My research indicates that Moses Cleaveland was b. 2 February, 1619/20 in Ipswich,
Suffolk, England & d. 9 Janua, 1700/01 in Woburn, Middlesex, Mass.. He married
Ann Winn 26 September, 1648 in Woburn. She was the daughter of Edward Winn and
Joanna Hatch.
Moses grandparents were Richard(1) and Alice Cleaveland.
Their children were:
Issac Cleaveland(2) b. 1 January, 1583/84 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, d. 3
June 1626
St.Stephens Parish, Ipswich, England & Alice was the wife of Issac.
Arron(2) b. unknown
So the line goes Moses(3), Issac(2), & Richard(1)

There are many other sources, but these should be sufficient. For the Cleaveland
line alone, I have close to 50 citations.

Its been a while since I checked to see if there were any other Cleveland
researchers out there researching William Cleveland born Aug. 22, 1817 and
his wife Delight Palmer born about 1819 in Ohio and their descendants. I
have through this list obtained a lot of information on William's ancestry,
but have virtually nothing on his wife's lineage. I would be very
interested in obtaining information on her ancestry.
I found William Cleveland and Delight Palmer Cleveland listed on the 1850
Census for the Town of Walnut, Bureau County, Ill. At the time they had
four children: Louis (also shows up as Lewis later) 11 yrs., John 8yrs.,
Mary 4yrs., and Clark 3yrs (my great grandfather). By about 1868, according
to the Cleveland books discussed here recently, they were in San Felipe,
California. Two other children William Cleveland and Sarah Cleveland were
also mentioned in the book.
I do have information to share on the descendants of William and Delight
Palmer Cleveland, and would love to exchange data on this line with others
researching it.

What is the general consensus on the ancestors of the original Moses Cleveland
who lived in Woburn, MA the 1600s? I have seen several different parents and
grandparents listed for him in different places. I would like to add this to
my family tree but I don't know which info is correct or at least the most
likely to be accurate. Any and all responses would be appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Descendants of Arlie E. Cleveland
Generation No. 1
1. Arlie E.1 Cleveland was born October 25, 1870, and died 1953 in Fort
Scott, Kansas. He married Julia Emmory Otey September 24, 1891 in
Carrollton, Carroll Co., Missouri, daughter of Virginius Otey and Mary
Herndon.
Notes for Arlie E. Cleveland:
Notes by his grandson Harold W. Cleveland:
Grandad had been a playboy in his youth and I suppose he never entirely
recovered.(The last time I saw him he was in his 90's and still enjoyed a
good time.) His father had owned THE Livery Stable in Carrollton, Missouri.
This might compare roughly to owning the only rental car service at Lambert
Field in St. Louis in the 90's.He was always wonderful in my eyes - even
after I was old enough to realize that he was pretty much of a reprobate
(but what a loveable reprobate). I recall our time together in his hotel
room in Hannibal when both of us
had come for my dad's funeral. I was a shiny new Ensign, and as soon as we
got to his room the old man asked me, with a twinkle in his eye; (he always
had a twinkle in his eye) "Boy, have you learned to take a drink yet?" I
had, and we did! I used to wonder when I was small why grandad would always
invite dad out to the barn to "show him something" as soon as we would
arrive for a visit. Later I found out that the old rascal had put more
energy into his grape arbor than into his corn crop. There was always a
batch of grape juice on its way to becoming wine, and what wine it was!
Grandad was the extrovert of the family. He always enjoyed people and a good
time, and was always on the lookout for the latter - the former gravitated
to him naturally. This, according to one Farrin Moore of Hale, Missouri. one
contempory with my dad. "Despite the age difference, when the boys (dad's
age) wanted to go down to the river for a few days, or sit in a duck blind
for a weekend, they always invited Arlie (grandad). Harold was alright, but
Arlie was more fun to be with".
