My group of Cleggs came down the Natchez Trace and settled in what was then Choctaw County, Miss. Today it is Webster County and they mostly settled near where the town of Mathiston is located.
I haven't ever seen any connections to the Burgess or Mallard families, but that doesn't mean there weren't any. Hope this helps.......

In March of 2007 Wayne R. Roberts wrote of James Clegg b. 5 September, 1705
+ Mary. My e-mail to him at his hotmail address was undeliverable.
Are you still on the list?
Have recently been reading THE DIARY OF JAMES CLEGG OF CHAPEL EN LE FRITH
and the two lines that particularly interest me are children of James CLEGG b. 5
September 1705 and children of John CLEGG born 24 Mrch 1712/13.
Both of these sons settled in Manchester. Additionally JAMES CLEGG
(1679-1755) had sons Joseph CLEGG who went to London (born 1716) and a son Benjamin
who also became a minister ... marriage/children not mentioned.
The diary is wonderful for recording births of James born 1705 children and
several were even baptised by James CLEGG, their grandfather. Would you be
willing to compare the names of James/Mary's children? The problem with
interpreting the diary is in the case of sickness or death of a child ... names
are not always given.
The Rev. James CLEGG who died in 1755 had a brother John of Shawfield and a
sister Elizabeth (Betty) possibly m. to Heaton and then Smethurst.

Am currently reading THE DIARY OF JAMES CLEGG OF CHAPEL EN LE FRITH
1708-1755. Although this man served in Chinley, he was born in Shawfield which was
near Rochdale and several of his ancestors are buried at St. Chad's.
James CLEGG (1679-1755) had two sons who settled in Manchester.
James born 1705 m. Mary ... multiple children.
John b. 24 March 1712/3 married (Miss Parks?) ... had children
Additionally son Joseph b. 1716 who went to London
Son Benjamin b. 1724 who was a non-conformist minister and during the diary
time unmarried and in the Derbyshire area.
James CLEGG (1679-1755) also had a brother, John, of the Shawfield area.
Brother John CLEGG and all children mentioned above of James CLEGG were
living at the time of his death in 1755.
Also mentioned in the diary was ISAAC CLEGG of Manchester ... it's not known
if they were related but they were definitely friends.
Does anyone tie in with any of these names?
Janet in California

Hello Brantley,
Thanks for the information about the Cleggs. Do you know which county in Mississippi they moved to? Do you know of any early family Clegg connections to the Burgess or the Mallard families of SC or Georgia?
Regards, Robert Hughes

Hello and thanks for the information about Jonathan Clegg.
Did Jonathan Clegg stay in Walton County, Georgia or did he eventually move to another area?
I have a family connection to a John Burgess family that lived across the Savannah River from Edgefield County, SC and to a man named John Hollingsworth Clegg who was born in England. His son moved to the US but I loose track of his son and I can't actually tell if the Edgefield, SC Cleggs are any relation to the English Cleggs.
Do you have any Burgess or Mallard family connections?
Regards, Robert Hughes
