Hi everyone...
We are going to be moving to SW Washington in about 3 weeks. Until I get
connected and online there, my temporary e-mail address will be:

Hope to hear from all of you and be in touch again soon.

My son started the research on the Clement family about 12
years ago
and I decided to finish what I could . We had assumed that our first
ancestor
in America was Elizabeth Clements. Only in a few personal pedigrees do
I see
this listed. My question is How many of this group accept or believe
that we
are decended from Geoffrey and Elizabeth Clement? I realize some
people
are purist and will not accept anything that can't be proved, however
there seems
to be strong evidence it is true. There is some interesting stuff
about
Elizabeth that I would like to include in my notes on the Clement
family.
Thanks, William Clement wrclement(a)mexicomo.net

Still searching for parents of Mary Clement born about 1727/37. Married
to Edward Wade and resided in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Somewhere it had
been said that she was a daughter of Benjamin Clement but it is obvious
that she's not the d/o
the Benjamin of Clement Hill. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

The homesite callled "Clement Hill" has been discussed on the List.
There are two notable historic homes that were built by Dr. George
Washington Clement (s/o Adam Clement, s/o Benjamin Clement).
The first homesite called "Mountain View", is located near the Town of
Penhook in Eastern Franklin Co., and is where Dr. George Washington
Clement reared the children of his first wife Agnes Johnson. It was
built around 1813 on land that was sold (given?) to Dr. Clement by his
step-father Maj. John Smith, Jr. of the "Pocket Plantation" in
Pittsylvania Co. When I visited there upwards of ten years ago, the
property had just been purchased by a young couple who were living in it
while they were renovating it. I don't have their names readily
available (I have it somewhere in my untidy letter files), but as I
recall, he owned and operated an auto repair shop in Lynchburg, and she
was a school teacher who was going for an MA that was in some way
connected with historic preservation. Again, as I recall it, the house
when they purchased it had no indoor plumbing, and it was in disrepair.
They were "roughing it" while the renovations were being carried out.
I got news a couple of years later that they had sold the house. Does
anyone know who bought it, and whether the new owners are living in it
and and are continuing to maintain it?
The second homesite that Dr. Clement built around 1835 was on land that
he obtained when he married his second wife Sally (Turner) Cook. It was
just over the Pittsylvania county line and a little to the South in the
Turkey Cock Creek area, . When I visited it upwards of ten years ago
it was unoccupied and was deteriorating. I have learned since that it
is presently owned by two Clement brothers who are grandsons of
Nathaniel Elliott Clement, whose wife was Maud Carter Clement who wrote
The History of Pittsylvania Co. Nathaniel Elliott Clement was grandson
of Dr. George Washington Clement and Sally (Turner) Cook. I have met
and corresponded with one of the brothers. There is a newer cottage on
the place where the Clement brothers go to spend weekends and to
maintain the property as best they can.
Both homes are solidly constructed of brick and are relatively large for
the eras in which they were built.

Thanks to Richard Kessler for posting some notable Clements. It was
interesting to learn their lineage. Unfortunately, I have none to add

