Dear Listers,
My great grandfather, John Michael Cleary was born on 27 September 1876 in Cappoquin Waterford to William Cleary and Mary Blute. The stated godparents were Thomas Malomey and Helena Blute.
William and Mary were married on 16 August 1875. The marriage record states:
"William Cleary of Cappoquin, the son of Patrick Cleary of Cappoquin to Mary Blute of Cappoquin, the daughter of John Blute of Cappoquin. Witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Mullery of Cappoquin and Helen Hern of Cappoquin."
Of note, William was actually born in Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales on 27 December 1855 and was the son of Patrick Cleary and Ellen McCowleif (assuming incorrect spelling - McAuliff? (amongst others)).
William Cleary and Mary Blute had several children:
John Michael, b.1876 Waterford
Ellen Cleary, b.1878 Waterford
Patrick Cleary, b.1880 Waterford
William Joseph Cleary, b.1883 Bradford Yorkshire
James Edward Cleary, b.1886 Bradford Yorkshire
Florence May Cleary, b.1893 Bradford Yorkshire
Margaret Cleary, b.1895 Bradford Yorkshire
My grandfather, Francis Patrick Cleary (b.1903 Bradford England) lived for some time in the 1920's and early 1930's in Boston and in Canada with some relatives who sent packages to my family after WWII (to help because of the food and goods rationing). My family don't recall who the packages were sent from.
I would be very interested to hear from anyone with any connection to the above or to anyone who knows any details of Patrick Cleary or Ellen McCowleif (both are untraced at this time). My best guess at this time is that both would have been born in Waterford in the early 1800's.
Kind regards,
Dominic Cleary
