I am English, my mother was a Clayton and I am having a lot of trouble
tracing my Clayton family. Have got back to GEORGE Clayton living in
Hepstonstall, Yorkshire in 1770s with 4 children - JOHN, b. 1775,
GEORGE b. 1776, ROBERT b. 1778 and Mally or Mary b. 1780. My line
comes down thro' GEORGE who married MARIA DEY. Does this mean anything
to anyone? Also WILLIAM CLAYTON b. 1831, died 1903, lived in
Marylebone/Lambeth/Camberwell. I have tried putting this info on this
site several times without any luck, so here goes again..... Is there
anyone out there who can help me PLEASE.

My English Claytons go back to 1700 from Glouchester and Wormington to a
Lawrence and Ann. Subsequent male heirs were often named James, Richard, henry,
Benjamin;, also include Hollis , Ernest, Oliver and Bruce. Female names are
Anne, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Margaret. etc.I have a chart my grandfather
made in 1893 before coming to US, that lists 200 Claytons, Male Descendents,
their wives and children including daughters. Nancy in Calif

I know barely anything about Clarence... my father was named after him..
Louis Clarence Clayton. My dad passed away when I was 11 yrs old and my mom
passed at a very young age as wel therefore I know so little about my heridty I

My cousins name is James Turner. He grew up in Baldwin City, Kansas. His
Mom was Vera Florance Turner. Now, I have a question for you. Do you know of
any of your relatives have a history of being anemic or of having Thalassemia
also known as Cooleys anemia? Why I ask is that I have a very mild form of it.
Meaning that I probably am more a carrier of it than it causing me problems.
I think I have this traced to my Florance/Clayton line. I know of two
Clayton cousins who also have or had it. They are elderly and one may be deceased
by now. Their mother was Lilly Florance - sister of my grandfather. And, their
father was Lee Baron Clayton, an uncle of my grandmother Aria Clayton.

I have very little history on my family and am trying to obtain some. I know
there were a few Louis, Lewis and Clarences in my Clayton heritage... anyone
with any info please let me know. thanks so much
lynnd
The info is very interesting. May I ask the name of your cousin? I also have
a very distant one who went to Australia and am wondering if it could be the
same person and if so, you & I might have common CLAYTON's. Mine is Bruce
Cogan.

Here is some information I just received from my first cousin. He used to
live here, but has now immigrated to Australia, where his wife is from. Thought
the information regarding Washington and Revolutionary War was interesting.
Nadine
Thanks for the Clayton info. I have much of it in my genealogy books. In
fact, I have a copy of a letter dated 1937 that says Henry Clayton was captured
(by the Hessians), not killed, during the Battle of Long Island and was later
exchanged, dying in 1808 in Washington County, MD. Also, Henry Clayton did
not merely entertain General Washington, but in fact helped him plan battles.
General Washington had his own mug in their home and a small chalkboard on
which he and Clayton would sketch plans. A portrait of Ann Clayton (maiden name,
Speer or Spear) was displayed at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
I remember Mom telling me that when Charlie Clayton was shot and killed, the
Clayton brothers took Aria when Molly married Mr. Knott, telling her that Aria
would be reared as a Clayton. I don't have any record of her being actually
adopted, though, nor did Mom ever say this was the case. But who knows? I do
know the Clayton's were fiercely loyal to family. Uncle Lee Clayton was the
one who could jump over a flatbed wagon, but an accident doing that one time
injured him severely. I have an old original tin photo of the Clayton brothers.
Would love to see scan of the Clayton brothers if at all possible.

Thanks for the Clayton info. I have much of it in my genealogy books. In

(by the Hessians), not killed, during the Battle of Long Island and was later

General Washington had his own mug in their home and a small chalkboard on
which he and Clayton would sketch plans. A portrait of Ann Clayton (maiden name,

I remember Mom telling me that when Charlie Clayton was shot and killed, the

would be reared as a Clayton. I don't have any record of her being actually
