My question came mostly from the fact I had read a bio on Samuel Cleage which said he had a brother named James Clegg and there is also a James Clagg nearby Samuel Cleage on the 1820 Botetourt, VA census.
But I've never seen any other connection to Samuel & James beyond that and most bios for Alexander & Susannah don't mention a son named James.
And, as you said, most of the children list James as being born in Virginia whereas it seems he should have been born in Pennsylvania if he were the son of Alexander & Susannah.
I've also seen others list James' father as being "Alexander Clegg" but there are at least two Alexander Cleggs in the PA/VA area who seem to get confused with one another and possibly a third in VA.

In the 1880 & 1900 census Andrew Clagg, son of James, born in Gallia County, Ohio about 1827, says his father was born at sea on the Atlantic Ocean. You are the 1st person I have seen that connects James to either parent. The 1850 Gallia County, Ohio census shows James & Elizabeth both born in Va.
In that census James was 70 & Elizabeth was 57 and I haven't been able to find either of them after that.
Elizabeth is half sister to my GG Grandfather Andrew Jackson Cremeans. Her mother was Eleanor Wall & AJ's mother was Sarah Anders.
