Hi,
Thank you for your reply. Do you know if Cleary is another spelling of McCleary? Or are the Cleary and McCleary surnames two separate families who were connected to the Hardens in Lee Co., IL?
My earliest proven Harden ancestor is my G4 grandfather, Isaac Harden, who was born in 1767 in PA and died in Somerset Co., PA in 1848. He lived in both Somerset County in Pennsylvania and in Allegany County, Maryland. The two counties share a common border and are located in the Allegheny Mountains. Isaac Harden's father has been reported to be David Harden of PA.
One of Isaac Harden's children was my G3 grandfather, George HARDEN, who was born in PA and died in Wellersburg,
Somerset County, PA. George married Hester UHL. Two of George's and Hester's sons were Solomon HARDEN and Jacob HARDEN. Jacob was my G2 grandfather. Jacob was born on February 2, 1822 in Somerset County, PA. Solomon and Jacob and their families migrated from Somerset Co., PA to Lee County, Illinois in 1855. Jacob Harden died in Lee Co., IL on February 21, 1907. Jacob married Catherine COOK, who was born on December 20,1825 in Southampton Township, Somerset County, PA. Jacob and Catherine were married on March 18, 1847 in Somerset Co. PA. They both died and are buried in Lee Co., IL.
One of Jacob and Catherine Harden's children was my great-grandfather, Dennis C. HARDEN, who was born on October 4, 1849 in Pennsylvania. Dennis married Kate McCLEARY in Lee Col., IL. Kate was born in Pennsylvania. She died on December 3, 1889 in Nelson Township, Lee County, IL. Kate's parents were William McCLEARY and Salinda MOREHEAD.
A Harden.in.ing DNA Project has been started which is using DNA testing to find out which men with the HARDEN/HARDIN/HARDING surnames are actually related and share a common ancestry.
http://home.carolina.rr.com/whardin/hhh.htm
Y-Chromosome DNA is passed from father to son down through the generations just as surnames are passed from father to son. Only men inherit the Y-chromosome, therefore only men can be participants in a Y-chromosome DNA Family Reconstruction Project. The Y-Chromosome DNA
samples for the Harden.in.ing DNA project can only be provided by HARDEN, HARDIN or HARDING males who have the HARDEN/HARDIN/HARDING Surnames.
A male cousin of mine who has the Harden surname ordered a DNA kit and is a participant in the Harden.in.ing DNA Project. He is a descendant of Isaac, George and Jacob Harden.
If you know of a male descendant of Solomon Harden who has the HARDEN surname, he would be a very welcome new member of the Harden.in.ing DNA project. Please contact me for additional information.
A message was posted on the Harden message board on 31 Mar 2002 which said:
"I am in possession of a photo of John Thomas Harden, his wife Carrie Ellen Wesser and their daughter Helen. Photo is dated January 11, 1938.
John Thomas - Born 9/15/1861. Died 3/14/1943, in Beatrice, NB. Son of Solomon and Susan(Uhl) Harden. Carrie Ellen Wesser born 9/17/1864, in Burlington, IA and died in 1938.
If this is of interest email me for a scan of the photo: eh_cleary(a)hotmail.com"
I tried to send a message to the above e-mail address and it bounced back to me. Do you have any idea who the above person is and how he can be contacted?
I look forward to hearing from you.

My grandfather was Bruce Earl Cleary born Ap 14, 1890 in Elizabethtown,
Illinois. His brother was Ed Cleary. Their father was Edward Otto Cleary.
I wonder if there is a connection.

I have a Patrick Cleary born 1848 to a John Cleary and Ann Watson but I do not know any details of whom he married etc. I think the name Patrick was in my Cleary family quite a few times but I cannot tally your date up with any other. It would help if you could pinpoint the exact location of birth of your Patrick Cleary as the name is quite common in Ireland. Have you tried www.familysearch.org?
Kind regards, June
