Hi, Donna! I think we may have corresponded before? But if we haven't, and
you would like a complimentary copy of the newsletter, just let me know.
As for your questions, my opinion is that it's hard to define any certain
time that the spelling of Cleveland changed. Some cousins still retain the
CLEAVELAND spelling. I think it was a personal preference along the way
before proper spelling was such an issue in legal documents? In my research,
I have seen that extra A dropped for a generation or two, and then it
suddenly reappears. Sometimes the spelling will vary for the same
Cle(a)veland ancestor. I always check the database for both spellings if I
am looking for someone.
Mary Ann Frazier Ray Cleveland Wright was my great-grandmother, otherwise
known as *Aunt Mainie* to people who knew her. My great-grandfather,
Lewallen Gilliam Cleveland was her second husband, and she was his fifth
wife. Follwing Lewallen's death, she married a Burl Wright. Her tombstone
has her listed as Wright, though she is buring among some of her sons.
Lewallen is in the same cemetery, but in an older section of it. I have
these notes on her in the database: Married previously to Franklin Ray--one
daughter, Frances Isabella Ray.
Married a third time after Lewallen's death, to Burl H. Wright, 11 Mar 1900.
Daughter of James Jackson and Isabelle Frazier. Of Cherokee descent through
her mother. Married to Lewallen by John P. Dewitt, Baptist minister. Her
third husband, Burl H. Wright, b. 22 Oct 1829, d. 10 Dec 1906, buried in
Bentonville Cemetery, Bentonville, AR (Section 5). Burl's 1st wife, Ann, b.
3 Jul 1824, d. 21 Aug 1899.
Her daughter (Frances) by her first husband married Lewallen's son (William)
by his wife. Here is my note on William Lodowich Cleveland: Married to his
step-sister, Frances "Frannie" Isabelle Ray, daughter of Franklin and Mary
Ann Frazier Ray. Mary Ann would become Lewallen's fifth wife. "Billy" and
"Frannie" married by A.M.T. Zook, minister. Farmer. Lived near White Rock
(Jane), MO, for number of years. Owned and operated carpenter shop and made
chairs. After his wife's death, he sold his farm and w/his children went to
OK. Suffered from stomach trouble and was for over a year bedfast at home
of his daughter, Mrs. Emma Bond of Alex, OK.
I hope this helps you a little. Good luck with your research.
Love and blessings,
Vikki

All I know Terry is my gggrandfather, Andrew J Cleveland (1820 TN and 1897
Saline Co, IL) was a Cleveland until around 1860 when he changed to
Cleavelin. Some of his sons went with that spelling and the rest stayed with
Cleveland. Great grandfather, William Riley stayed with Cleveland as did all
of his sone except for my grandfather John L. Cleavelin .
Why all of this ? I have no idea.

First, I'd like to ask if anyone knows where or when people varied the
spelling of the last name, "Cleveland" or "Cleaveland"? Was it a certain
time, generation, location, or family? Just curious...
Next, does anyone have information on the parents (Franklin and Mary
Ann Ray-1836-1929) of Frances Ray, who married William Lodowich Cleveland?
Mary Ann's stone says "Wright" on it, a husband that she married after
Franklin Ray and L. G. Cleveland.
Any information is appreciated! Donna

I've had my set of the C* Genealogy books for a long time now. I was so
tickled to find out that you can buy photocopies of it, as I knew that even
if I found a set of the original books for sale, the price would be
prohibitive. And these do just as well.
If anyone with Clevelands in their tree (it's my maiden name) can get the
set, I'd urge them to go for it!
Barbara Cleveland Cofer
I've had an inquiry on price. There was an offer in the December 1999
Cleveland Family Chronicals, offering a special on the set, $65/volume +
$9 shipping = $204. You can contact Higginson by e-mail,
HIGGINSN(a)COVE.COM, attn: George, or by phone at 978-745-7170, and see if
they're still offering that price.

I e-mailed with George previously, and he told me that they would honor the
old price for CFCRS members and those who mentioned Cleveland Family Forum
from the CFCRS website. Of course, that e-mail exchange took place last
summer, but it's worth a try. :)

Hi, Janet!
Thanks so much for the scanned copy of the letter from Martin Van Buren
Cleveland to his mother, Isabella Elizabeth *Eba* Morris Cleveland! It's so
much fun getting these peeks into the everyday lives of our ancestors.
Martin was the brother of my great-grandfather, Lewallen Gilliam Cleveland.
*Jim Polk* would probably be Martin's younger brother, James K. Polk
Cleveland. *Polly and Joe* could possibly be Martin's sister Mary Ann
(*Polly*) and her husband Joseph Allen. *Eliza and Jasper* would probably be
Martin's sister Eliza and brother William Jasper.
The baby *Bony* would have been Martin's firstborn, a son named Bonaparte.
The pretty girl they called *Emily* is probably his second-born, whom I have
listed as Emma, so I wonder which was the nickname? Bony was born in 1859,
Emma in 1860~~so that would place the letter in the early 1860s?
I hope this fills in some of the blanks for you?
Thanks again for the scan!
Love and blessings,
Vikki

Rusty, The Cleveland Genealogy, has your entire line traced back to the
original Northern immigrant Cleveland, Moses in 1635. All of your ancestors,
their spouses and children are listed. The line goes like this:
Moses > Aaron> Benjamin > Moses > Dyer or Obediah > James > Samuel Ainslee
born Mar. 4, 1835-36, m. Jane Parker (a second cousin on his mother's side)
Apr. 29, 1855. See if you can get a hold of the Cleveland Genealogy by
Edmund Janes Cleveland and Horace Gillette Cleveland , pub 1899. It may be
in a library or you might find it on the net if you search antique books.
E-mail if you need more info.
Best regards, Tom Fitzgerald, Staten Island, NY
I am following my family tree and need some help in finding my great,
great, great grandfathers name. I can go back as far as Samuel Ansley
Cleveland, born 4 March, 1836 in Castalia, Ohio. Married Jane Parker on
29 April, 1855 in Bradford, Iowa. He died on 19 January, 1919 in Nashua,
Iowa. He is buried in Oak Hill cemetery in Nashua. He owned a mill and
farmed in that area. They had 9 or 10 children, Esther, Sylvia, James
(my great grandfather), Phoebe, Betty, Alice ( who died of Diptheria at
age 7 in 1880), Clarence, Luther, Earnest and I think also a son named
George Franklin. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with
information or anyone who may need information on tracing their family
tree. Thank you very much and this is truly a wonderful site.....~rusty

I'm trying to find out how I'm related to Grover Cleaveland. I just
found a picture with my grandmother's writing on the back that
says "Grandpa Cleaveland & Ruth Talis". The picture is not of
Grover, but possibly a brother.
Please respond when you have a chance so this mystery can be
solved.
