Vickie. It has a long time. I think my last post to you was back in 2001. I was trolling Ancestry and looking at posts. You metioned your dad John used to have a newspaper articel that you wanted a copy of. Do you know what was in the article? The times we visited your mom and dad were memorable. What special people they were! Let me know what you need and if I have I have it I will send it to you.
Leo Clear
I am sending this from a genealogy library because I don't have an Ancestry membership.

Hi Deanna. The Hell family names was changed in the 1830-1840's. Clear is a translation from German meaning, "clear, bright, brilliant." The Clear family lived in Bad Axe, or what is now Viroqua, Wisconsin before Minnesota. About the time the Civil War broke out the family had moved. Jacob Clear was arrested during that time frame for an axe murder, but the sentence was later commuted by the governor. My dad's family still resides in Todd County. Let me know what information I can you help you with. Glad to share.

The name of Clear is also of German origin. The first ancestor on the German side that can be identified is Michael Hell. The Hell family, as near as can be determined, is first recorded in land deeds in Rockingham County, Va. From there they moved to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisonsin, and have been in Minnesota for about 6 generations or so. The name CLEAR is translation from the German name of Hell. German information (our 411) is overloaded with the name of Hell. If you feel you would like more information please contact me.
