Hello Pat
It was only after I'd posted it to you that I realised my timing and details were out of sync.

Hello! Valerie
Sorry I cannot help you with this query. My Thomas Cleary was a convict and was already in Tasmania and married with children in 1852. He was born in Tipperary, Ireland and was transported to Australia for stealing. Sorry I could not help you but I will keep your message on file in case I come across anything that might help.
Kind regards
Pat Smith

My gt gt. grandfather was Thomas Cleary, born in 1817 in Ireland (not sure where). He married Margaret Dwyn (my gt gt grandmother) on 25 December 1852 when he was 35 years old. She would have been 23 years old.
To my knowledge they had only one child, my gt grandmother Eugenie Cleary (born in London, England) when they were 55 and 43 respectively, which either meant that they had older children who had grown up and left home (only one child according to the 1881 Census) or there was some reason why he married as an older man and they had a child so late in life. I've been puzzling over this.
I wonder if your story of a Thomas Cleary being transported might have accounted for this time lapse. What do you think?
I'm trying to find his and his wife's background - but no luck so far.