Notes reported by his grandaughter Barbara Schweppe Hanes:
"Because Grandpa lived with us all of my life, I never had a baby sitter
other than he or Kay.(her brother John K). I learned to play all kinds of
card games, I received a lot of love from him and adored him. He loved to
read magazines and I alweays walked to town with him to get the Saturday
Evening Post. Life, Colliers and others. He also took me to see all the
Disney films after Kay went in the Army. He loved radio and the shows on it.
On Kentucky Derby Day, no one bothered him. He did drink, but mother (Vera
Cleveland Schweppe) never really said this. Grandpa used to go in the
taverns in downtown Fort Scott and when he received Welfare, she was really
upset. She did look after him with clothes and attention. He died in a
nursing home in 1955 in the next block from our house during my college
years in California. Mother had his body returned to Missouri. Grandpa had a
brother Burt Cleveland who was born in Missouri and died in Bozman, Montana.
Somehow I remember Grandpa had gone west to either Oregon or Hawaii at one
time. He loved books about the West and Mysteries."
End Hanes report.
A note penciled in 1888 in the front of a book once owned by Julia Otey
makes the following observation; "A C is the cutest boy in the United
States". Inasmuch as there are other annotations in that same book referring
fondly to Arlie Cleveland, it would seem safe to assume the initials AC to
be a reference to Arlie, by the love-lorn Julia to whom he was later
married.
Notes for Julia Emmory Otey:
* It was thru Julia's mother Emma, that the Cleveland relationship with the
Herndons was established
>From her death notice in the Hale Missouri newspaper:
She was born December 15, 1871 on a farm near Carrollton Mo (sic) - the
"farm" at the time of her birth was actually a plantation known as
Herndon Hill.
She was educated in the Carrollton Public Schools, and graduated high school
with the class of 1889.
September 24, 1891 she was united in marriage with Arlie Cleveland. They
resided in Carrollton for two years, moving then to a farm near Hale (Mo)
where they have since made their home.
She was a member of the Hale Baptist Church. A lady highly respected and
esteemed by all who knew her. Funeral services in her memory were held from
the Willis Brother's Funeral Home, Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock; conducted
by Rev. E.C. Vanderpool/assisted by Rev. T.J.West of Carrollton. Interment
was made in the Oakhill Cemetary (Hale?)
Note from her Grandson Harold W. Cleveland:
She died about 1929. I was too young to know much about her except that she
was a kind and generous person to me. She was also quite strict and would
brook no "sass". One of the first "big" words I learned was from her oft
repeated statement to me;"young man! Don't you contradict me!" She would not
allow my Grandad to smoke in the house, and was firmly set against his (or
anyone's) drinking (even of a social nature.)
One of her favorite books was a copy of Tenneyson's complete works, as of
this writing(1/2/94) it is in my possession. Inside the front and back
covers are penciled repeated references to Alie Cleveland made in 1888, the
most telling being: "AC is the cutest boy in the United States". Though
outwardly strict and proper, she obviously had depths of emotions which were
rarely revealed.
I loved her dearly!
Children of Arlie Cleveland and Julia Otey are:
2 i. Otey Fairbank2 Cleveland, born 1893; died 1896.
Notes for Otey Fairbank Cleveland:
The obituary of Otey reads:
Otey Fairbank Cleveland, aged 2 years and 10 months, the oldest son of Arlie
Cleveland died this morning at the residence of his grandmother, Mrs.Cooper
(sic) on South Locust street. Mrs. Cleveland and her children had been
visiting her mother (sic) for several days. The little boy has been
complaining since Monday, but not until Wednesday evening was he taken
violently sick with inflamation of the bowels, hence his death this morning
was an unexpected and severe blow to his mother. Arlie is out at the farm
near Bridge Creek, and didn't even know the child was sick. A messenger was
sent out for him this morning to tell him of his son's serious illness. Soon
after the messenger left the little fellow died. No arrangements for the
burial will be made until Mr. Cleveland arrives tonight. In this sudden
affliction the father and mother have the sincere sympathy of the community.
The foregoing is from a newspaper clipping which unfortunately was undated
and gives no hint as to its source.
