Re: [Cleary] Kings County
by Catherine J. Ramsey-Hammond
Hi Anne:
It sounds like we have connected. Joseph Craig Cleary is my third
great-grandfather. He was born June 9, 1778 in Kings County, Ireland. He
died in 1832 in Wesleyville, Quebec, Canada. His wife was Elizabeth Ann
Egan born December 3, 1785 in Ireland. She died on December 10, 1864 in
Longue Pointe, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They were married in 1805 in
Kildare, Ireland. They had 10 children - Maria, Edward, John, William,
Ann, Issac, Daniel, Uriah, Elijah and Elizabeth. In 1832 Joseph C. Cleary
joined the general migration to Canada, which was in progress at that time.
Many of his friends and relatives had already settled there, but after two
months he was taken with the cholera and died. That disease was epidemic
at the time.
Mrs. Cleary and her family moved to Longue Pointe, near Montreal, where her
sons carried on large farming operations for many years.
I live on Lake Simcoe (north of Toronto), Ontario, Canada.
My Dad was Robert Howard Good. His mother was Gertrude Anne Cleary. Her
parents were Elijah Cleary and Angelina Brown. Elijah's parents were
William Cleary and Anne Jane Shaw (this family are the founders of
Shawbridge, Quebec (now Prevost). William's parents were Joseph Craig
Cleary and Elizabeth Ann Egan. My Dad's father's family came here from
Scotland. My mother's father's family came from England and her mother's
family came from Ireland so I guess we are British Islers.
I have heard some family talk that one of the Cleary brothers went to the
United States - I think it was Uriah or maybe Elijah. All I remember about
that conversation was that it was an unusual name. However, my research
has not gone that far yet. Next month I am going on holidays to Quebec and
will be visiting and doing research in Dorval (where my father was born),
Shawbridge (where my grandmother Cleary was born) and Mystic (where my
great grandmother Anglina Brown was known to be at one time.
Who is your father's ancestor?
