Harry that's is kind of funny about your grandfather being John Fletcher
Clayton and my gg grandfather having the same name. Makes me wonder if
there is a connection somewhere. John, Joseph, etc., are somewhat names
that are popular, but Fletcher doesn't seem as common. Maybe there was a
Fletcher surname somewhere. Like we used Clayton as a middle name for our
son. And, I have two cousins: Charles Clayton, and Clayton Charles.

Nadine, Have you posted about this before? I remember a discussion at two different times on this list of Thalassemia and the Claytons a number of years back

I posted about this many years ago and someone on this list referred me to a
rootsweb list called Melungeon. Have been on that list for several years,
but have never found a real connection. Posted again since I have
discovered another Clayton relative who may have this. Said she has been
anemic for years. She doesn't appear to share my other lines that I thought
might be a source so making think is thru my Clayton line.
Nadine
Nadine, I have not gotten very far with my search for info on my Clayton line.
My father was Harry Fletcher Clayton and his father was John Fletcher Clayton.
They lived for the most part in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. Most of info
located the family around Elloree, SC.
I need to get started again to see if I can find more information.
If I find anything new, I will try to forward it to you.

Nadine, I find this interesting because my grandmother, Margaret Julia
Clayton Thomas ,suffered from severe anemia from childhood until her death.
She always told me her Clayton ancestors came from SW Virginia & anemia "
ran in the family "...
Her great uncle, James L. Clayton , moved to Center, Missouri after the
Civil War ( from Hancock Co IN ) ..does that name sound familiar by any
chance ?

I've not posted in quite some time, but does anyone have any Clayton
relatives with Thalassemia, a genetic anemia. I have a very mild form of this,
and while I always test anemic don't need blood transfusion.
My great great grandfather was John Fletcher Clayton. I knew I had this
traced to either my Clayton, Florance or Johnson lines, but now think it is
primarily Clayton. My grandfather Fred Florance married Aria Clayton, and
his sister Lillie married Lee Baron Clayton an uncle of Aria. Thought this
could be Johnson as Fred's mother was Johnson. Two second cousins great
granddaughters of Lilly and Lee Baron also have this. But, now have
discovered that another Clayton relative may have this. And, she does not share the
Florance line.
My Clayton lines goes back to Henry who apparently was our emigrant
ancestor who was a member of the Flying Camp during the American Revolution. The
family seems to have been in Maryland and then PA, and then Ohio and then
Missouri where my line lived during the mid to late 1800s, where John F.
died in 1910. He was both a physician and have been told he was an ordained
Methodist pastor and a circuit riding one. He was a chartering member of
the town of Wheatland, Missouri in Hickory County, MO, where he also owned a
hotel, but spent the later part of his live in Ozark, County.

Is this, perhaps, the Harry Matthews in the Social Security Death Index,

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for the info. I don't have any background on Harry. My trail has been via
Sophronia Clayton coming down from John Cottrell (1730-1806).

Hi List,
The 1930 Lakewood NJ census shows Sophronia (Clayton) and Harry Matthews with
a daughter, Helen A. Matthews. After that they sort of disappear. Sophronia and Harry
were pretty young in 1930, Sophronia born 1896 was 34 and Harry born 1901 was 29.
So they surely could have had more children wherever they ended up. They both had
jobs there in Lakewood, according to the 1930 census; Harry was a fruit market clerk and
Sophronia was a meat market book keeper. Helen at only 10 was probably in school.
Would like to exchange info with anyone connected to this branch. Would like to find out
what happened to them after 1930.
