Jo,
Yes I agree - it is very difficult researching the Clears. I wish you luck in your research and perhaps we will both have a lucky break soon. Let me know if anything turns up - and do stay in touch.
take care
myra

Hallo Jo,
so nice to hear from a Clear!!! Yes - my research has shown a lot of Clears in Sussex and I also have heard of John de la clere but like you I cannot remember where!! Perhaps someone can help us. I can't help wondering if we are linked to the Norman invasion in some way and the spooky thing is my brother and my daughter are naturally excellent speakers of french!!!! We probably are all connected - the devon Clears - sussex Clears and Kent clears. my ancestors started off in Sussex even though I am now in Kent but I have only gone back so far so Devon before that is very likely. How fascinating that there are Clears in New Zealand!! It would be great to compare trees one day - it would be fascinating. thanks again for contacting me and please stay in touch.
Myra

I am looking for the ancestor of my Charles Clear who was born in Canada
about 1840.
His parents also were born in Canada. About 1815? Names are unknown.
We believe, thru family lore, that they came from the area around St.
Cahterine's, Ontario.
My Charles Clear landed( by way of his musical performances in traveling
groups), in
Columbia, Tenn. (Maury County)
There he married Amanda Shelton Hodge in 1860.
In 1870 this family moved to St. Louis, MO.
Related names in St Louis are: Chouquette, Reily. (in 1880-1900.)
In St. Louis he worked as a salesman for the Wrought Iron Range Company.
Related names in Columbia TeNN in 1860 were Shelton, Hodge, Alderson ,
Foxhall,
Are you related to Charles Clear? Do you know who his parents and siblings
are?
It was said that the family was Irish and they practiced the Episcopalian
religion.
Thank you...
Alexandra in Missouri

I also am/was a Clear and have reserched for decades. There are many clears in the south East coast of England, in fact most seem to be in the area where william the conqueror landed in 1066 from France! There was I believe a John de la Clere but bother it, I can'f tell you where I read it!
The name has different spellings.
I am from a cluster of Clears from Devon, very few let now one of them emigrated to New Zealand and there is a cluster over there.
There is a St Cleer in Cornwall which is UK most south western county.
Probably no use to you but may slight interest, good luck with your research.
Jo

Sarah-Just read your message. My Clear family came from Ireland, and my great-grandmother's name was Sarah. Her father, John Patrick (went by Patrick), lived and died in Taylorville, Illinois. I believe Patrick's father was James, but not sure. Patrick was born Dec.5, 1835 in Parsonstown, Ireland. If you have any information to add to this, or if we are distant cousins, I would be very interested to hear from you.
