CLEAR Francis J.
Private Co K, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27.th Division
KIA 1 september 1918
Plot B - Rij 01 - Graf 19
Army Serial Number 1205284
Francis Clear came from Glens Falls, Warren County, NY. He was born in February 1897 in Luzerne, NY. His parents were Patrick G. Clear and Mary Agnes Champagne. His siblings were Therese, Catherine, James, Rachel, Hohnnie, Maurice, Edward, Thomas and Bernard.
In 1917 he entered the National Guard (2nd Infantry Regiment NY National Guard) with his brother Maurice, who was 2 years younger. Both young men were High school students and were very good baseball players. The 2nd Infantry Regiment became the 105th Infantry regiment of the 27th Division. Francis became a "runner", what was not surprising for a talented sportsman. Both brothers arrived in Europe end of May, 1918. On September 1st, Francis was hit by a hand grenade, during the fightings around Mount Kemmel in the Ypres Salient. He was killed immediately and was first buried in the Abeele aerodrome Military Cemetery. Two days befor, Maurice had been wounded in the arm and while he was going to the ambulance post, he was hit again, this time by shrapnel in the leg. He was transferred afterwards to a hospital in England. Only in 1986 Maurice received his purple heart. He died in 1988. He always dreamed of coming to the Flanders Field Ceemtery to see the grave of his brother. T!
his dream was never came out. Francis parents never received his Purple Heart.
