I copied this from my DAR lineage papers.
My father's aunt was MAUD CARTER CLEMENT

to understand her zeal for genealogy.
I hav just acquired WEBTV, so please
excuse sloppy typing--keyboard is much
to be desired.
My grandfather, Bushrod Morrison Clement,
moved to Darlington County, South Carolina
to grow tobacco. There he met Margaret

Bushrod Morrison Clement and wife,
Margaret, moved to Muberry, Florida,

Subject: CLEMENT FAMILY

Dear Tom,
I just visited you web page and am interested in the Clement Family. I
have
an Ally Clement born abt 1790, the daughter of John Clement. I heard that
John could be the son of Benjamin Clement and Susanna Hill. Have you come
across this in your research.? Look forward to hearing back from you.
Barbara in California
Dear Richard,
Please share with us the documentation that you presented to the Jamestowne
Society to prove the descent of Susannah HILL from Edmund JENINGS.
Because many members of this group descend through Captain Benjamin CLEMENT
and Susannah HILL we are quite interested in this discussion. The list is
an appropriate forum for this discussion since it deals with the ancestry
of Susannah HILL.
Many thanks.
Sincerely,
Marna

I wish to thank Mr. Ward for his comments. I'm sure that his objective
is the same as mine- that is, "to get it right".
I don't wish to get into a protracted discussion over this website on
the subject. I will discuss the subject privately with Mr. Ward rather
than taking up subscribers' time and disk space.
I would point out that Mr. Ward did not have available to him the
documentation that I presented to the Jamestowne Society
I am, as far as I know, the one and only member of the Society who has
qualified his or her descent from Col. Edmund Jenings. Since this
qualification has aready been accomplished, however, future applicants
can "get in on my coat-tails" until the line has been proved to be
incorrect.
Richard K.
Mr. Kesler,
Thank you for your response. You are absolutely correct when you state my
objective is the same as yours. I do want "to get it right."
Although I can appreciate your desire not to take up "subscriber's time and
disk space" I feel that a great many subscribers, descendants of Susannah
Hill, have a great interest in her ancestry and any new documentation
regarding her ancestry, if any.
You wrote, "I would point out that Mr. Ward did not have available to him
the
documentation that I presented to the Jamestowne Society."
This is true Mr. Kesler. In fact, that was the ENTIRE reason for my posting
what I did to the list. I have no idea what documentation you could have
used that would PROVE the parents of Susannah Hill to the satisfaction of most
genealogists or heredtiary societies, let alone any alleged descent from
Edmund Jenings.
I urge you to share with the entire list any such documentation. If there
is anything substantive beyond what I outlined in my previous posting, please
correct me. If a line is correct and documented, it will stand on its own
merits
and in fact, should undergo scrutiny.
Respectfully,
Charles Ward
CMW12635(a)aol.com
I would like to address the recent postings that related to Susannah Hill's
alleged connection to Edmund Jenings.
I encountered this alleged connection some time ago. It was put forth by
descendants of William Hill and Mrs. Clement Read. They were children of
Isaac and Margaret (Jenings) Hill.
We know that Isaac Hill was married to Margaret Jenings in Christ Church
Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia. The descendants of William Hill and
Clement Read based their claim that Margaret Jenings was a daughter of Edmund
Jenings on the fact that Margaret Jenings had silver with the same coat-of-
arms as the family of Edmund Jenings, etc. Later generations stated it had
been given to Margaret by her father, Edmund Jenings.
Edmund Jenings would have resided in York Co., VA, not Middlesex, at the time
this "supposed" daughter got married. What's more, the class conscious
Virginians would almost certainly have noted the fact that a daughter of the
acting governor had been married in their parish, especially since it wouldn't
have been their home parish. No such mention is made.
There's been much that was written about the alleged parentage of Margaret
Jenings, but I have not seen anything that is convincing. The most convincing
thing I HAVE seen is a Visitation of Yorkshire (with additions) that does list
a daughter being born to Edmund Jenings that married into the Hill family.
However, the given names of both individuals are differnt (ie they are not
ISAAC Hill and MARGARET Jenings). One researcher went so far as to state they
may have gotten the generations of the family mixed up in stating the given
names. It is always dangerous to assume to much in genealogy. What's more,
I must wonder about the "additions" made to the visitation. They may not have
been contemporary and thus unreliable.
In my opinion, there isn't enough proof out there to place Margaret Jenings as
a daughter of Edmund Jenings. If someone can cite proof, I would be very
interested in examining it.
We must remember, that CLEMENT researchers still don't have iron-clad proof
as to Susannah Hill's surname and parentage. Yes, it is very likely she was a
HILL. A granddaughter bore the given name, "Susannah Hill." What's more, I
feel it is very likely that Susannah was the daughter of Isaac and Margaret
(Jenings) Hill. Yet, due to the lack of records, it's still something
discussed in "probables." Unfortunately, unless some record is unearthed,
that's all it will probably ever be.
I am very familiar with hereditary societies and the standards of
documentation required for membership. Standards vary. I currently serve as
governor of the TN Society of Mayflower Descendants, and I'm a member of the
Order of the Founders and Patriots of America, the Order of the Crown of
Charlemagne, the Baronial Order of Magna Charta and others. I must say I
would be somewhat disappointed in the requirements for membership and
standards of documentation of any organization that would allow membership
based on a descent from Edmund Jenings via Susannah Hill. That is based on
the documentation as I know it.
Unfortunately, all hereditary societies aren't diligent in their proof. I can
cite the example of one person that joined a hereditary society based on an
alleged descent from Robert Morris, signer of the Constitution (or is it D of
I?). At any rate, she based her descent on his daughter, Christine.
However, Robert Morris is someone for whom there is no question as to his
children. He had no daughter named Christine. Therefore, just because a
hereditary society endorses a membership application, doesn't necessarily mean
that it is accurate.
Mr. Kesler, I post this to the group with all due respect to you, sir.

