I am looking for info on my grandfather john m cleary. He married annette motter around 1944 . my mother was born 4-1945. They also had son. They lived in manhattan, ny. John also had a twin brother [dont know his name]. Johns last known address was chambersburg, pa. Can anyone help.
G'day from OZ,
I have been a member of the 'CLARY-L' list at Rootsweb for several years but seldom if ever seem to get a message on any surname but CLARY. I had thought that alternate spellings would have been covered but in case that is not so so I thought I'd give the more (to me) common name of CLEARY a whirl.
Dependent upon which cerificate you believe, my Gfather Joseph Patrick CLEARY was born to parents Michael CLEARY (farmer) & Catherine FARRELL in Waterford in the early 1860's. Several paid research attempts have failed to located any BDM records concerning anything further than children baptised to parents of that name-set at St.Declans in Ardmore co. Waterford viz.Ellen (b.1849), John (b.1853), Margaret (b.1855), James (b.1859) & Patrick (b.1861).
Joseph Patrick who I guess could really be Patrick given my family's passion for nick-names & Margaret found there way to Australia for J.P. to marry a Sarah Worringham in 1896 & raise 11 children. Margaret married James W. Maher in 1905. Nothing is known about Ellen, John or James.
Family lore suggests that JP & Margaret first went to NZ where J.P. undertook but did not complete training for the priesthood & may have lived at a sheep Farm called 'Vernon's Run'. NZ enquiries have not been answered.
I am so used to coming up empty with this search that I don't really expect a reply to this but at least I've given it a try.
Best Regards,
Ross Cleary, Kiama, NSW, Australia.
Jim,
I have a small database of Cleary's from Cork City and I found a Patrick
Joseph born 1964, Birth Reg. Vol 5, Page 114. Hope it helps.
Alice M.

Jim:
my g'father, Robert J. Cleary was born in Ireland ca. 1876/1877 to Patrick
Cleary and Mary Hogan and emigrated 1885 to NY. This info gleaned from NY
marriage license and I have no info as to his time in Ireland. I do not know
of any relations and it appears that there were none in US as his in-laws
were the witnesses at the wedding. I recall my g'mother mentioning County
Cork but, she may have been referring only to her own family as they did come
from Cork.
Since it would seem that you have done your homework, any ideas as to
developing info in Ireland? I have not been able to determine a DOB for
g'father and have done 1875/6/7 Irish birth indexes with no luck.

Dear Listers,
I am forwarding a message that I wrote in response to someone asking about my
CONWAYs (both named Mary) who married my CLEARYs. Anyway, all the material
is listed below. If you have any connections you are welcome to email me. I
do believe that most of my CLEARY cousins are still in Ireland, some that
have left have returned. ( I have met about 12 of my CLEARY first cousins
over four generations, and there were about 12 more. )

Tom,
My Conways may or may not be the Conways families I listed in the ED of the
Census. I only know for sure of two Mary Conways who are apparently not
related to each other, one is my Great-grandmother and one is my
great-great-grandmother. My Great Grandmother was married to Michael Cleary
of Cloontyconnaught townland (AKA Cloutha & currently Clounty near Scariff).
I was told by Gerard Madden of Tuamgraney East Clare Heritage Center, that my
great-grandmother was the sister of one of the following:
Michael Conway (24-AUG-1860)
Michael Conway (13-FEB-1862)
Michael Conway (26-JUL-1864)
Patrick Conway (11-AUG-1860)
The 1901 Census for my CLEARY family has the Wife as Mary (known to be Mary
Conway) Cleary and the Mother of Michael Cleary as Mary (also known to be
Mary Conway) Cleary, both living at this time. Wife is listed as 44 years
old, mother is listed as 75 years old. Children listed are:Margaret 20,
Katie 18, Thomas 16, Anne 13 (my grandmother), Michael 11, John 10, Elizabeth
4. Head of family Michael Cleary is listed as age 46. Other children are
older and not present in 1901: Mary b.1875, Bridget (AKA Delia) b. 1877, and
William b. 1879. I have birthdate-baptismal dates for these children.
There is also one Conway family listed in census of 1901. I suspect it may
be my Conways (but are possibly not related). This family has head of house
listed as James Conway age 55, Wife Margaret age 41, Son Denis age 13,
Daughter Mary age 9, Son Patrick age 8.
I recall my cousin mentioning what townlands Mary Conway's family
(g-grandmother) and Mary Conway's family (g-g-grandmother) came from. I have
checked my notes and cannot find this information. Sorry. This
Cleary-Conway family lived in Cloontyconnaught townland of County Galway in
1901, County Clare in 1911. The county boundary shifted between these two
censuses. This townland is between Mountshannon and Scariff on Lough Derg.
Quite a beautiful place.
If I had stayed just a few more days in Ireland, there was a school teaher
named Conway that I could have met, who was known to be related.
Hope this helps,
Jim McNamara
