An elderly lady by the name of Joyce Odum Smelley is getting ready to publish a large book on the Smelley ancestors from Scotland to Alabama. She needs a count by Jan 15 to know how many copies to order. Here is her synopsis if you want to order:
"Born into a very large Smelley family, I have read gravestones for 70 years to group and separate
1400 descendants for ten generations of William Smelley.
Ancestor lines are suggested for Smelley families in VA, NC, SC, and AL. Comprehensive and different!
There are 100 illustrations and vignettes: maps, charts, tax and census records, war records,
documenting originals, interviews, newspapers, 1750 Smellie house, 1800 Smelley house, and family pictures.
The book is 8.5"x11" hardback of 318 pages.
Prepublication prices are $55 plus $6 shipping for any number of books. Respond by 15 January 2014
to reserve a copy. I need a count. Expect a March delivery."

I have more info on William Cleary (1818-1893) His father was John Cleary abt 1795?. John had 2 other son's Richard & John Jr, I believe he also had 3 daughters. A daughter Joanna, who married William Thoms, a daughter Mary Ann who married William Taylor and a Daughter Catherine who married Horatio Howell. This is the only info available on record that I have found so far.
They bought the Danson plantation on the south side of Harbor Grace 12 June 1845. I found it at the registry of deeds. they were renting part it with their father John and the son's decided to buy it. It was next door to the Noel plantation.
William Cleary married Martha Noel. They had a son Job Cleary who went to the US. A son John Wiltshire Cleary and daughter Susannah Elizabeth Cleary,
I was told they were directly from Ireland. My aunt who died in her 90's knew Catherine Cleary when she was a little girl and said she was very Irish. She believed they had have come from Dublin Area.
William was an Orangeman in Carbonear. he was shot in the back twice during the Newfoundland Affray in the 1860's and lived. A Protestant Cleary was probably shot first.
JOHN WAS CATHOLIC AND SHE WAS PROTESTANT. He wanted the children raised Protestant just encase anything happened to him. He thought they would be better off.
>From what I understand from my aunt, John went fishing one day and never returned.
