Is there a connection to my Clears in Sussex? I go as far back as John Clear b1796 married to Frances. They had Benjamin Clear 1816 in Sidlesham sussex. Hemarried Sarah Purvey. There was alsoHarriet, Phoebe, Jane, James, and Charles. Benjamin Clear (my great great grandfather) had Charles 1842 Lindfield, Sussex who married Emily Sedge, and Jane and Clara. Charles ( my great grandfather) had wlliam, ellen, charles, frederck(my grandfather), Rosetta, walter, Ada,alfred and albert. Benjamin Clear ran off to America and was made an American citizen in 1862. Heis listed in the census as Clare not Clear. Let me know if there could be any links! So many Clears in Sussex and now Kent!

Well, from a combination of ancestry hints I have managed to get one or two generations further back in my quest to:
George Clare - m Mary (no maiden name known)
parents of:
William Clare
born 4 Oct 1785
christened Westminster 31 Oct 1785
Married 24 Feb 1811 (Clear)
to Ann Haines (b 1785)
at East Wittering, Sussex, England
Died 1840 (Clear)
reg'd 1st quarter
at Chichester, West Sussex, England
Children of William and Ann Clare/Clear
Robert Clear (1813-1895)
William Clear (1816-1884) [my William Clear as mentioned earlier in this thread]
Mary Ann Clear (b 1825)
in the 1841 census the children are listed under the name of CLARE
with their widowed mother Ann Clare
at Green Lane, Althorne, Essex, England
However from 1851 they are called CLEAR in the census returns
So it seems I need to look for more CLAREs to get further back in time.

1. My mother was Maude Clear, the daughter of James Douglas clear.
2. James, my grandfather, was born in St. Louis in 1889;
3. His father was JAMES Clear, born about 1865 in columbia, TN.
4. JAMES'father was CHARLES CLELAR born in Canada about 1840.
5. Charles Clear's father, name unknown, was also born in CANADA circa 1820? So it may be presumed that this Clear family arrived in North America before 1820.
A great great aunt, whom I never met, wrote that the Clears originally came from GRAVESEND, ENGLAND.
I do not know the parents of the Canadian Clears born in circa 1820. They were of the Episcopalian faith.
Person in sentence 4 was a traveling musician who played the flute and worked his way down to Tennessee where he met and married my ancestor Amanda Hodge. In Tennessee he worked as a "tinner".
They came to Missouri in 1870.
Do any of the Gravesend Clears recognize any of these people?
Alex in Missouri

The prize of $10 offered to any couple who would be married on the band stand Thursday afternoon at the Street Fair was won by Oscar Clear and Miss Emma E Newton of Oneida. The licenses and minister's services were free. But the bridegroom did not escape all expense; for when the ceremony was over, a crowd of small boys armed with tin pans, horns, etc. appeared on the scene and after demonstrating their ability to make a noise showed him the Candy Kitchen where he contributed a dollar to their enjoyment.

Hallo Myra,
Nice to hear from you so promptly.
Our Clears stayed in Herts until Joseph Clear b.1848 moved to Poplar as a Miller, the next 2 generations stayed in London, my husband's Grandfather being a Gents Outfitter in Balham and opening branches round about, run by his sons - Reginald, Leslie and Gordon. Leslie was my father-in-law and my husband is his only son, born 1938, and has spent a lifetime in Horticulture ( he had polio as a boy and was told to go in for an outdoor occupation)
There are Clears round here, in the Littlehampton area, who seem to have been here several generations (see Public Trees on Ancestry)so I don't see an immediate connection between us unfortunately.
Happy hunting, Penny

Hi Penny,
I don't think we've been in touch before but anyway it would be interesting to compare notes. My Clears are from Sussex and later Kent. I go back as far as John Clear b c1796 birthplace unknown. He married Frances and had several children - Charles, James, Jane, Phoebe, Harriet, aand Benjamin. Benjamin was my great great grandfather born 1816 in Siddlesham Sussex. He married Sarah Purvey and they had Clara, Jane and Charles. Benjamin's story is fascinating. His son Charles was my great grandfather b 1842 in Lindfield Sussex. He married Emily Sedge and moved to kent where they had lots of children including my grandfather Frederick Clear b 1879. They settled in Gravesend but Frederick had Charles, Eleanor and Walter (my dad). Walter was born 1918 in London within the sound of Bow Bells. I don't know why he was born in London. I was born in 1957 in Gravesend. I would love to hear from you esoecially if you think I may have relatives that you know in Sussex or if we're connecte!
d. Look forward to hearing from you. Myra Saunders(Clear)

Hallo Elizabeth,
Rather belatedly found this thread about Clears.
Although we live in Sussex (and know some Sussex Clears) my husband's line comes from Hertfordshire, around the Stanstead Abbotts area in 1700s.
Edward Clear, b 1804 Thundridge, married Mary Wootton from Farnham Essex in 1880s.Have never found any other members of our Family Tree to date, here's hoping!
