According to family lore, my great great grandfather John Cleary's brother Phillip Cleary of Westminister Maryland came to the US from Ireland several years before John. I found a Phillip Clary in the Census in Carroll County in the 1850 Census. Westminister is in Carroll County, Maryland. Recently I noted a Ancestry.com family tree that included Phillip Cleary with data that was consistant with the 1850 Census data. While I am not sure that this is my gg grandfather's brother the evidence is interesting and I would like to contact with the individual who prepared the tree or anyone who has any connection with the family. There is a long list of decendents including Dowdy, Chittenden, Beilien, Thim etc. If anyone knows more the decendents or ancestors of Phillip Cleary or other family members will you please contact me.

Hi Robin,
This is the info I have:
My great-grandfather was James Markham, the son of Thomas Markham and Mary Ryan. I believe he had a brother named Thomas, who had a son named John, born July 17, 1894, in Lowell, Massachusetts.
James lived in Lowell, Massachsetts for most of his life, and I know that Thomas lived there for a time as well; he was married to Bridget Markham.
I know my great-grandfather James was born in Ireland, about 1860, possibly in County Clare. Our family name was originally "O'Markahan," but sometime in the 1800's it was changed (probably inadvertantly). There are also English Markhams, and it may have been done to hide the Irish ancestry (especially for those who immigrated to the US);
Coincidentally I am leaving for 10 days in Ireland in about a week...with a planned visit to the Clare Heritage & Genealogical Research Centre.
-John