Hello,
Back in December there was some discussion of Oakdale, the homeplace of
Adam Clement, Jr., son of Adam and Agnes [Johnson] Clement (then called
Vineland). I am planning a trip to Pittsylvania Co. in three weeks and
would like to visit Oakdale on my way through Campbell Co. Can anybody
give me the exact location for this home and give me directions from US 29?
The closest that's been mentioned thus far is that it's between VA 24 and
US 29. Thanks!

Subject: Re: [CLEMENT-Benjamin-L] Edmund Jenings and the Jamestowne Society
Hello Subscribers:
Documentation to prove my line back to Col. Edmund Jenings was obtained
mostly form a young man who was doing research for an honors thesis on
Col. Edmund Jenings at Washington and Lee University. He is now about
to complete- or possibly has already completed- the requirements for a
Phd. degree at Oxford University in England. The documentation is
sketchy because most of the records for the period and places of
interest have been lost. Obviously, the documentation was adequate to
obtain the acceptance of the Jamestowne Society, whose requirements are,
I'm sure you will agree, very strict.
Since I have already proved the line from Susannah Hill to Col. Edmund
Jenings, an applicant to the Society needs only to refer to my line for
acceptance of that portion of his or her line. For generations before
Susannah Hill, the applicant will have to provide primary source
documentation to the extent that it is available. Secondary sources are
accepted only when primary source documentation is lacking and when the
provider of the secondary source documentation is known by reputation to
be a competent genealogist.
Subscribers might also be interested in knowing that two other ancestors
of Susannah Hill are qualifying Jamestowne Society ancestors.
Col. Edmund Jenings was s/o Sir Edmund Jenings and Margaret Barkham of
Rippon, Yorks, England. Margaret Barkham was d/o Sir Edward Barkham of
Tottenham, Middlesex, England, who is a qualifying ancestor.
Frances Corbin, wife of Col. Edmund Jenings, was d/o Col. Henry Corbin
of Westmoreland Co., VA, who is also a qualifying ancestor.
I'm not promoting the Jamestowne Society. I just thought that some of
the subscribers would like to know that they had ancestors of whom they
can be justly proud.
If anyone is seriously interested in joining the Jamestowne Society,
drop me a private e-mail message telling me what you are interested in,
and I will assist you to the extent that I reasonably can. The
application fee the last time I checked was $300 for a lifetime
membership.
Richard K.
Dear Richard,
In your e-mail of 20 Feb you mentioned -
> Subscribers may be interested in knowing that my supplemental application
to the Jamestowne Society based on my descent from Col. (and Acting
Governor of VA 1706-1711) Edmund Jenings was approved.
>
You certainly piqued my curiosity. Please tell us more about this. What
proof did you have to provide for the lineage back from Susannah HILL?
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Sincerely,
Marna

Dear Charles,
Today I have only enough time to reply to item #2 of your e-mail of 20 Feb.
I will address the other items in a separate e-mail another day.
Here are a few secondary sources that seem to indicate that Isaac CLEMENT
(b. abt 1777 VA - d. 1860 Anderson Co, SC, son of Captain Isaac CLEMENT)
married a Priscilla CLINKSCALES -
1 - Pendleton District and Anderson County, S.C., Wills, Estates,

mentions wife 'Pricilla' and daughters Sally SHAW, Polly MATTISON, Rachel
BURRIS, and Anna KEATTS; page 87 contains an abstract of the will of
Francis CLINKSCALES, Sr. and mentions as one of his 9 children 'Priscilla
CLEMENT.'
2 - 'The Clinkscales of America - The Stream Flows on,' compiled and edited
by Wilda B. Wing, 1991, Salt Lake City FHL 929.293 C616w; page 4 specifi
cally states that Isaac CLEMENT who married Pricilla CLINKSCALES (daughter
of Francis CLINKSCALES) was the son of Captain Isaac CLEMENT and Ann
DENHAM. There is no source cited for this information.

