I am seeking info on my father's family, from Chatham - Cedar Springs area
of Ontario.
He was William Kenneth Cleaveland, born 29 Dec 1933 in Chatham, Ontario. He
had sisters: Edith Joan (married name: Turner) , Lourella Mary (married
name: Osterhaudt), Anne Marie (married name: Sofranyos), Betty Jeane, Nancy
Lynn, Charlene Louise, and Lyla Katherine (believe married to a Platanov).
His parents were George William Cleaveland, born 17 Mar 1914 in Cedar
Springs, Ontario, and Alice Luella Lovell, born 5 Jan 1913 in Utica, Michigan.
I have some information which I cannot yet verify from second sources:
George William Cleaveland appears to have had several brothers: Carl
Sylvester, Earl Grover, and Roy Kenneth.
George William Cleaveland's parents appear to be George Edward Cleaveland
and Margaret Ann Lancaster.
George William's parents appear to be James Cleaveland and Catherine Maynard.
I realize the spelling of the Cleaveland name may vary from generation to
generation, and even some of my aunts have taken to writing their maiden
name as Cleveland.
I have no verifiable information beyond that, meaning two or more
independent sources. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
To: Mildred and All:
Don't give up!! I have been on this list for over a year. I just kept
downloading the messages to a disk since I didn't have a clue, but I knew I
belonged somewhere in the Cleveland line, somehow related to S. Grover
Cleveland. The other day, on another board, I found out my G-G-Grandmothers
first name....Mary Elizabeth....I already knew it was Cleveland, and in a
most casual maner I posted the new info and asked if anyone knew of this
person with her husbands name....the same day I got three or four very
detailed messages that took me back several generations all at once!!! What
a thrill!! Now I am going thru those long ago messages, looking for
relatives!! We don't always get this lucky, but when you are on a great
board like this, I can just about bet you will find your link, just keep
searching, have patience, and don't dismiss any clue, no matter how small!

Mildred,
If I may make a couple of suggestions. I had saved your original message, so I
pulled it out & took a look. You asked about Hester Anne Ceveland [sic] born
in 1873, in Missouri. I am guessing that is a typo, but I learned a long time
ago, to ask about such things. Try looking for your Grandfather first.
Documentation for women is less than good, especially if someone was married
and died young. The LDS is a good starting point, so are town records. Try a
search for your Grandfather in Missouri records, GEDCOM may be able to point
you in the right direction, so might rootsweb.
Good Luck,
Ed Cleaveland

Sound methodology of research is to work back in time. Thus, start with
the 1920 US Census and work back through each census (never skip one
because the questions are different each time.) Then, collect the death
records, marriage records and birth records, in that order.

Since I subscribed to this list the only message I have received was a
welcome to the list. The rest have come without a mesage attached. I am new
on a computer and of course to the web and I have no idea what my problem
is.
My grandmother's maiden name was Hester Ann Ceveland born in 1873 in
Missouri, according to census records her parents were born there. I believe
her father's name was William and she had brothers named Riley and George.
Her father apparently died when she was very young because her mother was
married again and perhaps more than once. I didn't start my search until
after my grandmothers death and though my mother helped me as much as she
could I don't have much to go on. Names my mother mentioned were Potts (I
believe that may have been the grandmothers maiden name, also Bias and
Bivens.
Please does anyone have a clue where I could start? Thanks, Mildred Wilson.

You didn't specify the dates for your Goodwins. I find no entry in the
index of the 1899 Cleveland and Cleaveland genealogy for an Edwin E. Goodwin.
If you can provide names and event dates for people back in the 1860's or
earlier I may find a hit in the index.
I'll copy this to the Cleaveland mailing list so you may hear from others.
Mailing list people: his address is Sfturvey(a)aol.com in case it doesn't
come through in the header.

arly settlers in the Town of German taken from
"1784 History of Chenango & Madison Counties, NY"
by James H Smith; pub. 1880. Tried to use year, where
stated, person and where they were from.
GERMAN was formed from DeRuyter March 21, 1806. Tract
of land embraced in the town of German was patented to
John W. WATKINS June 14, 1793. It is the southern portion
of the Gore, and was originally named Brakel Township.
Otselic was taken off March 28,1817, Lincklaen, April 12, 1823;
and the southern part of Pitcher, Feb. 13, 1827.
First settler: Conflict of authority: Franch's Gazetteer says first
settler was 1795 by
Benjamin CLEVELAND;
while Elias Livermore is positive that his grandfather,
Abraham LIVERMORE, came in 1796. Abraham Livermore's tombstone
says: "He was the first settler in the town of German
in 1796."
1796-
Abraham LIVERMORE, native of Pelham, Mass; 1795 emigrated to
western wilderness
1797-
Benjamin CELVELAND, from Oneida co.; left German after a
few years
Very few settlements made in present town for several years after these
two families came.
about 1800-
Michael MEAD; moved to locality of Cayuga Lake
John BALDWIN
about 1812-Capt. LAWRENCE; moved after 10 years
If anyone has any questions, I'll do my best to answer.
This listing does NOT include names of later settlers in town
at the time of publication nor the names of children and families.

Well, at least I have something.....
according to the Mormon Online site......
My G-g-grandmother, Clarissa Elizabeth Cardinal's parents names were Mary
Elizabeth Cleveland and Francis Xavier Cardinal. All I knew before was
Cleveland, supposedly, related to President Grover Cleveland, and Francis
Cardinal, with French roots, family rumor says a french count or his father
was.
I have no dates for either, but Clarissa was born Aug 13, 1842. Does anyone
have Mary in their tree? Any info would be a great help!

"Why waste your money looking up your family tree? Just go into

Hi folks,
Can anyone help me with making the connection from John Cleveland b: Feb 28,
1734/35 in Upper Coos, Colebrook, New Hampshire? He died in 1818 in the
same place. I'd really like to know who his parents were and the link to
England if at all possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Fred