Marna,
You have the William Tardy Clement lineage correct. The evacuation from

Dear Lee:
The following information is copied from research done by my Mother, Josephine
Carolan Clement Echols and her sister, Katie Lee Clement McMurrey
from 1950-1980.
Nathan Glenn was the first son of Daniel (son of Isaac Clement & Ann Denham) &
Wilmoth Irby (orphan of Francis Irby & Jane LeGrande, ward of uncle, Nathan
Glenn, m. to Elizabeth, sister of Jane LeGrande) [see Halifax County records
by Carrington]
Daniel Clement b. ca 1781 VA, d. bef March 1845 TN
m. Wilmoth Irby 14 May 1807 in Pittsylvania County, VA
Wilmoth Irby b. ca 1785, Halifax County, VA, d. bef. 1826, TN
17 Dec. 1810: Daniel and Wilmoth sold land on west side of Fly Blow Creek,
land on which they lived which was drawn by Wilmoth in her father's estate.
Wilmoth could not conveniently travel to sign conveyance to Jeremiah
McCulloch. Joshua Stone, Sr., Nelson Tucker and William Smith were appointed
to go to her for certification that she did freely and voluntarily, without
any threats or persuasions of her husband relinquish her right of Dower, and
was willing that the same should be recorded. It was in 1810 that second
child, Elizabeth was born.
17 Dec. 1810: Rebecca Marlow released to Daniel Clement a tract of land on
both sides of Sycamore Creek, Pittsylvania County, VA. Daniel Clement paid
taxes on these 170 acres from 1811 to 1818.
23 Dec. 1813: Daniel Clement imports slaves. Names of slaves are those in his
father Isaac's will for Daniel and his brother Stephen who lived out his life
in Pittsylvania County.
3 Sept./28 Sept. 1814: Daniel Clement was a Private in the 2nd Corps d'Elite,
VA Militia, War of 1812. He served under Capt. Tunstall Shelton's company of
Light Infantry. The Muster Roll was dated Camp Charles City Court House.
Jan. 1817: Daniel Clement inherits from father Isaac, Pendleton District, SC
(later Anderson County). Will signed 30 Oct. 1805, proved and recorded 27
Jan. 1817, and Codicil dated 18 May 1812. WB "A," pages 206,7.
Daniel received in addition to 4 or 5 slaves, "All that part of land I live on
to the west of the main road with orchards, houses, fences, etc., to him and
his heirs of his body lawfully begotten and to remain with them forever. Half
of the griss mill and 150 yards square for the saw mill which will be laid off
after this to remain with them forever. Said saw mill and the land allotted
is not to be sold out of my family."
27 Feb. 1817: Daniel sold all of his inheritance to Stephen Butterworth, his
brother-in-law, for $25.00 in hand. DB "O," pages 270-1, State of South
Carolina, Pendleton District.
4 Feb. 1919: Daniel and Wilmoth Clement of Pittsylvania County, VA sell a
tract of land lying on both sides of Sycamore Creek, 170 acres, for $425.00.
DB 22, page 179.
Feb. 1819/ July 1822: A Twelfth Surveyor's District list including Henry
County, TN (now Carroll, Weakley and Benton Counties) shows Daniel Clement
received two deeds with a total acreage of 2,834 acres of land in the early
1800s. Land owners were not allowed to move into that area until after the
Jackson Purchase in 1818, and by that time some of the deeds had been sold to
other settlers.
The deeds were under control of the University of North Carolina and
Cumberland College (Article from Paris Post-Intelligencer, Paris, TN, 24 July
1981, by Charles D. Robbins and Shelley Scott).
Henry County, TN did not have an 1820 Census. We know that Daniel was there
in 1821 with wife, Wilmoth and 5 Children:
NATHAN GLENN b. 22 Apr. 1808, Pittsylvania County, VA, d.11 May 1872, Henry
County, TN, b. Springfield Cem, Manleyville, TN
m. (1) Nancy Allen
children: Thomas Daniel b. ca 1832 m. Elizabeth Jackson
Nathan Warren b. ca 1834 m. Mary Davidson
m. (2) Catherine Matheson/Mathewson ca 1838
(I will list 6 children and spouses later)
ELIZABETH b. 1810, Pittsylvania County VA, m. ca 1839 Littleton B. Allen
ISAAC b. 1812, Pittsylvania County VA, m, ca 1832 Martha (Patsy) Allen
AARON b. 14 Feb 1814, Pittsylvania County, VA, d. 16 Sept. 1883, Benton
County, TN, m. (1) Nancy Yarbrough
(2) Christian Buchannan
[Aaron is Progenitor of Gov. Frank Clement of TN]
STEPHEN b. ca 1816, Pittsylvania County, VA, m. (1) Nancy Buchannan 4 Oct
1844, (2) Margaret Graham 8 Oct 1862, TN
ABRAHAM b. ca 1826 pos Henry County, TN, d. bef 1860 when wife is listed as
head of household, m. Mary Jane Dortch ca 1849
RACHEL b. ca 1828 pos Henry County, TN, m. William B. Allen 25 Nov. 1841,
Henry County, TN
NOTICE the birth dates of the last two children. It is believed that Wilmoth
(Irby) Clement died and Daniel remarried. An uncle said that his grandfather
Nathan had a 1/2 brother and a 1/2 sister, but did not know the name of their
mother.
Minutes 1842-1854, Book A?: Beginning with page 144, Nov. Term of Court Benton
County, TN 1844: page 162, March Term 1845: "Personally appeared in open
court William J. Greer who was this day chosen and appointed Guardian of
Abraham Clement a minor....."
So Danial Clement died before March 1845.
Enough for now.

