I’m looking for corroborating evidence that Timothy Winslow (b. abt 1654) and Sarah Winslow (b.???) knew and associated with Timothy Clare (Clear) b. abt 1665 prior to coming to America. We know these two families had very close ties once they reach North Carolina, but there is a possibility that this friendship might have started long before the Americas.
We know that Timothy Clare came to Maryland with Thomas David and Thomas Hassold in 1674. He sailed from Bristol, England to Nevis Island in the West Indies and was in Perq, NC by 1681 according to "Meet Our Ancestors". The Quaker and Southern Winslows, Elizabeth Doherty Herzfeld, (The Reprint Company), pg. 3
We recently found that there was a Sarah Winsloe leaving Bristol on Sept. 18th of 1685 and arriving Virginia via Barbados. The passenger list shows her alone. (http://english-america.com/places/br680001.html) Bristol was the same port that Timothy Clare departed from on his journey to the new world. This may be a coincidence as Bristol was a port used by many coming to America but it may also be an indication of an earlier acquaintance. The timing is such that Timothy Winslow could have followed Timothy Clare (although no record had been found) to start making a home in this new land for his new family (Thomas, his son was born 1 Aug 1682). Once settled in, he could have sent for his wife and new son.
Most research work on locating Timothy Winslow’s ancestors has focused on him not being an immigrant. However, given this close relationship between the Clares and the Winslows, it may well be that Timothy Winslow followed his friend Timothy Clare for a better life in the new world.
The Clares had sizable land and wealth accumulated in the Carolina’s and may have come to this country with some of that wealth. It is our hope that a more predominate paper trail will be left behind by someone who owns property and is educated like Timothy Clare than the seemly poorer and uneducated Timothy Winslow. If the relationship between the Clares and the Winslows reach back to their family homes before coming to America, it may be easier following the Clares than the Winslows to that origin.
I realize there is much speculation and assumption built into this theory and it may be equally hard to track the Clares in England as it might be the Winslows. We know through our recent Y-DNA results, however, that the Timothy Winslow lineage is not closely related to the New England Winslow line. I just think it is time to focus efforts in a direction that might be more productive.
On the Winslow Genealogy web site http://winslowtree.com there are a number of avenues that are being speculated as possible origins of Timothy Winslow’s family. Once you remove the possibility that Timothy is not a direct relation to the New England Winslows then Timothy immigrating with his friend Timothy Clare seems to me to be the most probable. Adding this new evidence that there was a Sara Winsloe who came to America via the same port of departure as Timothy Clare, in the right time frame, just adds to this possibility.
If anyone has sourced material that would provide any support (or debunk) to this theory please send me an e-mail or post information in our “Timothy, Who’s Your Daddy” forum at http://www.winslowtree.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=6
Thank you,
Stephen Winslow

Wow, thank you so much, i'm from England and had no idea that there was so many Clear's in the world, especially America and i had no idea that the surname might have a German origin, we always thought it was Irish, or maybe French.

Our family traced back to the late1700's in the U.S. and then we hit a complete dead end. Turns out they arrived in the U.S. from Germany with the original surname of "Hell". Not a popular name of course so they renamed to "Clear", which is the english translation for "Hell" from German.
