Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Listers, just a few points to remember regarding this list,
E-MAIL COPYRIGHT
Recently in the Rootsweb magazine there appeared a notice concerning mailing
list netiquette and the 'golden rule' of e-mail content written by another
person/s that a subscriber posts to the list from another list or one
received privately. What this is, is a breach of that persons copyright if
you have first not sought their permission to forward it to the list.
We often seen "seen on another list", or, "thought this may be useful to
someone". Please do not assume that the author of the original author wanted
their e-mail (or part thereof) read by anyone else other than the to the
holder of the address they sent it to in the beginning. If you think that
you would like to post it somewhere else . contact the author and ask their
permission first.
The Rootsweb AUP (Acceptable use Policy) at
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html discusses the original e-mail
content ownership.
OFF TOPIC MESSAGES TO THE LIST
Please remember to keep your postings to the list relevant to the list
title. Every time a message is posted to the list, it is stored in the
RootsWeb.com archives. If you post 'willy nilly' to the list it uses up
vital archive space where more important information could have been stored.
By the same token, when replying to a message, make sure you include the
CORRECT subject information and ONLY the message you are replying to. It is
also worthwhile to just <snip> what you are replying to, or, editing out
standard footers such as those used by yahoo.com and msn.com.
If you feel that there is something that you absolutely, positively must
post to the list but know it is off topic then run it by me first. List
administrators can all be contacted at:
(list name) -ADMIN(a)Rootsweb.com.

Family history researchers, who are often addicted to their daily
"fix" of mail from their favourite RootsWeb lists, began sending e-mails
to their lists in an attempt to ascertain whether or not the lists were
working, for some, alarm set in.
Don't panic if RootsWeb's list mail doesn't appear to be reaching your
mailbox as it normally should. Instead, do the following:
1. Check the HelpDesk's yellow announcement box for news of any
technical problems at RootsWeb or with your ISP's delivery of list mail
from RootsWeb. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/
or click on HELP tab at the top of any RootsWeb page.
2. Check your currently subscribed lists here:
http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/
or click on the PASSWORDS tab at the top of any RootsWeb page.
3. Check the threaded mailing list archives to view the current
month/year messages for your lists at:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/
4. Contact the list administrator for help or information by writing to:
LISTNAME-admin(a)rootsweb.com (replace the word LISTNAME with the actual
name of the list -- using no -L or -D). NOTE: If there is a general
problem involving RootsWeb mail delivery to a specific ISP and the list
administrator to whom you are writing also uses the same ISP, he/she
probably will not receive your inquiry for the duration of the problem
with that ISP.
5. Contact your ISP's tech support representative and explain that
RootsWeb list mail is not spam and this is e-mail you wish to receive.
Enlist the support of your ISP in resolving the matter. Internet Service
Providers should be more than willing to assist you -- their paying
customer -- so that you are able to receive the mail you want.
Here is what NOT to do if you suspect you are not receiving your mailing
list messages:
1. Do not send repeated messages to the list asking if the list is
working or if anyone has received your message.
2. Do not send any "TESTING" messages to a list.
Remember that just because you are not receiving a message you have sent
to the list doesn't mean that other list subscribers are not seeing your
repeated messages and becoming annoyed by them. The mailing lists are
for genealogical research for a specific subject and not for test
messages. Use the above guidelines instead to help resolve any non-
receipt of mail problems.
You will find guidelines concerning non-receipt of RootsWeb list mail in
a recent issue of the RootsWeb Review. You might want to print out this
information and save for handy reference.

1: WWW.Rootsweb.com
'HELP' page IS JUST THAT - PLEASE USE IT.
The YELLOW BOXES advise if there is a problem.
(Please don't post TEST MESSAGES to the list ... it WASTES vital archive
space.)
2: DO NOT FLAME OTHER SUBSCRIBERS AND MOST OF ALL ME.
(I have been known to behave like a firecracker)
3: IF THE LIST YOUR SUBSCRIBE TO HAS A SET PROTOCOL - ABIDE BY IT.
(You received this when you subscribed. The protocol is there for a purpose
for all people and not 'your' personal agenda)
4: DO NOT POST OFF TOPIC MAIL TO THE LIST.
(If you think you must, then contact me off list first to check if it is
appropriate)

OUT-OF-THE-OFFICE. Going to be out of the office on vacation or business
trip and want to let all your friends know you won't be replying to any
messages for a time? You might decide to use an auto responder to answer
your incoming messages while you are gone. While, this might work for
business correspondence, don't forget your genealogy mailing lists.
Please set your auto responder so that it does not reply to RootsWeb
list mail -- either to the list posters or to the list address itself
because list administrators and subscribers find these out-of-the-office
messages annoying.
In fact, most list admins will unsubscribe you from a list if they
receive or are informed about auto-replies coming from your subscribed
e-mail account. Solution? Unsubscribe from your mailing lists while you
are away temporarily. Re-subscribe upon your return.
NEW ANCESTRY.COM SUBSCRIPTION: The Family and Local Histories
Collection. Currently this growing collection includes 20,000 searchable
books and more than 75 million names. While compiled family histories
are secondary, rather than primary, sources, they can provide valuable
clues that can help break through brick walls and further your research.
Local histories also add depth and interest to your family history.
This new subscription is the best place online to look for previously
published research on your ancestor. Locating these types of materials
in the past usually required costly and extensive research and travel to
libraries and archives across the country and around the world, but
Ancestry.com brings them as close as your home computer.
