Arminta Catherine Clear (Bates) is my gg grandmother. Her parents are James M Clear and Tabitha Rose who were married in Tazewell County, Virginia on Oct 20, 1841. They lived in Smyth County, Virgnia until about 1849 when they moved to Pike County, Kentucky. Looking for links to Smyth County Clears or any information on these families.

I have always been raised to believe that Arminta was Native American, more specifically, Cherokee. I have heard that some of her family (brothers or cousins) performed in the Mills Brothers Circus in a "Indian Show." Were they Native Americans or just actors?? I think one of them went by the name Chief White Eagle. If memory serves me correctly, his name was Bill.
Being the ggg granddaughter of James (Monroe or Marion) Bates, I would love to see this picture. I believe I have pictures of Arminta and Lucinda that I can share too.
Any info on any of these families would be most welcomed and appreciated! Thanks!

I am descended from Samuel Sallee & Elizabeth Croft. These are the parents of Urana Sallee. I had attached the marriage of Anna talles to Isaac as I had thought it was right. I am glad to know that others had the same info.
I am adding the info of the Hell / Clear name change to my genealogy history. Where exactly is this info at?

I am looking for the siblings
and parents of my ancestor,
Charles CLEAR
born in 1840, in Canada, of parents born in Canada.
Their religion was Episcopalian.
In 1860 we find Charles Clear in Columbia, Tenn, married to Amanda Hodge.
Family lore says that he was a traveling musician and played the flute...and that he was of Irish ancestry. this is family lore. I have no proof..
By 1870, this family is in the St. Louis, Mo area.
Does anyone have any information about Clears in Canada, probably Ontario, perhaps in St. Catherine's in a 1840?
Thank you
Alexandra in MO

I have only just discovered this part of the ancestry site, and am thrilled to find a Clear thread.
The farthest back I can find any documented Clears is the 1851 census form for William Clear living in Burnham on Crouch, Essex.
So I would love to hear if anyone has any info about earlier Essex Clears.
