Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Special News Extra - Archive CD Books
=====================================
This special news covers two really important new projects:
1. Water for a school in Kenya
Archive CD Books provides water for school children.
2. Launch of British-Genealogy.com
A new web site, and all *new* British-Genealogy mailing lists
===================================================================
WATER FOR A SCHOOL IN KENYA
Here we are, enjoying the benefits of comfortable homes, good food, and
luxuries such as computers and the internet, and not the least, good
education for our children.
We think nothing about spending £14.00 on a CD of an old book, and here
at Archive CD Books I am prepared to buy expensive equipment, and old
books costing many hundreds of pounds.
Not everyone in the world is so fortunate. We've all seen examples on
the television, and at times, it brings a lump to our throats and tears
to our eyes. What happens there in third world countries when the TV
crews have gone home, and we get on with our lives? Those people we have
seen stay there, and get on with their lives too.
A small donation can make a huge difference, especially if that donation
is made direct and not soaked up by administrative costs.
==== The Kenya Project =====
In 2002 we became involved in a contact with a primary school in Kenya
through a twinning scheme set up by one of our local schools, the
primary school at Ruardean in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.
Involved in the same scheme were the Forest of Dean Rotary Club, and we
decided to donate an equal amount each - £500 - towards the scheme to
supply and build a water tank for the school in Kenya. I hope you don't
mind. It was enough money out of the sales of CDs to buy two or three
more old books for the Archive CD Books Project. (Which puts things into
perspective). We donated the £500 in December 2002, and the money went
direct to the school. All of it.
It sounds rather strange to us in affluent countries that a water supply
can be a problem to others. But the village in Kenya, where this school
is located, has just one well. One mile from the school.
Local English teachers who visited Kenya last year discovered that the
children who attend the school arrive at 8.30 in the morning, and leave
at 4.30 in the afternoon, do not have even a drink of water! Putting it
simply, they just go thirsty for the whole day!
So we decided that we should become involved.
The money (£1000 in total) went direct to the school in December 2000,
and they organised the purchase of the large water tank, plus guttering
for the school roof to collect rainwater. There is regular rain in this
part of Kenya.
By mid February 2003 the project was completed, and the school now has
an ample and regular supply of drinking water.
And..... there was money left over!
So the school asked us if we minded some of it being used on the school
building itself, bearing in mind that the small school has no doors, and
mud floors, which became hopelessly boggy every time it rained. Of
course, we agreed.
So with the remainder of the money, they put down concrete floors in the
class rooms and fitted doors!
The photographs on our special web page show the success story. One of
which we can all be proud to have been a part. That includes all of the
Archive CD Books supporters and all who have purchased some CDs from us.
It is you who have provided the money for this successful project.

============ The British-Genealogy.com Project ===============
http://www.british-genealogy.com
A NEW GENEALOGY WEB SITE *AND* BRITISH GENEALOGY MAILING LISTS
British-Genealogy.com is dedicated to assisting people with their
British family history research.
Not just to find ancestors and build a family tree, but to put meat on
the bones with information about where they lived, how they lived their
lives, information about their occupations, and what influenced their
thinking and decision making.
Real family history - not just collecting names and dates
Our aim is to give you guidance, pointers towards carrying out good
quality, sound research, and help on how to find the relevant sources of
information that will help you in your quest.
To begin with, we are giving you one of the most valuable resources
available on the internet - help from each other and from the experts.
These are the genealogy mailing lists, which are discussion forums on
various topics, and geographical areas. When you have a question then
this is the first place to ask for help.
This is totally free.
NEW mailing lists have been set up in a clear, logical, easy to use and
easy to find system, one for each county in Britain, together with some
more general top and specific topic mailing lists. They are open and
running now at http://www.british-genealogy.com
Once you subscribe to one of the British-Genealogy mailing lists, you
are provided with your own page where you can set up your own
preferences for how you receive the messages, subscribe to different
mailing lists, turn off the mail when you go on holiday, or remove
yourself from a mailing list. You are in total control, even if you
change your email address.
So.... go now, and look at http://www.british-genealogy.com
It is a great new project.... and different!
** There is no daily newsletter, junk mail, or similar from British
Genealogy.com. There isn't even a master list kept of all email
addresses.
** The British-Genealogy web site will be totally free. (No pay to view
subscriptions). I don't have any problem with pay to own, for example a
certificate, book, CD or copy of a parish register, but I do not think
that it is right to have to pay to locate an ancestor. I have always
stood by this principle, and hence my close contacts with FreeBMD,
FreeCEN and FreeREG.
** The lists are easy to locate, and there is *only* one list for a
county instead of several confusingly named ones. The new lists are in a
very uniform and logical format, with meaningful list names, and the
facility to have sub divisions of a county where necessary if there are
distinct cultural areas. But we won't be having any "pseudo" county
lists (modern counties) or regional lists that cover more than one
county. Nor will we be having any list duplication.
** The whole thing is run on a different type of mailing list software
to what people normally know. It allows each user to control how they
configure their own list subscriptions with a login to their *own*
configuration page, and it has some pretty neat features too, such as
suspend mail whilst on vacation, or simply switch between list and
digest mode.
** Archives are brilliantly searchable. A person can search them *and*
sort them by poster name, thread, or date, or subject line. They can be
made accessible to subscribers only, or to anybody, (depending on how
the list admin sets it up).
So.... go now, and look at http://www.british-genealogy.com
and join any of the British-Genealogy discussion mailing lists - to help
you with your research, and to have the opportunity to help others.
Regards
Rod Neep
