Hi Jayne and listmembers.
Yes, I am more interested in the village of Clayworth. I have the piece you
wrote on the village from your website. Have you any more information? Is
there an historical society for Clayworth? It seems my great-grandfather,
William Kirkby (b. 1868), his father, Frederick Kirkby (b. 1838) and
Frederick's father, Edward (b.abt 1800) were all born in Wiseton (Wyeston)
and/or Drakeshole. I know these places from a map, but can you tell me about
them? I know Drakeshole was divided by two parishes, the other being Everton.
It sounds like a swamp with ducks and might have been just that according to
your description of early Clayworth! It seems my Kirkbys give Wiseton as
birthplace on all census. I would love to know the geographical particulars.
How big is the canal? I assume it was built for irrigation and general water
supply. How far away is the nearest river? In one census they enummerated
some people living on boats. Where?
All these Kirkbys seemed to be "joiners" (as I understand it, cabinet-
makers), carpenters and farmers. When my great grandfather, William, came to
the US he became a butcher. I suppose he learned that trade on the farm in
Wiseton.
There is also a family story that one of his brothers went to Australia (or
New Zealand) to raise sheep. Was there a large amount of people emigrating
England for that purpose during the middle to late 1800's? I know I am full of
questions, but am just starting out on this line and having a great time
learning about the area my Kirkbys were from. I look forward to any replies
or recommendations to websites with this information. Thanks.