+ 3 ii. Harold Herndon Cleveland, born December 18, 1895 in Hale, Missouri;
died June 16, 1943 in Burlington, Iowa.
+ 4 iii. Vera Cleveland, born 1897; died 1984.
Generation No. 2
3. Harold Herndon2 Cleveland (Arlie E.1) was born December 18, 1895 in Hale,
Missouri, and died June 16, 1943 in Burlington, Iowa. He married (1) Elaine
Julia Irvin 1916 in Chilicothe, Missouri. He married (2) Susanne Maple
November 06, 1936 in Centralia, Missouri.
Notes for Harold Herndon Cleveland:
As reported by his son Harold W.:
Following his graduation from the Hale Missouri High School, Harold enrolled
in the Chillicothe Business College - an advanced educational move for his
time and place. After graduation, he was employed by the Brown Shoe Factory
in Brookfield, Missouri. While in Brookfield he married Elaine Julia Irvin
of Chillicothe, Missouri ca Fall or Winter of 1916-17. He was inducted into
the army at Linneas, Missouri October 3rd, 1917 as part of the 3rd division
of the first draft. He served in France with the AEF, first as a Field
Clerk, but was
promoted to the rank of Battalion Sergeant Major of company "C",
Headquarters Battalion, GHQ, in France on the 20th of February, 1919. He
was proud of the fact that he was for a time personal chauffeur to General
"Black Jack" Pershing. His service number was: 2311903.
He once told about standing in line in France for his turn to ride in an
"aeroplane" a new and daring form of transportation in those days. As the
aircraft was trying to land, the pilot lost control and it crashed and
burned, killing both the pilot and his passenger. As he put it, I (his
son) came that close to never being born; had he been one person sooner in
the line, he would have been the one killed.
After the war (WWI) he was employed as a shipping clerk by the Burlington
Railroad, until ca 1930 when he passed the required state board examination,
and became one of the first male beauticians in Missouri (if not the first).
After my mother's death he continued operating the shop. Ca Fall of 1936 he
married my mother's last apprentice, Susan Maples, who had stayed on to
help.
At the onset of WWII they moved to Burlington, Iowa where Susie continued to
operate the shop while he went back to the railroad as an "IOP division
clerk". In Burlington, they resided at 2617 Columbia St, Flint Hills Manor.
He suffered a fatal heart attack over his lunch while at work on June 16,
1943. He was rarely ill, not even susceptable to the common cold.
Notes for Elaine Julia Irvin:
According to her son Harold W. Cleveland:
I recall seeing pictures of her taken during WWI in a nurses uniform, and I
seem to remember hearing that she had served as an ambulance driver - an
unusual ocupation for a woman in those times. I find it believable because
she was a very strong-minded person who was successful at anything she
tried. She played piano "by ear", and was a pretty fair sketch artist.
To me, she seemed a big boned woman, but not fat - although she seemed to be
constantly fighting a tendency toward over-weight. Other sources however
describe her variously as being a small person with intense blue eyes; and a
slender, vivacious person with black hair. (I recall her normal hair color
being auburn, but she kept it dyed black because she felt, for some reason,
that it was more appropriate in her profession.)
She had a fiery temper, but could be extremely charming. It was this latter
attribute that made her so successful as a Beautician - women
seemed drawn to her and her clientel ranged from the upper echlons of
Hannibal (Mo) society to the local "Ladies of the Night". She was friend and
confidant to them all, and by all reports well loved by her family.
An example of her open-mindedness was revealed by her reaction to her
brother Oney's way of life; she disapproved of his life as a "bum" but
admired him for living as he preferred - despite criticism from his family.
She was licensed by the state as an Beauty Culture Instructor and always had
an apprentice or two helping in the "Salon" as she called it.
In 1933 she was diagnosed as suffering from colon cancer (a term not then
used in polite society!) and after an extended period of illness and two
major surgeries, she went into a coma in January of 1935, and on the 13th
she died.
Child of Harold Cleveland and Elaine Irvin is:
+ 5 i. Harold William3 Cleveland, born Private.
