Hi Lorraine
In the past I have posted my interest on the list but without any replies.
I have a brickwall with an Elizabeth Clayton (my grandmother). the only info
I have is from the 1891 and 1901 census where her place of birth is given as
Worcester and birth years of 1866, 1871 and from death cert. 1869. She
*eloped* with my grandfather and never married so I have no reference to her
father.
Do you have an Elizabeth from that period in your obviously well researched
family that I can probably eliminate from the Elizabeth Claytons of that
period ?

Hi Again Gordon: Have you tried Family Search? Just type in
_http://www.familysearch.org/Eng_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng) or if that dosen't work
just type family search england, in the search web. When you get into the
file put in your info on Elizabeth Clayton . I found quite a list of Elizabeths
and some of them were living in other households that could be the man she
eloped with. There was one that the 1869 could very well be 1864 as was mis
read or mis copied. - regards - Lorraine.
Dear Gordon: I have nothing that comes near to any of those dates for an
Elizabeth Clayton. Are you saying she kept her maiden name even after she eloped
or do you have any other clues to her married name? I'll post that file here
in front of me and keep checking as I continue to work on the Clayton name.
Don't give up.Let me know if you have any other info' that might give even a
small, new slant on things! regards - Lorraine.
Hi, Lorraine,
Alas, I fear I have mislead you. So unfamiliar am I with British
geography that I got my shires mixed up. My heritage is from Gloucestershire ,
not Worchestershire. And from Dumbleton and Wormington in Glouces. etc.
This is the info I found on my chart. compiled in 1893 by my grandfather before
he left for Calif. Lawrence 1700-1765 and Ann Tondman ( I have seen this
spelled several ways) were married in 1735. Their children were as follows:
Henry 1726-1763
John 1726-1728
Charles 1728-
John 1731 -
James 1732-1791
Richard 1734-1793
Benjamin 1736-1782
Francis 1739-1775
My line descends from James and my grandfather's father , James was
born in about 1830. I have connected with descendents of Richard ( a young
woman still living in Gloucestershire) and Francis, a man living in Devon. but
few of James's line that I did not know of before I started my research. If
you want to know farther about descendents of these brothers let me know.
Nancy
Hi Nancy: I'll have a look and see. Was Anne the Clayton or
Lawrence? Lawrence is not a name that is common in my Clayton line back then
, that I know of. Anne with an "e" or without, is very common in the
Clayton line. We have a lot of William, George, Thomas , Samuel, Joseph and as
with my Grandfather,"Job".
Here's how it goes: CLAYTON: William Clayton -Married Mary
Tovey(not Jovey as stated in the Jesus Christ Later Day Saints Records) , on
12th day of Nov. 1783 at Wick Chapel Worcestershire,England by banns
,witnessed by roger Badger and William Hawn. Together they
had 4 children -3 girls Sarah ,Betty and Ann and 1 boy that we know of , named
William Clayton who was christened 28th day of Sept. 1788 at Wick,
Worcestershire , and he married Elizabeth Daniel who was christened in 1774 in
Flatbury, Worcestershire. They were married on the 11th of Oct. in 1808 in
Cropthorne , Worcestershire. Together these two had Hannah,
William, George another William and Joseph. Now this Joseph was
christened the 26th day of Dec. 1819 at Broughton, Worcestershire and he married Ann
Savage who was christened c. 1827 at Drakes Broughton, Worcestershire. These
two married on the 16th of Sept. 1847 at Broughton and this was witnessed by
William Baylis and Sarah Pully.(This was verified in the 1851 and 1881
census) . Together these two had quite a family of
which Job my Grandfather was born. The other children they had were
:Joseph,Elizabeth, Mary Jane John?. Job was christened the 9th day of Mar. in 1851 at
Broughton, Worcestershire and married Elizabeth Key,who was christened in
1849 in Abberley , Worcestershire. They married Oct. 10, 1872 in St. Martins in
the Corn Market, St. Swithin's, Worcestershire . He was 22 years and she was
23.-- witnessed by Joseph Clayton and Mary Ann Key. Of this
union 10 children were born one of which was my father Thomas James
Clayton,born on May 22 1883 in Chadbury Norton , Worcestershire. I hope
this will be of some help to you Nancy and if not you some one else who is doing
their research of Claytons in Worcestershire. I know these Claytons were
farmers, animal lovers and very religious in their Christian beliefs. I have
more info' on this but have not put it all in here. I have researched the "Key"
line of my Grandmother and other maternal lines. Let me know how you make
out - regards - Lorraine, Ontario. Canada.
