Dear Teresa Parrish,
We are from the same family of Cunninghams and Clevelands. I believe my
Grandmother, Delia Cunningham Reynolds and Neal were brother and sister. I
am not sure, but I think we may have corresponed by letter at one time. I
knew Hazel Butler and have in the past attended the Cunningham reunion. It
was good to see something from this line on the web. Let me hear from you.
I will be out of pocket for a couple of weeks starting Tuesday. If I hear
from you before that, I will answer before I leave. If not when I return, I
will answer.
Your cousin,
Mayme Burke
mburke(a)freewwweb.com
I see that several postings to Ancestry.com have indicated knowledge of the
parents of Moses Cleveland of Ipswich as being Isaac Cleveland and
Alice. Last I heard although this was a possibility there was no proof.
I would like to hear from serious researchers on this subject. At the
moment I am leaning toward the statement in the 1899 genealogy that says
"The English ancestry of the Cleveland immigrants to America is not yet
definitely settled."
Dick
Forwarded in the hope someone can help,
Kathy

I'm from the Texas line of Cleveland/Cleaveland. It seems everyone that
needs help is from the east or mid-west. That is why I haven't responded
before. Perhaps if I share what I have of the Texas branch someone may
recognize a name or something. I have no idea why it seems this branch is
sort of got lost or rather 'out-of-pocket'. I know we go back to Moses and
have our lineage thanks to a Cunningham cousin of my paternal grandmother's.
Our line, in brief, from Moses and Ann Winn Cleveland is thus: their son
Aaron who married Dorcas Wilson; their son Aaron, Jr. who married Abigail
Waters; their son Josiah who married Joanna Porter; their son Josiah, Jr.
who married Ruth Johnson; their son Aaron P. who married Pamelia (or Pamala)
Warren; their son Horatio J. who married Cynthia Carley; their dau. Sally
Maria who married Michael Lee Bolton; their dau. Lucinda Jane who married
the 2nd time to widower James Cunningham; their son Cornelius M. 'Neal' who
married Mineola 'Ola' Brown; their dau. Hazel Orlena who married Claud C.
'Bill' Butler; their son Claude K. who married Gertie B. La France....of
whom I am the oldest of their 3 children. Whew!
Now, I guesstimate Horatio J. Cleveland's family came to Texas around the
mid-1840s as the info. I have says his & Cynthia's last child, Friend
William, was born in Rancine Co., Wisc. in July of 1840. This is
contradicted in the Tex. 1850 census that you'll see later. There are other
Cleveland/Cleaveland's listed that I have no other info. about as they did
not pertain to my line but I offer them to you in case they are one of the
many lost Cleveland/Cleavelands that are being sought.
In the Poll Lists for Texas 1846 H.J. Cleveland shows up in Colorado Co.
The Henry that shows up in Fayette Co., is either Horatio's brother or could
be his son, which I'm inclined to believe the latter. Henry, Horatio's son,
married Wilmouth Fitzgerald. Fayette Co. is 'next door' to Colorado Co. I
haven't yet really checked on this so I won't be firm as to which Henry this
is. Also showing up, in case any one is looking for these folks, in the 1846
Texas Poll Lists is Alfred Cleveland of Brazos Co.; Charles L. Cleveland of
Brazoria Co.; J. A. H. Cleveland of Galveston Co.; W.H. Cleveland of
Washington Co.
I have only a partial list of those with the 'A' as at the time I copied
from the book only what I needed...James M. Cleaveland of Washington Co.;
Solomon Cleaveland of of Austin Co. This is interesting. Solomon is
Horatio's son yet they spell the surname differently!
Early Texas marriages up to 1850 show Clevelands with the 'A' spelling. But
have a few without the 'A'...Anne W. Cleveland marr. Edward T. Branch 27 Aug
1838 in Brazoria Co.; Emaline P. Cleveland marr. Zadock B. Buckholts 3 Nov
1850 in Fayette Co.; Henry P. Cleveland marr. Wilmouth Fitzgerald 14 Jan
1844 in Fayette Co., J.A.H. Cleveland marr. Mary D. Millican 14 Dec 1834 in
Brazoria Co.; Lucinda Cleveland marr. Erastus Clark 24 Mar 1844 in Gonzales
Co.; Lucy Cleveland marr. J.R. Martin 31 Jan 1845 in Galveston Co.; Mariah
(missp) Cleveland marr. Michael L. Bolton 19 Apr 1842 in Jackson Co.; Martha
C. Cleveland marr. John M. Steward 20 Nov 1839 in Brazoria Co.
The above Emaline, Henry P., Lucinda, and Maria (not Mariah) are children of
Horatio J. and Cynthia Carley Cleveland.
The only census info. I have to date is for Colorado Co., Texas 1850...
#60 Farmer ($200)
Horatio J. CLEVELAND 63 m Unkn
Cynthia 54 f Ny
Emeline 18 f Ny
Cynthia 18 f "
William 10 m Tex
This contradicts prev. info. I have indicating William was born in Rancine
Co., Wisc. The yr. of birth 1840 is correct but I am unsure of where. No
doubt that Cynthia knew where she birthed her kids. Horatio's birthplace may
show up here as Unkn. but info. I have says he was born at Harper's Ferry,
Md. Perhaps he forgot over time.
I have been winded I know, but perhaps I have answered an unasked question
or two. And perhaps some one out there know more about why some came to
Texas where they seemed to haved faded into oblivion. It was common for a
time for folks dodging creditors, who were wanted by the law, those who
may've been sought by a wronged gal's parents, wanted to start fresh for
whatever reason, and perhaps more reasons than I can imagine, to leave a
mark...GTT...(Gone to Texas) or perhaps not but left GTT anyway. Perhaps
this is what these branches of the family did...went GTT to start
fresh...for whatever reason.
Hope I've helped someone....Teresa Parrish

George,
First, change your posting address so that the "request" is no
longer there. The "request" addition to the address is only for
subscribing and unsubscribing.
Next. The Cleveland/Cleaveland family is VERY extensive. We
will need to have an idea of what line you come through, names,
dates and place names.
There are some really super people on this list, more than willing to
help others out. Please repost the message for your family info
and an idea of what you are looking for.
Good hunting
Teri

After lurking for some time, I was persuaded by our list moderator¹s
recent plea to join in for the first time. Though I seriously doubt any
of you are working on the same line, one never knows.
About 25 years ago I got the basic line from the well-known 3 volume
Genealogy of the Cleveland and Cleaveland Families published in 1899. Two
years ago I began pursuing more details and verification of the line.
I¹ll give just the basics from Moses to my ggg-grandfather, Enoch. The
surname has always been spelled Cleveland. Identifying numbers from the 3
volume work are used.

Edward #8 & Deliverance Palmer
Deliverance #52 & Mary (no surname)
Enoch #188 & Deboran Fassett
Solomon #535 & Martha Rathbone

Comments
Due to my parents early separation I was raised by my mother and had
almost no contact with my father or his side of the family and have lost
contact with surviving cousins and their descendants.
I would like to know more about any of these people, and their lines as
well. I am particularly interested in my great-grandfather William
Averill, reputed to have lived to 103 and died in or near Spokane, Wash.
It would also be nice to know when these Clevelands located to Wisconsin,
and of course many other things ;-). It seems I will have to travel to
Washington, New York and New England, and probably to Wisconsin again to
find out more. Frankly, the internet has been intriguing, but not very
helpful.
Cheers,
