Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Listers, just a few points to remember regarding this list,
E-MAIL COPYRIGHT
Recently in the Rootsweb magazine there appeared a notice concerning mailing
list netiquette and the 'golden rule' of e-mail content written by another
person/s that a subscriber posts to the list from another list or one
received privately. What this is, is a breach of that persons copyright if
you have first not sought their permission to forward it to the list.
We often seen "seen on another list", or, "thought this may be useful to
someone". Please do not assume that the author of the original author wanted
their e-mail (or part thereof) read by anyone else other than the to the
holder of the address they sent it to in the beginning. If you think that
you would like to post it somewhere else . contact the author and ask their
permission first.
The Rootsweb AUP (Acceptable use Policy) at
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html discusses the original e-mail
content ownership.
OFF TOPIC MESSAGES TO THE LIST
Please remember to keep your postings to the list relevant to the list
title. Every time a message is posted to the list, it is stored in the
RootsWeb.com archives. If you post 'willy nilly' to the list it uses up
vital archive space where more important information could have been stored.
By the same token, when replying to a message, make sure you include the
CORRECT subject information and ONLY the message you are replying to. It is
also worthwhile to just <snip> what you are replying to, or, editing out
standard footers such as those used by yahoo.com and msn.com.
If you feel that there is something that you absolutely, positively must
post to the list but know it is off topic then run it by me first. List
administrators can all be contacted at:
(list name) -ADMIN(a)Rootsweb.com.

Hello everyone ... this is an update for this mailing list. Please read it and file it somewhere for future reference ... I am sure an occasion will arise where you will find this information more than useful.

MANAGING E-MAIL
People utilising RootsWeb.com mailing lists usually subscribe to more than one list therefore you may like to keep them separated. Most e-mail software contains a facility for creating folders and for filtering e-mail to those folders. Makes e-mail life much simpler, that is of course assuming that your e-mail software has this capability. If you are unsure of folders and filters then refer to your own e-mail software's Help facility to determine exactly how to do this.
Personally, I find that this system keeps my various mailing list messages organised. I need not worry about which mailing list what message came from if I do not subscribe to the Digest Mode.
The DIGEST MODE is a much simpler method of receiving list messages. For instance, instead of receiving 10 separate messages you receive ONE listing all the 10 e-mails. If there is one specific message you want to retain highlight it and copy and paste it into WordPad (or word) to keep for future reference.
What I do if it something I want to keep in my e-mail folders, is I copy and paste it into an e-mail and send it back to myself then put it in the folder that I want to keep it in. (Bit different . I know).
MAILING LIST PARTICIPATION.
I ask that people participate more actively to the list they are subscribed to, although some lists, such as SURNAME lists are usually the most inactive because of their nature. However, for the other type lists, in order to MAXIMISE your opportunities your participation is necessary. You are only going to get out of your subscription what you put into it.
(a) For those people who are subscribed to a SURNAME list ... you are able to actively participate by posting your interests to the list ... please remember to include THE YEAR (or there about). When you put the town/city in you also INCLUDE the county/state/country ... not everyone on the list is a walking talking geographical encyclopedia. Remember to put your SURNAME in capital letters for easy recognition. (Administrators are usually the only ones who use capital letters in messages to the list).
The benefits of putting this information to the list are that it not only helps you to link up with other subscribers of the same family, it places the information in Rootsweb.com archives enabling web searchers to locate YOU.
Besides these opportunities, if you give enough information people who have resources or live in to same place as your research may look up the information for you ... I know from personal experience that limited information given will not exact a response from these people.
(b) For those people who are subscribed to a RESOURCE list, perhaps you might let people know what town/county/state/country you live in and what resources you have that may assist others on the list.
Remember ... we are all subscribed to the list with a common goal in mind ... to reclaim our heritage from the history books and to help others find theirs ...if you DON'T participate you CANNOT maximise your opportunities.
COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING
This is a gentle reminder that advertising for commercial gain is not permitted on this - or any of Rootsweb's Lists.
I have instituted one exception to this rule on lists that I administer regarding the promotion of forthcoming events relevant to family history, genealogy, historic re-enactments and the like, where an entrance fee may be charged, to cover administration costs. However, please run this by me first just to 'keep the slate clean', so to speak.
LIST DEFAULT
The mailing list is set to automatically send your reply to the list. When responding please CHECK the address your e-mail is going to just in case the mailing list is not where you want it to go.
Please ensure that you have the CORRECT SUBJECT HEADING . because of the default setting the subject line will be the 'digest' (if subscribed in that mode).
TEXT
Please -
(a) DO NOT send attachments to the list - Rootsweb.com does not forward these to the mailing lists.
(b) Insert graphics into e-mails sent to the list.
(c) Use fancy fonts etc - ends up by sending 'gobbly gook' to the list. Rootsweb.com mailing lists only except plain text.
Finally, while I have this opportunity a reminder of those things called 'DO's' and 'DO NOT's' ..
1: DO NOT POST VIRUS WARNINGS TO THE LIST.
(If you are concerned, contact me off list)
2: DO NOT FLAME OTHER SUBSCRIBERS AND MOST OF ALL ME.
(I have been known to behave like a firecracker)
3: IF THE LIST YOUR SUBSCRIBE TO HAS A SET PROTOCOL - ABIDE BY IT.
(You received this when you subscribed. The protocol is there for a purpose for all people and not 'your' personal agenda)
4: DO NOT POST OFF TOPIC MAIL TO THE LIST.
(If you think you must, then contact me off list first)
5: KEEP YOUR WELCOME MESSAGE.
(You received this when you first subscribed .... It contains list protocol of how to 'unsubscribe')
6: WWW.Rootsweb.com 'HELP' page IS JUST THAT - PLEASE USE IT.
(Please don't post willy nilly to the list ... it WASTES vital archive space.)
If you have any further queries regarding this message to the list then please contact me OFF LIST.
good luck with your research everyone

As it is almost the end of another year :) I thought that it was a good idea for an email round up :)
This means that you post a message to the list and let everyone know who it is that you are researching. One never knows what the new year will bring.
At the same time I will be checking the validity of addresses and if there is not a response from an address then it will assumed as a dead address and removed from the list.
I wish every subscriber the best for the coming festive seasons and good luck with your research for 2005
Bright Blessings