Dear Richard,
Thank you for the interesting post on notable descendants of Captain Benjamin CLEMENT and Susannah HILL.
I am able to identify a William Tardy CLEMENT, son of
William Joseph CLEMENT, son of
William Thomas CLEMENT (1839 - 1888), son of
William Alexander CLEMENT (1813 VA - 1876), son of
Adam CLEMENT (1782 VA - abt 1858 VA), son of
Adam CLEMENT (1738 VA - 1813 VA) and Agnes Johnson
Is this the same person you are referring to?
Will you share with us the lineages of the others (Frank Goad CLEMENT and Whittington Whiteside CLEMENT) mentioned in your post?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Marna

Hello Listers:
Some of you may already know of the following notable descendants of
Benjamin Clement:
Frank Goad Clement was governor of Tennessee when he was killed in an
automobile accident some 30 years ago. His son is now a U.S.
Representative from Tennessee.
Lt. Gen. William Tardy Clement was one of a handful of officers who were
evacuated from the Island of Corregidor in The Phillipines with General
MacArthur in 1941. He commanded the Marine landing task force for the
evasion of Japan in 1945.
Whittington Whiteside Clement was (and, I suppose, still is) State
Representative from Pittsylvania Co., VA
I'd like to hear from other listers about other notable descendants of
Benjamin Clement.
Richard K.
I'd have to say that these particular records are my most valuable. The
reason will probably be clear to you.
The majority of records from Hart County, Kentucky (created in 1819) were
destroyed in a courthouse fire in 1928. The Hart County, KY records
referenced in the following Edmonson County, KY record no longer exist. It
is my good fortune that Joshua Clemons was living in Edmonson County, KY in
1857.
The following records were transcribed as closely as possible to the way
they actually appear in the deed book.
I realize that no one on this list is currently researching anyone
mentioned in these deed book records, but posting them so that they are in
the RootsWeb archives may help someone in the future. This is the only
record I have found that specifically states the relationship of anyone to
Vachel CLEMENT.

Dear Gary,
In reading the post about your ancestor Francis William CLEMENT (b: Abt.
1765 in Pittsylvania Co., VA d: Abt. 1842 in Breathitt Co, KY) I thought
of a couple of questions.
1 - How do you know he (your Francis William CLEMENT) "sold his
inheritance, and took his family to Kentucky?" What exactly did he sell -
if it was land please tell the county, book and page # references.
2 - Your post gives the birth of your Francis William CLEMENT as
Pittsylvania Co, VA - How do you know this?
There are three others on this list who are interested in the CLEMENT
family of Breathitt Co, KY. Are you four thinking that this Breathitt Co,
KY CLEMENT family may be connected with the family William CLEMENT (d. 1760
Amelia Co, VA)? From your research, have you information about siblings
(or possible siblings) of your Francis William CLEMENT? I'd be interested
in hearing more about your research on this CLEMENT family.
Sincerely,

Fellow Listers:
I have been asked to post the documentation that I used to obtain
approval of my supplemental application to the Jamestowne Society on
Col. Edmund Jenings. While I do not wish for personal reasons to post
the same documentation as I gave to that Society, I will give you herein
sufficient documentation for you to understand the basis upon which my
supplemental application was approved.
I did not submit any documentation for the tenth generation- Edmund
Jenings m. Frances Corbin- or for the ninth generation- Isaac Hill m.
Margaret Jenings- in my supploemental application. I referred only to
another previously approved application..
For the eighth generation-Benjamin Clement m. Susannah Hill- the
documentation that I referenced included in essence the following:
1. William Clement's Amelia Co. will proved 28 Feb 1760 named
a
son Benjamin (Jantz312-314)
2. The DAR Patriot Index (1966) on Page 137 reads Benjamin
Clement:
b c. 1700 d 1780 m Susanna Hill PS VA and Susanna Hill: b c.
1700 d p. 1785 m Benjamin Clement PS VA
3. Benjamin Clement's Bible record says that his son Isaac was
born
1733 and his son Adam was born 22 Apr 1738 (Wynn111 and
Jantz320)
4. Benjamin Clement's Pittsylvania Co. will was proved on 18
Apr
1780. After making certain specific bequests, he provided
that
the rest of his estate should be divided into ten equal
parts.
He bequeathed three of the parts to the children of his
three
deceased daughters; the daughter Susannah Hill Butterworth
of
one of these deceased daughters was named. He bequeathed
the
remaining seven parts to his following children or their
heirs:
Stephen, Isaac, Benja., Adam, John, Susanna and James. His
wife's name was given as Susannah (Jantz317-319)