Marna,
Allow me to respond to your recent questions regarding the children of
Captain Isaac Clement (1733-1816) and his wife, Anne Clement (d.1804).
1. I have some reservations regarding the identification of AARON Clements,
who married Hannah Clements, as being the son of Captain Isaac Clement. For
one thing, he seems a bit to old (census records indicate he was born about
1764). The ages of Captain Isaac Clement's other children would have placed
HIS son, Aarron Clement, at about 1769/70 according to my estimation.
Furthermore, Aaron Clements (who married Hannah Clements) is listed as a
"blacksmith" in the census records and I'm not sure someone that would have
been born with the advantages of a son of Captain Isaac Clement would be
listed in his eighties as a "blacksmith." It all raises questions in my mind,
but I cannot authoritatively say AARON CLEMENTS (who married Hannah Clements)
is NOT the AARON CLEMENT who was a son of Captain Isaac Clement. My
identification of this individual as Captain Isaac Clement's son was based
primarily on previous postings of Martha Acker. I would welcome any primary
source documention proving the connection.
2. I have very little information on Isaac Clement, Jr. I would appreciate
the secondary reference you have to his wife, "Priscilla Clinkscales."
3. As for Benjamin Clement, I based my information on informaiton posted to
the list. I had no information regarding his wife's surname until I had
reviewed that posting. I'm sure we all would appreciate references to primary
sources regarding the abovementioned individuals.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi,
Does anyone know the ancestory or descendents of CORNELIA EMMA CLEMENT. I
believe she was born in Pittsylvania CO., VA. She was born May 30, 1861 and
died Feb 14, 1907 in Lynchburg, Campbell CO., VA. She was buried in Springhill
Cemetery along with her husband. JESSEE HOWARD JONES Jan 9, 1851-Jan 12,
1900. They had one daughter THELMA JONES born about 1895. Did she live to
adulthood? Have descendents? Who were Miss Emma's parents (as family called
her). Any information appreciated.

I hope while y'all are looking for Marna's John CLEMENT (1743 - 1816)
you'll keep an eye out for any information you may run across for MY John
CLEMENT (b. abt 1759 - d. abt 1782).
This John CLEMENT is the son of William CLEMENT, Jr. (1704 - 1766) and his
second wife, Ann Walker. William CLEMENT, Jr. and Ann Walker were married
23 Nov 1758 in Amelia Co., VA.
The other children of William CLEMENT, Jr. and Ann Walker were Edmund
Walker CLEMENT and Ann CLEMENT. (Has anyone ever found information on
Edmund Walker CLEMENT - supposedly a Rev. War soldier?)
I understand completely what Marna is saying about not documenting
everything properly in my beginning days - now I am having to go back and
put things together. The information I have on John CLEMENT (b. abt 1759 -
d. abt 1782) I got from someone who had traced the family and given me the
information but I have found some of it to be incorrect. This person is
now deceased and I have been unable to track down anyone in his family to
try and find his notes to see where the information came from.
I do have this quote:
"23 May 1782 - Certificate for Administratioin estate of John Clement
granted Sarah Clement appraisement of slaves and current moneys. Sarah
Clement appointed guardian of Edward Clement and Nancy Clement, minors.
Sarah Clement's second husband was Edward Fowler."
The Edward CLEMENT mentioned above is my great, great, great grandfather
and I need to prove the connection to John.
I apologize if this is confusing - it's confusing to me, too. There are
too many John CLEMENTs. Thanks for any help.
David Clement
Okay you veteran CLEMENT researchers - Tom, Charles, DeRoy, David, Joy,
Diane, Joseph, Elaine, et al -
Will you please help me out with this one? I have to admit that my files
are not in perfect order, my notes are not either, in my beginning days I
did not document everything as thoroughly as I now wish I had, and my
memory is failing me. :)) Nevertheless, I still would like to verify one
piece of information (i.e., the parents of John CLEMENT (1743 - 1816) ) -
for which the only printed source I have is a family group sheet submitted
to the LDS church (in the early 1970s) by a now deceased man whose widow
knows nothing about his research.
This family group sheet is for John CLEMENT (b. abt 1743 VA - d. 1816
Clarke Co, GA) with first wife Hannah (?) and 9 children (the same 8 as in
the will of John CLEMENT previously posted by Martha Acker to this list in
Sep 1998 - plus one named Green). The parents for this John CLEMENT are
listed as Capt. Benjamin CLEMENT and Susannah HILL. The only source listed
on this form is 'Marriage Book "A" Clarke Co, GA."
Please tell me if you have knowledge of primary sources that connect this
John CLEMENT with Capt. Benjamin CLEMENT and Susannah HILL. In the absence
of primary evidence, have you found secondary or circumstantial evidence
that points in that direction?
There are six members of this list who descend through this John CLEMENT
(representing 4 of his children). Please tell us about primary sources you
have for his ancestry.
The answer must be here somewhere in our collective knowledge. Let's start
a dialog about this and see what becomes of it.
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Marna
