Dear Garry
Thankyou for replying to my message on the message board, I was not sure how to contact you.
I have been searching for my Clegg ancestors for over 2 years without any luck until I came upon your family tree on Rootsweb.com and found them.
The John Clegg born in 1889 in Bartley Lancashire was my Grandfather, he died in 1959. He was married to Alice Huddleston (now deceased) and they had 5 children Gladys, Walter, Ivy (deceased) Mabel (deceased) and John. My father is Walter Clegg, he was born in 1924 and is still alive he is 82. I have one brother William Clegg who has 2 sons Daniel and Andrew Clegg. . They all still live in Lancashire around the Longridge area. I live in Scotland on the Isle of Mull. I have three children, Matthew, Michael and Naomi
My father knows the history of the more recent Cleggs from his fathers family but did not know about his grandfather Richard Clegg who was brother to your John Clegg who emigrated to Canada. He only knew that he had a farm at Woodplumpton.
I am going to add to my family tree on the genes united website and include the ancestors you have.
How did you find about about the William Clegg and Mary Farrer married at Orton in Westmorland? They must have moved from Westmorland to Lancashire in the 1830's I have tried to research that first William Clegg but cannot find anything, Farrer seems to be a popular name around Westmorland.
I am very pleased to have found this information for my fathers sake it was something I wanted to do for him. I look forward to hearing from you again and if you want any information about the Clegg line here in the uk Im sure I can help.(well with the more recent ones)
kind regards
Hylda

sorry about that I do get confused when names are the same or similar.
If I have understood it right I think you may be talking about William Clegg (14/12/1817) who was the brother of Joseph Clegg (9/5/1819) who was my GG
grandfather and married to Betty Berry (1823) and William and Joseph fathers name (our GGG grandfather ?) was John Clegg born 1793-5 who was married to Hannah Crompton born 1789-91.
Is this the right William who had Richard.
Do you have an email address I can send rest of info to you on.
Thanks

Hi David, Thankyou for your reply, Richard was born in 1846 and was son of William Clegg who was married to Margaret Hodgkinson. I think Richard was your John Cleggs brother. If you see Garry Virgins family tree here on Roots web you will see the Clegg line back to William Clegg and Mary Farrer in the early 1800s they were the parents of William Clegg born 1814 in Orton Westmorland.
I can help you with the more recent Clegg ancesters.

The October 1977 issue of the Tri-County Researcher has a listing of the children of Thomas Clegg Jr. (born Dec 1782 in Ireland, d. 4 Jan 1871 Marshall County, WV) who married Koziah Hubbs (b. 18 Mar 1786, d. 18 Aug 1822; daughter of Elijah & Sarah Hubbs). Thomas then married Koziah's sister Rebecca (born 20 March 1788 d. 1 Oct 1854). There were 9 children of the first marriage and 3 from the second.
One of the daughters of the 1st marriage was Rebecca Clegg b. 28 March 1819, died in Blue Hill, Nebraska.
When I read about her marriage, I decided to post it here because it's such a cute story:
"Rebecca married Jotham Martin on 12 March 1842. This marriage was one of romantic beginning since they eloped to Pennsylvania because her father did not approve of Jotham. At one time, it is said, her father ordered him from the house with the remark, 'take the door'. Jotham rose and advanced to the door, raising it from its wooden hinges and walked off with it over his shoulders. Mr. Clegg followed demanding 'Bring back that door you durned villain!' He returned the door and took Rebecca, they were only nine miles from the state of Pennsylvania.
They made their home in Marshall County until they too removed to Illinois and later to Nebraska. Both were still living as of 1899."
I was surprised to see emails on the list concerning a Richard
Clegg, but there is probably no relationship involved with the above
persons; since I presume the above Cleggs came from Ireland. I do know
for certain that the above Cleggs are buried in a very small cemetery in
Henryville, Clark County, Indiana. I have visited the site and taken
pictures of the markers of Richard and Mary (Simpson) Clegg.
These are the Cleggs from which Col. Harland Sanders, of Kentucky
Fried Chicken, is descended.
I have a copy of the book CLEGGS of the Upper Ohio Valley by Blaine
L. Clegg, and know something of the genealogy of various members of the
family, but if anyone has definite proof of Richard's ancestry, I would
certainly appreciate hearing from you.
