Subject: Clement Clements
Dear Marna,
Last year I did quite a bit of research, and I will have go go back to
various sources to document this, but I will tell you what I remember.
In the Pittsylvania Tithables of 1767, a Clement Clements, Vardiman
Clements, and Joseph Clements are listed. Since this is where Captain
Benjamin Clement lived, there is probably a family relationship.
Clement Clements and his brother Gabriel Clements both fought in the
revolutionary war, and are both buried in Ga. They fought in Marions
brigate under General Marion in South Carolina.
I know that at a wedding in South carlolina it lists Cornelius Clements,
Clement Clements and his brother Gabriel Clements, and Joseph Clements, and
Vardiman Clements. This is from the Revolutionary War Pensions.
In another book...."JOHN CLEMENTS.......One of the citizens of southwest
Georgia who began their careers in log cabin homes....................was
born in Irvin Co Ga on April 7 1853, and represents a family that has been
known with respect on this side of the Atlantic since colonial times.
Joseph Clements, his Great Grandfather, according to the best information,
was a native of
Virginia, whence he moved to south carolina during colonial times, and
spent the rest od his days there. He...............served as a soldier in
the continental armies in the revolution. Cornelius Clements, the
Grandfather, was born in the darlington District of South
carolna............"
I do not believe that Clement Clements was the son of Stephen because
stephen moved to wilkes co Ga..................and i have seen references
to someone else as his father......... but I will have to
look..............
Stephen Clement Bader

Michele,
Two in one day is almost too much!! I really believe that your Rachel was the same
Rachel Clement "Runnells" named as a dtr in John Clement's will of Clarke Co. GA
1816. Check the these Clement archives for the will I contributed a month or so ago,
and get back to me. Everything you say fits in perfectly with what I know of the
family, although I did not know the first name of Rachel's husband. I have worked on
this family for a long time, and have never found a descendant until this list.

Barbara,
I have been researching John Clement who is the father of your Alley who mar
Norris Hendon. At his death, John's wife was named Mary, a previous wife was a
Mrs. Patience Hendon, mother of Norris. I do not know who the mother of John's
children was, but it was neither of these women. Perhaps the 1st one was also
named Mary. So far I have been unable to get John out of Clarke Co. GA with a
positive connection to Capt. Benjamin.

I have a Rachel Clements married to a "Runnels" which could very well be
Reynolds. She was a daughter of John Clements and was born around the
time Michele indicated. Several other children of John's were married
in Clark Co, GA and Greene Co, GA just before and after 1800.
Don't know if this will help but it may provide a clue.

