Sure makes you wary doesn't it. Sometimes is safer to meet in some neutral
place. But, a shame you have to even think like that. Part of the fun of doing
genelaogy is not only finding out about our past but meeting new people.
Makes you wonder if maybe there was some reason their relatives did not have
contact with the rest of the family.
We were on vacation this summer and met a lady who more or less is the
historical society in her county. She has everything in her home and takes people
by appointment. I told her she was a trusting person.
But, we met a man at another county historical society who said he discovered
many books were gone one day. So, he got to thinking what county employee
really was into Geneaology and went to his home and asked and he had admitted he
had taken the books. Had over a hundred in his garage.
Just like meeting people for on line dating. A former coworker was telling
us that her mother went to another state to meet some guy she met on line and
was going to live with him. She was home in about a week as he was not as rich
as she had been led to believe. She was probably not as young as he believed
either.
Nadine
Just an idea to share --
1) For a scam artist, it would be easy to go on line and get all kinds
of data on a famimly, then call someone posing as a cousin... complete
with all this data to talk about that they just downloaded off the web.
In other words, it would be very easy to pose as yours or anybodys far
distant cousin so maybe we'll see more of these in the future --
2) With what happened, I asked myself what should I do if I get a call
like that and a cousin pops out of the woodwork and just happens to be
passing through town. The best thing I could think of would be to say
that "today's not a good day to come over to the house but let me grab
my stuff and I'll meet you at the Wendy's (or IHOP or Applebee's) at
the corner of..." Go meet them in a public place and share your
information. If they really appear genuine AND somebody you would
invite into your home, set the invite up for the next day. Don't get
sucked in by a "we don't mind a mess" and "we'd love to see those old
family pictures." Either take those to Wendy's in the first place or
show them off the next day.
I suppose this might work but I'd be real curious as to whether or not
there are any other ideas out there.

THIS IS FRON A WISER CLAYTON FAMILY MEMBER
Good afternoon all,
I want to share an incident that happened to my wife and I this last week.
We made contact with two cousins that live in Kentucky. We called them and
after some discussion found out they were making a trip to San Antonio, TX the
following week. We live outside Dallas and asked if they could come by and
bring pictures and info to share. They said ok and arrived last Thursday about
noon.
We had about four hours of interesting genealogy conversation. Later that
evening I discovered one of the medications I take was missing. My wife checked
and sure enough one of hers was missing as well. Both of the medications were
"controlled substances". Further checking revealed a gold ring of mine was
missing as well.
We had their cell phone, and called them. Of course they denied taking
everything. They must have taken the goods when they went to the bathroom.
We filed a complete police report but I am not optimistic about recovering
anything. This was a real bummer as you sure don't expect your own flesh and
blood to steal from you. Lesson learned....and passed on to you.