Child of Harold Cleveland and Susanne Maple is:
+ 6 i. Dale3 Cleveland, born Private.
4. Vera2 Cleveland (Arlie E.1) was born 1897, and died 1984. She married
John Schweppe WFT Est. 1911-1944.
Notes for Vera Cleveland:
As reported by her daughter Barbara Schweppe Hanes:
Mother and Harold (her brother) grew up in Hale (Mo) after moving to the new
house in town in 1910. The two seemed very close and she was so proud of him
when he went to WWI. Mother was very athletic and beautiful according to her
pictures. She graduated from high school when she was 16 and went to
Chillicothe Business College. Though always mad because she didn't have a
college degree, her education paid off for her.
After graduation, she answered an ad from a lawyer in Tribute, Kansas and
went west for her fortune. What she found besides a position that she loved
as legal secretary, was a high school football coach and teacher. (John
Schweppe)
They were married in 1922 and moved to Deming New Mexico. Mother worked for
the State until Kay (John Kerwin) was born in 1925. In 1927 they moved to
Alamogordo, where daddy was high school principal. They returned to Missouri
every summer to visit relatives. We moved back to Hale after the death of
grandmother(Julia Otey Cleveland) in the early 30's.
In 1936 we moved to Parsons Kansas where we lived until 1943. Mother worked
at a bank in Parsons and loved it. She did not work in Fort Scott until
daddy died in 1949. She then went to work as the superintendent of schools
secretary until 1952 when she became City Clerk where she remained until she
retired in 1975.
She taught classes on City Clerk-ship at KU each year and was well
regarded - was in Whose Who of American Women.
She began to be comfortable in retirement but had a stroke one year later.
After some nine months of intensive care she was well enough to return to
Fort Scott and live 9 more years until she died on my 50th birthday. (1984)
End of Hanes report.
A note by her nephew Harold W. Cleveland:
I regret that I had little contact with aunt Vera. What little time I had in
her company was memorable; she was kind and generous and was, in my opinion,
a strikingly handsome woman - I always thought of her as my "beautiful
aunt".
Notes for John Schweppe:
As reported by his daughter Barbara S. Hanes:
Daddy was from Reger Missouri, the youngest of 8 children. His parents
knew very little English and spoke mostly German. The children were
bright
and schooling was a serious matter. He got a bachelor's degree in Cameron
Mo., and a Masters from Iowa wesleyian.
He was a high school football coach and teacher when he met mother in
Tribute Kansas. In 1922 he and mother were married, and he accepted a job
in Deming New Mexico. He was in the National Guard Cavelry.
In 1927 they moved to Alamogordo (N.M.) where he became high school
principal.
About 1930 they moved back to Hale (Mo) where he became a collector for
equipment purchased by farmers. Later, he became a "blockman" selling
International Harvester equipment to dealers throughout Missouri.
In 1936 we moved to Parsons Kansas where he had a larger territory for
IH.
During the war he worked for the Government teaching Mexicans how to farm
sugar beets - he spoke Mexican.
After the war he and a friend bought the International Harvester
dealership in Fort Scott which he ran until his death from a heart attack
in 1949.

I am seeking information on the siblings, parents, and children of Mary
Cleveland who married Daniel Cumbie in Pike county, GA in 1832 and died
in GA before 1846.. I know of one child - Lavina Cumbie b. in Milner,
Pike Co., GA in 1836 - but think that there was at least one more, and
may have been several.
Any assistance will be appreciated.

This is in reply to a message left by Jon M. Newton.
I, too, have Cleveland ancestors born in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin
about the same time period as you are looking for.
I have Anice Henrietta Cleveland b. about 1850-1855 in Madison. Her parents
were Washburn Parker Cleveland and Marietta Cheeseborough. I would love to
compare notes and see if we could make a connection.
Thanks

The "moral" of this story is true. I can't confirm the particular
incident mentioned, but the facts are correct in that any call requesting
you to press 9,0,# is an attempt to scam you. It does happen, and you are
safe to advise folks to watch out.