Hi!
I saw a reference in today's postings about Huguenot Clements and thought I'd
pass along something I heard recently.
I met a man whose last name was Klementz from NC. He told me that the family
came from the Alsace/Lorraine area. He said the family "tale" was that
Klementz/Clements were the same family, but with the passing back and forth of
this region between Germany and France, those who were "loyal" to the German
side changed their spelling to Klementz and those who allied with the French
kept the Clements spelling. I suspect that some may have changed the spelling
whenever it was "politically correct." Perhaps there could've been an element
of Protestant vs. Catholic there as well?
Michele
Hello!
My name is Michele Valkenaar and I live in Knoxville, TN. My Clements ancestor
of current interest is Rachel Clements/Clemmons, b. 10 Oct. 1775, SC.
I do not yet have a proven connection to Benjamin Clement, but the
circumstantial evidence is great and I hope you can help provide the clues that
will allow me to prove the connection or rule it out.
Rachel married Hamilton REYNOLDS ca. 1791 in GA, and shortly thereafter, they
moved back to the Pendleton District, where they remained until approximately
1812, when they moved to Tennessee.
Hamilton and Rachel Clements Reynolds had eight known children. They are:
1. Elizabeth, b. 30 June 1793, SC
2. Hugh Riah, b. 5 November 1795, SC, m. Elizabeth HAMM in TN, ca 1815.
3. David B., b. ca. 1797, SC
4. Nancy, b. 8 June 1798, SC
5. Thomas, b. ca. 1800, SC
6. Isaac Clements, b. 2 Jan. 1802, SC, m. Elizabeth GARRETT in AL, ca. 1828.
7. Millage Hamilton, b. 17 Apr. 1805, SC, m. Nancy FLATT in TN, 1824.
8. Polly, b. 15 Jan. 1807, SC
The earliest records of Hamilton are his Rev. War (GA Militia) pension
application and a bounty land grant made to him in 1784 in GA. In the same
county in which he was granted land, the record indicates that a Benjamin, Adam
and William Clements were also granted land a few months later.
I've long puzzled over the name choice for Hamilton and Rachel's first son (Hugh
Riah), as it does not appear in any prior generations of the Reynolds family,
yet the naming of the first son was traditionally important. When I learned
that there was a Hugh Clements living in Pendleton District of SC in 1800, the
bell rang. I don't know why I didn't consider that the name might have come from
Rachel's side of the family.
Also, I've not found Hamilton and Rachel listed in any census prior to 1820
(Lawrence Co., TN). There is also a William Clements living near them in this
census, age 26-45. Prior to that, I am assuming that they were living with
another household in SC, and since I know that Hamilton's family remained in
Wilkes Co., GA, I would suspect that they were living with some member of
Rachel's family.
When I saw a posting that named the children of William Clement and Capt.
Benjamin Clement of VA, which includes Rachel, Hugh, Jeriah and Isaac, I figured
I'd found a good match. My theory is that Rachel is a daughter of either Hugh
or Isaac Clements. I need their dates of birth and death, names of any other
family members, and so on to see if this theory holds up.
Quite a few of the neighbors and subsequent family members originating from the
Pendleton District were also found in the Giles/Lawrence Co., TN in 1820. These
include the HAMMs, BLASSENGAMEs, CANTRELLs, GARRETTs, KELLEYs, GOOCHs and
MELTONs.
Rachel Clements Reynolds died in 1833 in Lauderdale Co., AL. After her death,
her husband, Hamilton, moved to McNairy Co., TN where he remained for the
balance of his life. Their eldest son, Hugh Riah Reynolds, is my 3
gr-grandfather. He married Elizabeth Hamm, the daughter of John HAMM, Sr. (Rev.
War veteran from SC) and Phoebe Jane BLASSENGAME.
Their children were Thomas Hamilton (married HURST, SIMPSON, McKINNEY), William
Carroll (married MOORE, WILES, BUTLER), Nancy Emily (married BAILEY), James
Marion (married MORTON, HIGGINS), John Wiggins (married HARDWICK), Phoebe Jane
(married OLIVE), Huriah L. (married CANTRELL), Wesley Blassengame (married
BREWER), George Riley (married HAMM), Joseph Pleasant (married RAGAN), Anderson
Pinckney (married CANTRELL), Winston Pettus (married HAMM, WASHINGTON, BELL),
Elizabeth Dorinda (married HOUGH) and Richard Randolph (married GRIFFIN).
These families lived in the Wayne/Lawrence/Giles Cos., TN, Lauderdale Co., AL
and Alcorn/Tishomingo/Prentiss Cos., MS areas until after the Civil War, when
they began migrating, primarily to Arkansas and Texas.
I will appreciate any assistance and information you can provide in this search.
In return, I will certainly share any of my findings for the benefit of others.

Hello Tom-
I read on the list a note to you from Carol in GA wrote you about your
website. The Huguenot Lines sound interesting. Could you let me know your
website address so that I can "check it out". Thanks,

Hi Tom:
Thanks for you reply and would you believe I have a connection to the
"Huguenot Lines" you have on your website....Chastain, Trabue, LeSueur,
Bryant/Bryan, Stinson, VA (Henrico, Albemarle, Goochland, Buckingham,
Cumberland Cos.).
Also, have ancestors from MD (Frederick and Carroll Cos.).

I agree with Marna. There are several theories regarding William Clement's
ancestry, but they are all "theories." No primary source records have been
found that confirm his parentage. I've always felt it was a grave insult to
our ancestors to heedlessly record the names of individuals that may not be
our true forebears.

I agree with Marna and Martha - I think we all want our ancestors to be as
accurate as possible. At some point I would like to find
William's parents but I want them to REALLY be his parents.
William patented 1225 acres in Amelia Co.(Patent 17-114, 5 June 1736). In
his will he left fourteen slaves - two each to his children. How could he
maintain such a large amount of land with so few people?
At the time of the land patent he lived in King William County - does
anyone know if he owned any land there?
I ran across the following references to deeds on a website - and Marna
agrees that the information there seems to be authentic:
#1 Deed From James Clement to Field Robertson (for land bounded, in part,
by Charles Goad's land,) Jan 2, 1778.
#2 Deed From John Goad and Margret his wife to Benj Clement, 26 Jan 1774.
#3 Deed of Trust Between John Goad and James Mitchell, 16 Nov 1773.
