[CLEARY] Clearys From Balline
by Joan Stewart Smith via
I’ve been trying to identify and locate the parents of my GGG grandmother Margaret Cleary, who married attorney Patrick Molony of Tullybrackey Cottage, Bruff , County Limerick in 1820.
I have a civil marriage record, as well as a 1820 Limerick Gazette announcement that the bride was from “Ballyne in this county.” I interpreted that to be the nearby town land “Balline,” about six miles from Bruff and near Kilmallock.
At that time, Balline would have been in the Emlygrennan Parish, which is now part of the Bulgaden-Martinstown Parish.
As I understand, the occupant of Balline House at about that time was Patrick Cleary (Clery), brother of Thomas and Capt. John O’Clery. He was the son of Patrick Clery and the grandson of James Clery of nearby Ballinahinch.
The caption to a photo of Balline House online states “Balline House. Daniel Geran Clery’s uncle lived here.” That would be the son of the aforementioned brother Thomas, which makes Patrick his uncle.
My question is whether Margaret Cleary was associated with Balline House. This Patrick would have been the same generation as my GGG grandmother Margaret Cleary. Could she have been his sister?
The family trees I’ve looked at – probably based on the old family tree written up by William John Clery in 1890 – don’t mention women as siblings for several generations - except for the women the men married. I’m guessing the women were left off because they didn’t inherit the Clery name?
Then of course, Margaret Cleary could have been his relation and lived in another residence in Balline. It’s such a small area.
I’ve been searching rootsireland.ie and haven’t found any clues. Has anyone else been researching Clearys in this area?
Thanks!
Joan
