John W. Cleaver, b. c. 1787, d. ca. 1860, first appears in Hardy County, VA records in the 1820 federal census, but does not appear in their land records until October 1847, when he purchased land from Charles Carter Lee and his wife, Lucy. However, the property description for this 25 acre tract mentions boundaries that adjoin "Cleaver's own land." Since this was Cleaver's first recorded purchase, it would suggest that Cleaver had received land by inheritance, previous to this purchase. No early Cleaver wills are recorded in the will books at Hardy County Court House. Does anyone know who John W. Cleaver's father was?
A William Cleaver's apparisal and estate settlement from 1789 is listed in Johnstown's "W.Va. Estate Settlements," (p. 6) for Hampshire Co. At this time, John would have only been about two years old. Sage and Jones' book references an 1793 deed from heirs of Ezekiel Cleaver (of Montgomery Co.) to Peter Cleaver (of Berkeley Co.), for 88 acres of land on Bear Garden Ridge in Hampshire County, put Peter then sold this land to David Shinn of Berkeley. Does anyone know if either of these men are connected to John W. Cleaver, of Hardy County?
Any help anyone can give me on the parentage of John W. Cleaver would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration in reading this query.

My ancestry on the Cleaver side moved into Calloway County just prior to the Civil War. In fact my Great Great Grandfather was supposed to have fought in the War and lost his life. His name was Wesley Washington Cleaver who was born in Tenessee on Oct 12, 1829 and died July 22, 1861. He was married to Kathrine A. Trevathan who was the daughter of Jonas Trevathan and Kitty Rose. Kathrine was born November 25, 1928 in North Carolina. They were married in Lewisberg, TN April 6, 1854. According to a pocket card in Murray State University Library, Wesley was detached in retreat and never returned.
Their children were William Layfayette Cleaver, my Great Grandfather, born 9/30/1855 in Calloway County and Died December 4, 1921., He married Nancy E. Boggess who was born in Kentucky. To this union was born my Grandfahter William Hicks Cleaver, born 9/20/1885 in Calloway Co, and died 4/4/1961 in Calloway County. He married Cora Ann Pritchet. They are both buried in Stewart Cemetery, Calloway Co., KY. Their other child was Lucy Ann Cleaver married Simon Miller.
After the Death of Nancy E., William Lafayette married Mellisa Pace.
William Hicks Cleaver and Cora Ann had Five Children, Ralph, Garvin, Printhia, June, and Clifford. June and Clifford died at a young age. Ralph was my father.
My son found a record of a John and Martha Cleaver from Henry County Tennesse and believes that Wesley Washington could be their son, however, I have not yet confirmed this.
Would be happy to hear from anyone who has information that would link to this family and would definitely be willing to share any information I have with you.
