Pat,
I still haven't been able to find any link between our Thomas F Cleary and Michael Cleary and Anne Dooley. Did you ever find the link that would show the connection between the US and Ireland and prove that those really are his parents? Also, are we connected to the person in the photo for this thread? If so how?

I'm seeking info on origins of Owen Cleary (1791-1869) and Margaret Donahoe (1802-?) who were born and married in Ireland and immigrated to the Quebec region about 1831-32 with two sons, Thomas (1825-?) and Hugh Vincent (1830-1869?), both of whom were born somewhere in Ireland. They had five daughters: Mary (1833-?), Margaret (1836-?), Catherine (1843-?), Bridget (1845-67), and Elizabeth (1847-?); all born in the Beauharnois area of Quebec after they arrived (according to various records) from Ireland.
Our Cleary family name is often spelled Clairy, Cleery, or Clary depending on the records. I've also found militia pay records for Owen being in the Huntingdon Loyal Volunteers and later Beauharnois Loyal Volunteers (1839). Also Canadian census records for 1842 and 1851.
Owen's son, Thomas, married Margaret Mallowney or Maloney in 1857 at St. Malachie parish in Ormstown, Quebec and according to Church records, they had six children: Owen (1859-?), Catherine Ann (1860-?), John (1862-?), Elisabeth (1863-?), Brigit (1865-?), and Theresa (1866-?).
Owen & Margaret's other son, Hugh V. married Catherine Phelan or Whelan (1835-1921) in 1854 also at St. Malachie parish and moved to Kingston, Ontario where they had 8 children: Catherine (1855-57), Owen Joseph, (1856-1905), Mary Ann (1858-?), James P. (1861-?), John Jeremiah (1864-1914), Katherine (?), Hugh (1865-71), and Thomas Hugh (1867-1928). Hugh was a railroad laborer and I am uncertain about his death, but he and Catherine plus two children are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Kingston.
Hugh & Catherine's son, Owen Joseph, is my great grandfather who married Bridget Deeley (or Daly) in 1881 and with three children, Mary Catherine "Marie" (1882-1970), Hugh (1884-1972) and Ann Louise ( 1887-1971), immigrated from Kingston to Pittsburgh, PA around 1889 where my grandfather, John Joseph (1890-1951), was born along with three other siblings: Elisabeth Anastasia "Lil" (1892-1979), James Leo (1894-1971) and Owen J. Jr (1898-1932).
Do any of these names and details ring a bell with anyone? If so, can you please contact me to add to this info?
While I've been able to piece together names, dates and some locations in Quebec and Ontario with some certainty, I still have no clue where Owen & Catherine came from in Ireland or where their two sons, Thomas and Hugh, were born. I've searched passenger lists but without success. I would love to connect with any family still in Canada or other cousins from those who immigrated to the U.S. and likely settled in the Pittsburgh area.
I am especially interested in any family photos, particularly of Jerry Cleary (1890-1918) who enlisted in the CEF in 1915 and served in the 18th Battalion (Western Ontario Regiment) and was killed in action 10 Oct 1918 - three weeks before the war ended. I have a photo of his grave at Bucquoy Road Cemetery, France but would be interested in a portrait of him.
Jerry's given name was likely Jeremiah. His father was John Jeremiah Cleary (1884-1914) who married Alice Guirey in 1893 at St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston. Jerry didn't marry but his other siblings were Kathleen (1896-?), Alice Anastasia (1899-?), Marguerite Eveleen (1902-1975), and Hanley (1904-06).
Thank you for any assistance or leads you can provide.

Hi. I was reading your post and I, too, come from Cleary family roots and in fact my gggrandfather was an Owen Cleary b 1803. My family came from Carlow but I am not sure exactly from where my Owen cleary originated. I do know though that he and my gggrandmother had their oldest daughter in Gorey,Wexford and then were in Laois before settling in Carlow. I have had another contact whose Cleary relatives were also from Wexford. Maybe you could try there? Just a thought...
Good luck!
Cheers,
Regina
