CLEGHORN in Edinburgh, MLN, SCT
by Valerie and Terry Anderson
Hello Greg and all,
I am a new subscriber to the Cleghorn list.
My particular interest is Alexander CLEGHORN who married on 19 Jan 1704 to
Helen PATERSONE daughter of Thomas PATERSONE at St. Cuthbert's parish,
Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.
Alexander CLEGHORN was a merchant Burges of Edinburgh and Baillie
(local magistrate). In 1732 he lived at "Fairlee-hope" which could be a
building or a suburb. His children were Thomas (1704, died as an infant?),
Christian (female)(1705), Helen 1707, then Thomas 1708, Margaret 1710,
Rachel 1711, Elizabeth 1715, Eupham 1716 and Adam 1721 and Jane( b? married
1722 to Mungo RANNY.) There could be more.
So it seems only two sons lived to adulthood. Adam was alive in
1764, but not sure if he married.
Thomas CLEGHORN married Sophia SIEVEWRIGHT 1732 at St. Cuthbert's,
Edinburgh, MLN, SCT and had 11 children: Elizabeth 1733, Helen 1734 (died
as a child?), Alexander 1736, Margaret 1738 (died as a child?), Sophia 1740,
Helen 1741, David 1743, Esther 1744, Margaret 1745, Thomas 1748, and Adam
1749.
I have collected much information for births and started on marriages
for the CLEGHORN family in St. Cuthbert's parish, also known as Westkirk.
These records in the mid 1700s are quite detailed, giving the names,
occupations and suburbs of residence of the witnesses to christenings,
sometimes four or five, which makes it easy to establish relationships over
the generations.
There are other families besides mine there. Greg, who are your people
in Edinburgh? Does anyone else have a CLEGHORN Edinburgh connection?
Happy hunting,
(Mrs.) Valerie Anderson

>Hi Colleen,
>My Cleghorns come from Peebles-shire in Scotland. I have records back to
