Hi folks,
In a message today, Dee Clem was mentioned. I have been told that she
has a lot in information on the Harlan County, KY Clems. I'd love to be
able to reach her. Can anyone help me?
I wish to thank the list participants for their postings. I have
especially enjoyed the colorful writing style! How great to get a peek
into the personality behind the list names.
I know well that it gets discouraging to go for months without a real
lead or finding new information. There are some things that we'll never
know, but there's a lot of information out there and with the
internet...the access to it is becoming more available. Don't worry
about asking the same old questions, KEEP ASKING!! One of these days,
the right bells will ring for someone and then...
List Administrator, Ina Clem Johnson
Hi Donna and all-
I too have a Clem line that is or seems untraceable.
I have a S. FRANCES CLEM born 8-16-1864 in Tn.
Dec. 25, 1879 in Giles co. Tn she married a widower with 2 children- Atlas
Montezuma Reeves. Her children with Altas or Monty as he was called ,were
Hortense Montezuma Reeves b.11-05-1881 TN
Ethel b. Mar 1886
Harry b. Oct. 1897
William b.Dec.1894
S. Frances Clem had a brother James/Jim Ed Clem who I think married Jennie
Crittendon on 2-11-1881 in Giles Co.
Frances or Fannie died 1-05-1929 in Jax, Fl. and on her death certificate
it did not give names but that her father was from AL and mother born in Ky.
This is confirmed on the 1880 Giles Co. Tn census. Her marriage bond didn't
even offer a clue.
So... any help out there??
Thanks, Pam

Hi! In response to the request that we post more often, I'd like to
tell you about my Clems and see what help you can be!
My maiden name was Clem (b. 1948).
My father was James Edward Clem (1918 - 1996), son of Charles Edward
Clem (1897 - 1981) and Ruby Beatrice "Trussie" Ebbert (1899 - 1978).
Charles Edward Clem was the son of Simeon Clem (1865 - 1946) and Clara
Craig (1874 - 1945). Now it gets interesting.
According to what I can find (old marriage license applications,
etc) Simeon's father's name was John. By the way, I was born in Henry
County, my father and grandparents in Madison County, not sure where
Simeon was born, but Clara was born in Henry County.
Now, I found a cousin who is 83 - she says Simeon had some
brothers: Simon (m. Cora ?) - they are buried in the Miller Cemetery in
Middletown, Henry County IN. Charles Edward (m. Sarah Elizabeth
"Lizzie" Craig). Two half brothers, Benjamin and John. According to
all family records, John's wife was "a squaw" (uncomplimentary and no
offense meant). This cousin says she was Sioux. No name found. No
record of a marriage found, but I've been told there was one . . .
Clem researcher, Dee Clem cannot connect us to any of her lines,
however she "suspects" that they are descended from a Simeon J. Clem
who was born in VA and then came to IN and is buried in Howard County.
Since Simeon is a definite change from Simon (pronouced basically
like the ape family - no comments, please), it seems reasonable.
This Simeon was born in Shenandoah, VA. That's all I know. I found
records of an Isaac Clem who settled in this area before it was IN in an
OH history, who married a Clara (?). Isaac was born in Shenandoah VA.
Can't connect them either, although the dates would be consistent with
the Simeon J. born in VA and he could be a sibling.
She (Dee Clem, researcher) says the Sioux would be consistent, as
she also suspects he was in North Dakota for a time. But again, this
strand of Clem's is not in either of her published volumes, nor in her
database files.
Sooooooooo, can any of you help me with this tangled web?
Thank you!
Donna (Clem) Arthur

Dear Clem List Members:
Our list has grown by leaps and bounds since its very humble
beginnings. I thank each of you for hanging in there and contributing
as you can. In the next month, lets all try to post to the list. Even
to re-circulate old questions or comments can be greatly beneficial to
new list members and to the old settlers who may have missed your
posting the first time.
I saw this on the Clemmons List and wanted to share this with the Clem
researchers. My Clem family came to SE Kentucky (Harlan County) from
Virginia. I have documentation that my last known "Clem" was called
"Clemmons" up to the 1840 census.
Many Clem researchers quickly learn that their surname was shortened by
someone for some reason (although it sure has caused genealogists some
headache). Here's the message from the Clemmons list:
Researching Clemons/CLEMMONS in Kentucky and Tennessee. Three children:
John Wesley Clemmons born l0 November 1812, Adaline Clemmons born 8
April l8l5 in southern Kentucky (this only data known of birth place);
Charles Augustine Clemmons born l5 Dec l8l6 lin White Co. Tennessee.
Need parents. These three appeared next in Boone Co. Missouri at their
marriage dates of l836. John married Marilda TURNER, Adaline married
Clifton B. HENSLEY, and Augustine married Mary Jane HENSLEY. Augustine
moved on into Oregon in l845, Adaline lived and died in Boone Co.
Missouri, and John Wesley moved into Linn Co. Missouri where he died.

I realize that some of you may not be affected by this initially, but in
reality all of us could be impacted by it eventually. I thought you'd
want to see this and maybe join in the effort to prevent the destruction
of these two cemeteries.
Donna

Hi all,
I wanted to pass along some information I have received about a cemetery
or 2 in Sullivan Co. According to this information, a cemetery named
Brainer Cemetery is currently in danger of being moved by a local coal
company. This cemetery is said to be a Civil War cemetery, though I
don't know if this means a Civil War era cemetery or a cemetery with
Civil War vets buried there.
The mine has ran several ads in a Sullivan-area newspaper, so my sources
say, and the deadline for family to protest was supposed to be this past
Thursday or Friday. I wish I had learned of this earlier so I could've
passed it along much sooner.
There is another cemetery that the mine wants to move. It is said to be
the Bennett Cemetery. I don't know where it's located, except near
Hymera. The Brainer Cemetery is located on County Road 300E in Sullivan
Co.
If anyone has any information about this, please feel free to post it to
the list. I hope my source (a guy from Sullivan Co. who works with my
husband) has given accurate information and I'm passing along helpful
info to you all. I felt I should go ahead and post this even without
knowing all the story, though, as I think cemetery removal is something
people should know about. Many Greene Co. families moved back and forth
between here and Sullivan Co., so ties between our area and the Sullivan
area are strong. I thought maybe someone on our list might know more
about this situation and could shed some light on it.
Also, anyone with a listing of either the Brainer or Bennett Cemeteries
can feel free to post listings to this list if they would like. Maybe
someone will recognize a family member of theirs.
Diane :)
