It's been awhile since I've been on the CLEGG list but recent breakthroughs
have brought me back.
Richard CLEGG married Elizabeth Hartley in the Manchester Cathedral on
January 30, 1793. They were Unitarian, lived in Manchester and had the following
children:
William born October 15, 1793, christened November 17, 1793. William (a
watchmaker) was born again and became a Methodist minister ... two marriages,
many children
Jas. born August 7, 1795, christened September 18, 1795
Sarah born March 18, 1798, May 5, 1798
may be the Sarah who m. John Sampson on March 12, 1821
Joseph born May 2, 1801, Christened May 31, 1801. Married Mary _________,
two children living in May 1830. His wife died in 1833, fate of children
unknown. Joseph married again in Australia fathering seven.
My ancestor.
Elizabeth b. 17 August 1803, Christened 18 September 1803
Mary Ann born 27 July 1805, Christened 15 September 1805
may have married James Mills, 27 May 1831.
All christenings Unitarian. Parts of this family remained in Manchester.
William had ties to Staley Bridge and surrounding areas.
Any connections?
Janet

Mary,
Thank you for your reply. I descend from 2 CLEGG lines. I am trying to find out if both of them originate with Thomas and Mary CLEGG. I will send what info I have on my lines later. I have small children that need my attention right now : )

I have 3 Alexander Cleggs in my Data Files. One of them is Alexander born abt. 1798 in PA, buried Scott Co., IN, son of James Clegg 1771 who was born in Ireland to Thomas & Mary Clegg. The other two Alexanders in my data files are James' brother Alexander Jr. born abt 1769 in Ireland, and Alexander Clegg born 1813 (perhaps WV?) who was the son of Thomas Clegg, Jr. and Keziah Hubbs.

Teresia, I finally retrieved my boxes of genealogy stuff. The book "The Cleggs of Old Chatham" published by- The Clegg Family Association in 1977. Alexander Clegg is mentioned on page 392 Born in Ireland about 1743. He had a son Alexander who settled in Wahington County, Penn. I could send you a copy of the page if you like. The second book is " Baird's History of Clark County Indiana" & it is about my lineage thru Mathew Clegg Born 1810 (1790) & there is no Alexander on my side. I hope this helps you. Bette
