Could anyone tell me who wrote the Cleaveland Genealogy Books that were
printed in the late 1800's? I am interested in the authors, where they were
from, and how they fit into the Cleaveland line. Thanks in advance.

Hello all!,
I have been getting a large number of bounced mail messages lately.
IF you are planning on shutting down or changing your email address
or anything of this sort, PLEASE, PLEASE unsub from the list first
then re-sub with the new address or whenever you get back from
vacation.
A note here, I believe that most ISP only allow you a ceratin amount
of room for storing email. If you get more than that amount, your
mail box will jam and mail will bounce. This may be happening with
some vacationers.
As a special note, we will be leaving for three weeks next Monday,
however we are taking the laptop and are contacting a local service
so that we can maintain our lists and websites, so it should be
business as usual.

Hi to Marjorie.
Re. the Motto Pro Deo Et Patria , it means "For God and Counry". That
is also the motto onmy coat of arms with the same description you
quoted. Semel et Semper means "once and Always". Vincit Amor Patriae
means "Love of
Country Conquers"My grandmother was Elizabeth Alice Cleveland Click.
Her line is through Moses Cleveland's son Samuel. We are from the
northern line, Indiana and Michgan. If I can possibly help anyone , feel
free to ask.

A few years ago when I was visiting MA I visited a museum I believe in Salem
(had a genealogy society across the street -- but closed on weekend). I
remember seeing a 'snuff box' which belonged to Lucy (Fitch) Cleveland and a
painting of Henry Cleveland. I always wanted to write to see who donated
them.
Has anyone else seen them? Does anyone live close?

Hi,
I have a copy of the first page of a map that was given to the Woburn, MA,
public library by Edmund James Cleveland of Elizabeth, N.J. on Sept 1, 1882,
that has a few paragraphs about the history of the name and a crest.
It says the coat of arms is "Per chevron, sable and ermine, a chevron
engrailed, counter-changed" It says the crest is "A demi-old man habited,
azure, having on his head a cap, gules, turned up with fur, holding in his
dester hand a spear, proper, having from the blade a golden cord passing
behind and coiled in the left hand."
The motto on the coat of arms is "PRO DEO ET PATRIA"....it also states the
other motters are "Semel et Semper" and "Vincit Amor Patria".
Hope this helps. If anyone knows what PRO DEO ET PATRIA means I'd sure like
to know.....or else I'll have to brush up on my Latin.
Marjorie
Hugh, that's the same motto that both my grandfather and my father had on
their rings, which they always wore. Both were buried with them, although my
father's had become so worn (very soft gold) that you could barely make it
out. He had another one made, and since my mother died (10 years after Daddy)
I have his original one. The "Pro Deo et Patria" can just barely be read, but
at least I know it's there.
In the Cleveland/Cleaveland Geneology 3 vol. set, pg 1508, # 5684, there's an
Emma Cleveland (Bartholomew 6, Isaac 5, Lemuel 4, Isaac 3, Edward 2, Moses 1)
who married Frederick GASS of Hampton (2nd marr), no children.
That's the only GASS connection that I could find.
I hope this helps a bit.

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for the info. Pieces are starting to fit together.
The following is my line according to the 1899 Genealogy.
1 - - - - - Moses or Moyses
8 - - - - - Edward
56 - - - - - Isaac
206 - - - - - Lemuel
* 580 - - - - - Isaac --- (Bartholemew)
1842 - - - - - Isaac
5685 - - - - - - - Isabel/Doherty - my grandfathers parents
5686 - - - - - - - Charlotte/Davison - my grandmothers parents
If you check Cleaveland-D V98 #63 (also see #55), You will
see that your Bartholemew is a younger brother of my Isaac
(1799-1864). You will also note that the youngest of Isaac's family,
No.13, was named Emma, b.1850, so the name comtinued.
So it looks like your "Bart" is my 2nd gg Uncle and you and I
are either 4th Cousins or 3rd Cousins, once removed, depending on
your age. I'm 72.
Well this gives you all the info I have, and now I know where
the Gass came from. :-) I hope it makes sense, I've not done a lot
cut and paste. Hope to hear more. Will attempt to answer any questions.
Regards, Hugh.

Thanks for your answer. It is interesting in the fact
that my copy of the CLEVELAND crest has a differant Motto.
"PRO DEO ET PATRIA"
Other than that, they are the same. Will have to look it up
next time I go to the library.
Still would like to know when this coupling took place
and any info connected there to?

"Plan To Go, in 2 Triple 0" ;-)
In my Cleveland "file", I have a double "Coat of Arms".
I remember it hanging on my Grand Parents front room wall when I was
very young. I'm going back to the late 1930's. Somewhere I even
have an old photo taken in that room and it shows in the background.
It was hand painted on a piece of glass. It was mailed to me but it
arrived smashed. I painted a copy of it on a piece of paper.
The GASS Crest is on the left, black background with a
wavey diagonal cross of white, a white dot in each of the
four quarters. Surmounted by a brown arm held aloft, holding
a gold battle axe. Motto below, "TAM, ARTE, QUAM, MARTE"
The Cleveland Crest on the right.
Hope my "Heraldic description" :-) is clear enough.
Does this fit in any known nitch? There is no one left whom I
can ask about it and it doesn't appear in the Cleveland genealogy
that I have. Regards, Hugh.
