Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Well, just checked and CLAYWORTH is listed.
http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/c.html
I haven't seen any variants listed yet but will keep my eye open.
Oh yes, don't get me wrong about the resource I think what Rootsweb have
done is great but the way it was done and the way it has created more
work and hassle for present listowners of surname lists is the problem
here.
Take care
Jayne
Hi Everyone,
This is just a note to let you know that some major changes have taken
place in the structure and policies of RootsWeb, changes which I
considered sufficiently staggering to require my full attention.
For now our list will not be affected but it appears that it will be
eventually and so I will be keeping a keen eye on what is happening.
Basically, Rootsweb have decided to create new lists and GenConnect
Boards for all variants of a surname. In our case that would mean in
addition to CLAYWORTH you will see lists and boards for each of
CLEWORTH, CLAWORTH, CLIWORTH, CLOWORTH and so forth.
I will then have to "bid" for these lists and boards to make sure that
all the variant spellings remain together on ONE list and ONE board.
Additional details are in today's issue of RootsWeb Review, so
I won't bother with those here, but in short:
Due to economic problems (insufficient contributions from RootsWeb
users), from here on out, RootsWeb's Primary Revenue will be Advertising
Banners such as those at our Clayworth RootsWeb List Archives at
http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=clayworth
To maximize revenue from the Advertising Banners, RootsWeb will be
adding tens of thousands of new "Bannered" web sites. These new Bannered
web sites will consist primarily of thousands of new RootsWeb Surname
Resource Centers accompanied by matching Surname Lists and GenConnect
Boards.
While I am very glad that RootsWeb has finally discovered a way to stay
afloat financially, I am also, of course, highly disturbed about the
long range effect of these thousands of duplicate services, not only on
Rootsweb, but on all of us -- both individually and as a research group.
I will, naturally, officially request that all CLAYWORTH variant
spellings be merged into our CLAYWORTH list with applicable
Cross-Indexing, but for now it appears that instead of mergers, RootsWeb
is offering only the option of taking on the additional duplicate lists
and boards.
This does NOT mean that we are going to have to split up our research.
Instead, henceforth, I will be monitoring the new lists, GenConnect
Boards and the RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) to ensure that all
CLAYWORTH's
etc. researchers are automatically redirected to our CLAYWORTH List and
GenConnect Boards when our surname gets listed which will probably be
soon.
In the meantime, I and other RootsWeb List and Board Admins will
continue to work with RootsWeb Staff with the goal of finding viable
alternatives to this new approach.
Two of my other surname lists are already listed at this new site and so
it looks like I will have my hands full for a while. <groan>
Take care,
Your Very Exhausted Listowner
Jayne McHugh
