1.00 each, they being
my several sons' part of my estate after my death.
"To daughter Ann Starke, for life - slave Jenny, upon her paying,
twelvemonths after my death two-thirds of her value to Susannah Slaton and
Sarah Slaton, to make the three daughters equal.
"Final division to heirs of Ann Starke.
"To daughters Susannah and Sarah Slaton, a slave, Rachel, one to pay the
other half her value-final division to their children. Beds, etc., to each
of the above named daughters."
John Evans, sole executor. December 29, 1807. Daniel Slaton, Samuel
Johns, Test. Caveat. "Daniel Slaton, Arden Evans, vs. Elisha and Samuel
Slaton for application of letters of administration.-Because they intend to
embezzle the estate, and have already done so, and because they are not
next of kin to Susannah and not entitled toletters of administration.
Probated December 29, 1807, both were present and Susannah acknowledge,
etc."
Susannah Slaton (formerly Susannah Evans) died before January 25, 1814.
On that date, Elisha and Samuel Slaton are appointed temporary
administrators with will annexed (will not on record). (p.60) Elisha
Slaton, et al., applicants for probate of will of Susannah Evans vs. Arden
Evans, canveator, admitted to probate and ordered recorded (1814). (p. 185,
vol. 1)
Minutes Inferior Court. (1817-1824, p. 2 Wilkes County.) Samuel Slaton
appointed administrator with will annexed (not of record).
"Estate of Susannah Evans, deceased 1818," and from estate of Philip J.
Starke (Anne Evans, daughter of Susannah and William Evans married Philip
J. Starke) "in both estates, my father and grandmother." (p. 291, vol. 1)
Susannah Evans, deceased, estate. Petition of Samuel Slaton, Administrator
(with will annexed), May 5, 1817, to divide the slaves. Elisha Slaton,
Samuel Slaton, William Roberson, Guardian of the orphans of PhilipJ. Stark,
distributies (p. 211, Return of Estates, 1811-1819,p. 165, vol 2.)
It would seem that there was some controvery here. If you can use any of
this, do so, or save until appropriate. Thanks, Jeannette
To add to Martha Acker's data, I am providing some as well, as we are both
interested in John Clements. I don't know if this has been reported previously,
but it comes from "Georgia's Revolutionary War Bounty Land Records, 1783-1785":
Washington Co., GA, 1784:
Samuel Clements, p. 36, May 17th
John Clements, p. 38, May 17th
William Clements, p. 42, May 17th
John Clements, p. 44, May 26th
(Sorry, I failed to write down the amount of the land grant...)
In any event, in reading about the method adopted by GA for qualified
individuals to obtain land, it appears that the first step was to go to the
county and stake out the parcel desired, then report to the nearest land office
to register the claim. The Act required those obtaining these lands to live on
them and farm them for at least 18 months before they would be given "title."
The dates above are the dates the original claim was registered. Therefore, we
can assume that the three Clements men noted above all showed up on the same day
to record the parcel they had staked out. To think that they are unrelated
would be difficult.

Most of us like puzzles. See what you make of this. It certainly paints
a good picture of what could be children of Capt. Benjamin: Martha
Clement the widow of James, John Clement, Stephen Clement and Susannah
Clement who mar William Evans. Note I did not follow William
Evansthrough the tax records, but he is there. There are assertions that
this William Evans was from Pittsylvania Co. VA, died Wilkes Co. GA
1806. His widow Susannah, dtr of Benj. Clement died by 1814 after having
mar. 2nd a Daniel Slaton.
The following Wilkes Co. tax records are from a two volume set on
Wilkes Co. GA Tax Records by Frank Parker Hudson, a wonderful piece of
work, but a bit difficult to use because the index lists every
spelling of the name separately rather than lumping them together
phonetically. Consequemtly I could have missed one. The remainder of the
items (in parentheses) are my trackings of John Clement and are from
other sources
