Hi,
I'm new to the list. I'm Phil Worthington, married to a Cleary (Michelle).
Michelle's family is huge in Indianapolis, and it seems that most
descendants of her grandfather Cleary have remained in this central Indiana
area. I have names and dates for these Cleary's, but going back, I have very
little info about ancestors.
Here's what I have:
Bernard Augustus Cleary (M's grandfather), b. 6-18-04, d. 6-15-80. Hearsay
says he came from Loogootee, Indiana (Martin County).
s. of Thomas Joseph Cleary (1851-1928) and Sarah Catherine (Langford) Cleary
(1877-1921).
Bernard Cleary (also called Gus) supposedly had siblings, of whom I have no
information.
Married Dorothy May Fike, b. 7-20-10.
d. of Lizzie Hanna (Shinault) Fike, b. 8-16-1877 and George Washington Fike
(1877-1915). Lizzie Fike later married Earl Thomas Wilkinson, b. 1895, d.
1938.
Hearsay says Dorothy Fike came from Madison County, Indiana, and that her
parents came from around Kentucky/southern Indiana.
Thomas Joseph Cleary, by hearsay, supposedly had siblings, but none of these
are known.
His father's name was Michael Cleary, we have a picture of him. On back of
the picture is some information: b. 1822, d. 1-29-1893. Native of the Parish
of Allentown, Land of Rothbride, Co. Kildare, Ireland
(supposedly taken from headstone at St. Mary Cemetery in Ireland)
The information concerning Rothbride and Allentown seem dubious -- searches
turn up zero hits on Rothbride alone, and I can't find any Allentown in
parish records for Ireland.
Whether it was Michael Cleary who came with two brothers to America during
the height of the great famine or Thomas Joseph Cleary later, is not
certain. Some talk says the brothers were separated at Ellis Island, but I
suspect this is unreliable information.
Michelle's father and several of his brothers have a form of what the
doctors say is a congenital heart disease (the technical sounding name is
non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyology).
I haven't seen a lot of activity on this list, but I'm hoping someone else
is also working on their Clearys out there.
Phil
