Dear M. JCrissmon,
Thank you for your kind and thorough response. I have read William Owen's book and recalled most of the information to which you referred. I did not recall the information about his involvement in the "Minute Men of the Frontier"
I am more specifically interested in knowing if James and Hannah had any children, and if so more specifics about them.
I am from the line of John Cleaver, b. abt. 1800-1810, found in western TN. (Carroll County and Henry County, TN) in early 1840's.
John's oldest son also was named James. (possibly named for John's father?)
Also found in this same area and time is George Cleaver. possibly a brother or cousin to John?
If James Cleaver, son of William, was in this area as part of the "minute men of the frontier" Then he and Hannah may have had children in the area???
Do you know of any documentation regarding James Cleaver's service and/or family other than that listed in Mr Owens book.
Thanks,
Terry Cleaver

James Cleaver is listed on pages 140, 155-156, and 178 of William Owens book A Fair and Happy Land. He was about 8 years old when he was taken to Kentucky, about 12 at the end of the American Revolution. Still at a young age he married Hannah Linn on 26 Dec 1789 in Nelson County. She was the daughter of Nathan Linn who was killed by Indians and Hannah Welch whose second husband was Ozias. The ceremony was performed by B. Linn, her uncle, and a Baptist preacher, and James Adams of Nelson County signed for security. According to family tradition he migrated to Alabama in 1792, but records show a much later date. Page 140.
He was the son of William Cleaver Sr. Some of his siblings were Joshua Cleaver born after 1779, Benjamin Cleaver, William Cleaver Jr. who married Susannah Westfall in 1790 in Jefferson County, Stephen Cleaver, David Cleaver born aft 1766 but before 1768 probably in Virginia he married Letitia Griffey, and he had a sister Sarah Cleaver.
On page 155-156 James Cleaver was fined 10 shillings for profanity. He left Ohio County and may have left Kentucky as well, for his name appears on early records in Missouri Territory. Page 178 in a section called "Missouri"...Apparently James and Hannah Cleaver were among the settlers recruited by Daniel Boone. Records show he served in Captain Daniel Morgan Boone's Company from 13 June 1813 to 25 May 1814. This was a territorial troop of rangers sometimes called the "minute men of the frontier". They patrolled settlements from the Salt River on the Mississippi to Loutre Island in Missouri.
The is more information about Hannah Linn's family in this book.
