As we dicussed by email, a possible father for Arthur Assheton of Rochdale, and later Clegg Hall, is William Assheton. This William is the only Assheton appearing in the tax list of 1523 for Roachdale (History of Rochdale). In 1541 Arthur Assheton was the only Assheton listed for Rochdale. This William could well have been the William who was Vicar of Rochdale from 1482 until 1522. Sir Ralph Assheton of Middleton had a son William who could have been born as late as 1461 as Ralph had 12 chlidren listed in the Vistiation of Lancaster. Could this be the William of Roachdale. Arthur's son and heir was named William.
