NILES - Frederick D. Cleary, 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at Summa Akron City Hospital, Akron, Ohio.
He was born March 25, 1934, in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) the son of Paul William and Mary Vasco Cleary.
Fred was a 1952 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, a 1961 graduate of Youngstown College with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, and a 1968 graduate of Westminster College with a Master's Degree in Education, and he attended Kent State University
He served two years in the U.S. Army, from 1956 to 1958, as a Secret Clearance Clerk and also played basketball for the post's Special Services Team.
Fred began his teaching career at Braceville High School and in 1962, coached the boys track team to the Ohio State Class A Championship.
He was honored as the Ohio Track Coach of The Year.
He was also Administrator of Student Affairs at Mahoning Valley Vocational School, principal at Maplewood High School, superintendent of Farmington Schools and in 1973, became superintendent of Fairhaven Schools, retiring in May of 1991.
Fred also worked at Arby's International as Director of Training Procedures of running a fast-food business to all franchises and their managers throughout the United States.
Fred served on numerous committees during his career, including the North Central Evaluation Teams, The Ohio State Beta Club, the Governing Board of the North East Ohio Special Education Regional Resources Center, the Trumbull County PIC Council Board, member of The C.E.T.A, the Governing Board of the North East Ohio Special Education Regional Resources Center, the Ohio and Trumbull County Education Associations, Niles Frontliners, Niles Roundballers, Niles Alumni Association, Youngstown State University Alumni Association, YSU Penguin Club, YSU Varsity Club, Trumbull County Association of Retired Teachers, and the Public Employees Retirement Association.
He was the former president of the Niles McKinley High School Alumni Association.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, original member of The Mt. Carmel Parish Council, member and past director of the Niles Lions Club
Fred loved to cook and bake and enjoyed traveling to Florida with his wife and vacationing in Florida and Myrtle Beach with his sons, Fred and Dan, and their families.
He also loved to go to his grandchildren's events.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary Ann Vecchione Cleary, whom he married Aug. 1, 1959; two sons, Fred M. Cleary (DeeDee) of Stow and Daniel J. Cleary (Colleen) of Concord; six grandchildren, Stephen Cleary (Kendall), Shannon Cleary, Marissa Cleary, Matthew Cleary, Ashley Cleary, and Sydney Cleary; a sister, Ann Pustay of Florida; a brother-in-law, Sal Vecchione (Dorothy) of Youngstown; a sister-in-law, Sr. Adele Vecchione A.S.C. of Warren, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Louise Harchar; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dan and Adelma Vecchione.
Friends may call on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home,.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles, preceded by a 9:30 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Niles City Cemetery where Fred will be honored for his military service by the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard.
Memorial donations to Youngstown State University Scholarship Fund.
Arrangements are being handled by the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
